Slowly the throng began to break up into groups, and within each group the members began to stand out as individuals. A shapeless mass began to take form as part of the student body. Now people were not merely nameless faces-they were acquaintances and friends. The new students began to have things in common with each other, while at the same time they began to reassert their individual clif- ferences. This continued long after Welcome Week. But Welcome Week was designed to introduce new students to the Whole of university life. Along with the academic life, the social was fully represented. Un- ion mixers, dorm coffee hours and school parties typilied the activities to come dur- ing the school year. A variety show intro- duced freshmen to student talent and Marquette sports. V ' iggavyvs ii I While the familiar ritual of the Mass remained unchanged, the Mass of the Holy Ghost took on special significance, as an offering of the Mar- quette community. Students gathered in Gesu September 25 to invoke the aid of the Holy Ghost in this year's studies. Although their petitions varied, Fr. Charles I. Mehok, SJ., suggested an additional, common purpose for their prayers in his sermon. Maintaining that the influence of the Catholic graduate on society is insufficient today, Fr. Mehok reminded students that if they are to live up to their commitnient to knowledge, they must become a sacrificing and courageous community dedicated completely to God. Marquette students could become such a community throuffh the Holy Ghost, he said. The Mass of the Holy Ghost, in his view, pre- sented an opportunity to pray for both success and courage: success in academic subjects, courage to practice Marquette ideals after gradu- ation. D
