Business education began at Mar- quette in 1910 when the College of Economics including schools of Busi- ness and Iournalism was formed. The following year the Rev. George A. Deglman, S.I., arrived at Marquette and it was largely through his in- fluence that the schools were sepa- rated in 1917. In that year the busi- ness courses were more closely inte- grated and departments of commerce, accounting, and finance were formed. The school was renamed six years later as the College of Business Ad- ministration. The college gained much prestige in 1928 when it became the first Catholic member of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business. The present Business Administra- tion building was completed in 1951. The design of the building, the first of its kind on campus, was simple and functional. Last September the Business Ad- ministration curriculum underwent a series of extensive changes. Greater stress was put on languages, labora- tory sciences and mathematics. The new curriculum is designed to give the Business Administration students, now numbering over 1,ooo, a wider and more liberal background.

When Marquette moved from the State Street campus to Wisconsin Avenue three years later, however, the Graduate pro- gram was discontinued for a number of years. Undergraduate expansion was the foremost consideration during these years. Not until 1922, when the Rev. Albert C. Fox S.I., became president of the Univer- sity, was the Graduate School revived. Fa- ther Fox felt that a Graduate School was es- sential to any University and with this in mind he introduced modern research type graduate work in twelve fields. The Graduate School was authorized to confer doctorates in 1931 when Marquette ' d was given a special rating on the approve list of the Associatio ties. Doctorates are offered in eight fields and for the first time n of American Universi- are being offered in biology this year. Masters degrees are offered in zz areas of study.
