Father Mac's sacramental statistics are proof of the heed paid his advice. He now hears about 300 confessions and distributes over 1,000 Com- munions per week. He averages 50 baptisms an- nually, most of whom are converts, he said. He also marries a number of his students. As lord of the tossed salads, Communion breakfast caterer and Marquetteis man in the cheeseburger department, Father Mac demon- strates his cooking ability. His cafeteria, maimed by student help, satisfies the appetites of hungry medical and dental students. It also serves as a dining room for various groups throughout the year. Father Mac's office frequently attracts youth- ful patients from the dental clinic. Come on in heref, said Father Mac to a pre-school lad sport- ing a band-aid under his chin. What happened to you? I slipped in the bathtubf the boy replied. Well, We'1l fix that,', said Father, escorting him across the hall to the dental school snack bar. I bet you didn't know I've got a cow that gives ice creamf' he said, handing the boy a vanilla malt cone. Another extension of Father McEvoy,s serv- ices is his role as chaplain, counselor and full- time resident at Monitor Hall. I think you have to make the priesthood your hobbyf, said Father Mac, referring to those priestly activities that have become both his hobby and his Way of life. This Jesuit jack-of-all-trades, the priest Wan- dering through the biochemistry labs, jogging along Wisconsin Avenue, giving absolution at the foot of his bed or preaching to retreatants, is a man of dedication. To Father William H. Mc- Evoy, the priest dedicated to the souls at Mar- quette, We dedicate the 1964 Hilltop.

Y LJH- But Father Mac also enjoys working with college- age people because, being in the crucial period of their lives, they need help. I have the finest job you could ask for right now, he said. The Marquette student has gone through many phases during Father Mac's 16 years here: he de- scribed the mature ex-G.I.'s that crowded in after World War IIg next came the younger students who were affected by the war. Today's group is a little more intellectual and a little less practical than mostf' he said. Many of to- day,s students, farther removed from both the Korean Wal' and World War II, are not sure what they want or what college means. They are less tolerant, in general, of those who are not as intelligent as they. He noted the presence of an almost pseudo-intel- lectual atmosphere. I would say Marquetteis standards are high on the spiritual levelf, Religious trends of the last decade, he said, show the division between those who are fervent in their faith and those who are not. The cause for many of today's Catholics, dropping their religion seems to be a form of intellectualism in which they ac- cept nhalf-bakedl' liberalism without seeking the full truth. He said that they adopt just enough liberalism to raise doubts and then refuse to follow the thought out, almost as if they were afraid of what answers they might find. He added, My plea to the students has always been, 'Keep going to the sacraments and everything will work out.' n
