During a senior's 4 years at Marquette, he becomes increas- ingly aware of her professional competence and friendly interest. Anyone who has prepared a class report can testify to her help- fulness, and those who have debated or worked on the publica- tions owe her a special debt of gratitude. Thanks to her training, the senior leaves Marquette with a firm grasp of the principles of reference work. As an expression of appreciation we dedicate the i958 Flam- beau to her. 5 Administration K I s x Very Reverend Richard T. Jones, S.J. President Mr. J. J. Schmitz MY- Z- W- D37 6 Asst. As building superintendent he directly contributed to the comfort and well being of students and faculty alike. May he rest in peace. Cafeteria Workers Maintenance Men Mrs. Litzau and Mrs. E. Sf: SK fa .Q Fourth Place Climaxes Up and Down Season The varsity football team finished the season with a record of three wins, two losses, and two ties, to finish fourth in the Conference. With a little help from Lady Luck, however, the team could have finished at the top of the standings. The defense especially was outstanding, and, as a result, only one team in the confer- ence scored more than six points against it. The season opened with a non-conference skirmish against DeLaSalle of Chi- cago. Conforti and Dermody both scored touchdowns, Conforti's coming on a 55- yard run. Failure to convert extra points proved the Hilltop downfall and DeLaSalle walked off with a l4-l2 victory. The first Catholic Conference game for the Hilltop was against Pius. Pius scored once and then held on desperately to win, 6-O. Marquette never really got started in this game. The first victory of the season came over an outclassed Notre Dame eleven. Five touchdowns were scored by the Hilltoppers, with Dermody, Conforti, Collopy, and Englehardt all finding paydirt. Tough Bosco was next, and for once a lineman received all the glory. lt was Phil Bach who made Marquette's.touchdown. He intercepted a misguided aerial and rambled 34 yards into the end zone. Bosco scored in the third quarter, and the game ended with the score tied 6-6. The Hilltoppers got back on victory road with a 28-O victory over Cathedral. This time Terry Keenan was the big show, as he personally scored two touchdowns. Dermody and Graf also scored to lead the Marquette offensive. Messmer proved to be a stumbling block for the resurgent Marquetters. They scored one touchdown and then protected it with a fine defensive effort. Near the end of the game, however, Graf plunged over for a touchdown. The final score was 6-6. Memorial followed and proved to be only fodder for the Marquette machine. Conforti scored twice, and Dick Schaefer, not usually noted for his speed, scored once by sprinting 32 yards with a Memorial fumble. Dermody and Ryan also scored to make the final 32-O. The final game, homecoming, was against rugged St. Kate's. They scored three times to thwart any Hilltop hopes of an upset. Young, after passing tremen- dously, scored the lone Marquette touchdown on a short sneak. The final was 21-6. At the end of the season several of the players received honors. Six squad members were placed on all-conference teams. Dick Schaefer, besides being all- conference, received team awards for sportsmanship and for being most valuable. 81 Football Sophomore Squad UTM Front Row: Stiglich, Caravella, W. Fallon, Dunn. At the. left is pictured the statue of Mary which was set up in the ballroom. The theme of this year's N. ball was Magic Moments. This is how the crowd looked from the floor. The cold weather didn't seem to stop anyone for the attendance was very good. A small sample of the number of people is shown here. Part of the crowd is pictured here as seen from the balcony. 149 Mixers r I u JE Who Wears Short Shorts? That is the question this surprised young man is asking at the Frosh-Soph Mixer. A Soph and a friend pause briefly for a breath or two before returning to the gaiety of the mixer. l a l ., .. Fun was had'by all who attended the Sodality-sp sored mixer for frosh and soph. These ten seniors were chosen by a faculty committee for their loyalty, enthusiasm, and self-sacrifice displayed in re- ligious, academic, social, and athletic activities. They have given of their time and talents to improve both themselves and their school. Their backing of all school events has helped to maintain and build the Marquette spirit. These seniors have already assumed the position of Christian leaders, a position in which they will be increasingly important in the years ahead. They leave Marquette this year, but they carry with them into the future the characteristic spirit of a Marquette man. phil Bach Tom Bruett Mike Ash Dick Conforti an 3' mi ' , W ,sig-.A . :15T'i3' Ag .f .r 3 .f im g., Y 1 ,G-. 3 X 1x 44' fa S ,Z .. . .
