MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT To the Graduates of 1960: As you reach the successful climax of your college careers, I extend to each graduate my personal and hearty congratulations. You have completed a strenuous period of study and growth and can be justly proud of your success and achievement. The crisis of our times places a serious obligation upon each of you to continue your growth in truth and virtue beyond your college days through all the years of your life. I hope that you will continue to nourish that thirst for knowledge and goodness which Marquette University sought to instill in you. The coming decades will also be years of opportunity for all of you. There Is great need in our world today for young men and women willing to use their talents and special knowledges for the service of their fellow men, striving to insure peace and justice for all mankind. I am confident that many of you will find your places in the front ranks of those so dedicated— reflecting credit upon the University which has sought to serve you. President

Rather, our personality gyroscope spins and grows within the framework of the University, using to best advantage the opportunities afforded by the administration, faculty and myriads of University services The proper growth and polish of our personality needs the benefit of counseling from teachers, the wisdom of the Library and the lightness of the Union. Without these, our gyroscope will falter and tip. searching for something secure to regain momentum, wj The University—with its strong academic program and a faculty dedicated to education rather than personal glory—has long been a basis for development. This year's expansion of departments, integration of courses for several schools and the new science building echoed the commitment to excellence and further strengthened the basis for our growth. Marquette's Catholic heritage affords another opportunity that is not available to all college students. We realize that religion is essential to our development. We have access to Masses at Gesu. the services of the Jesuit community and the religious atmosphere of the entire University. Just as the spirit of Catholicism permeates all things while we are here, so should it be our guide after we leave the campus. Wc cannot achieve our well-balanced personality without the benefit of religion to furnish the norms by which wc grow.
