My dear graduates: Within a few days you will leave Marquette. One of the marks of a university is that it is a community of scholars, and we trust that in your years here you have felt yourself to be truly a member of the Marquette family bound together by a mutual devotion and dedication to truth. As a comparative newcomer to this family, I have been impressed with the warmth of my reception and my friendly acceptance to this academic community. Ironically, one of my first opportunities to speak to you turns out to be almost a farewell message. But I want you to know that your presence here at Marquette has had a continuously rejuvenating, refreshing effect on the faculty and administration. The seriousness, generosity and vitality which you have brought have made you distinctive to some of the oldest and wisest pro- fessors in the University. We are grateful for your personal contribution to the Marquette tra- dition. As you leave, I trust you will take with you three qualities highly valued in this tradition, three qualities that distinguish the Christianly educated man and woman-confidence, compe- tence and compassion. Leave out any one and the character of the Christian man or woman is grievously deformed. I have said you are leaving Marquette, but I have also said you have been a member of the Marquette family. And a true family, no matter how widely scattered its members may be, re- mains a family. We are proud of you and, though we wish you Godspeed on your pilgrimage through time, please know that you are still, and shall always be, members of our family. Please, know, too, that in the years ahead we shall look forward to your return and we shall be eager to learn of your experiences and your exploits, and the extent to which your present dreams have become realities. Dedication We, today's college students, are given opportunities greater than those ever offered for the fulfillment of our vocations. Not only are we receiving the knowledge in the humanities based on a found- ation of theology and philosophy and the technical skill necessary for our future, but we are also given the opportunity for personal development. We are given these opportunities as part of our educa- tion in a esuit university. Thd Very Rev. John J. Foley, S.J., head of the Wisconsin pro- vince of the Society of Jesus, must supervise this education in the six states included in the Wisconsin province. Father Foley says that our education is helping us meet the challenge of a changing society because it prepares us to evaluate the usefulness of our future work, pointing out that we must relate our activities to the Supreme Be- ing, working toward and for Him. The Jesuits' work in America began with missionary activity. Later they extended their work to cover education and today it is one of their main concerns. The Wisconsin province, which covers Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Wiscon- sin, is part of this massive work. The link between the province and the headquarters of the Society in Rome is Father Foley, who was appointed provincial July 31, 1961, by the general superior, the Very Rev. John B. Janssens, S.J. . i Included under the prov1nc1al's supervision are two universities, Creighton in Omaha, Nebraska, and Marquettep three boys' high schools, two retreat houses, five parishes and two missions. The pro- vince is also responsible for the new Jesuit University in Seoul, Korea, and has been assigned to establish a seminary in Korea to train diocesan priests. The Wisconsin province also recently opened its own novitiate and house of study at St. Bonifacius, Minnesota. Father Foley was born in Rantoul, Illinois, in 1901 and entered the Jesuit order at St. Stanislaus Seminary, Florissant, Missouri, in 1924. He was ordained in 1936. The provincial was educated at Creighton and St. Louis Universities and taught at Xavier University High School in Cincinnati and at Creighton Prep in Omaha, From 1938 to 1951, Father Foley was principal of Marquette University High School in Milwaukee. At that time, he also served on an evaluation committee for the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. In 1951, he was transferred to Creighton University. There, he was assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts for one year, and then served as regent of the School of Medicine and Pharmacy for six years. Father Foley was president of Creighton Prep from 1958 till his appointment as provincial. As head of the fifth. largest province in the United States, Father Foley hasthe responsibility of training Jesuits, of pastoral supervi- sion of missions and parishes, and of educational supervision of the province's schools. As students at Marquette University, we ac- knowledge his great responsibility as provincial in the role of edu- cation-the responsibility of the training of young minds to face the future and challenges of this changing world. It is with this in mind that we dedicate the 1962 Hilltop to the Very Rev. John J. Foley.
