In these hundred years, Wisconsin has developed from a comparative wilderness into one of the foremost states of the Union. She has seen thriving commercial and industrial cities grow up around the pioneer settlements of that day. Her mighty forests have been cleared to make room for the prosperous farms of America's Dairylandf' To our glorious state, this year celebrating one hundred years of progress, we dedicate this yearbook. Secondly, we hope that this yearbook may be a token of appreciation and gratitude to Mr. John Fountain, who has served Marquette High School so devotedly during the past quarter of a century. 1948 REV. JOHN J. FOLEY, s. J. PRINCIPAL REV. JEROME T. BOYLE, s.J. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL To the Seniors of '48 , . . Congratulations to you, the largest graduating class in the history of Marquette High. May the fine spirit that has characterized your four years remain with you, and grow ever stronger, honoring by your good lives those who have done so much for you, your parents, your teachers, and above all Jesus and Mary. God bless and keep you. jaiw flaky, S. Seaton 'QHE S of urea 2 1 X lx :Ha l -M M F! 'ft25. ifi R. ,ns JSE M A Viiii h ff ti 3. 35 N0 G A r 1,1 I . ,Sig ' f5 f,'j . Ying.-WA V, -.. At the same time it is painstaking and demanding work, and sacrifices must be made so that deadlines may be met. Countless details enter into the workg pages must be planned and re-planned, pictures must be taken and prepared for the engravers, copy must be written, cuts must be arranged, and always-w money must be raised. The Prep Players were host, November 28-30, to a new dramatic feature of the archdiocese, a yearly Play liestival. This festival is intended t0 promote Catholic Action by giving a group repre- sentation of the accomplishments of Catholic High School dramatists. liight schools were represnted, each presenting a one-act play. Marquette staged The Rising of the Moon, which the Players repeated at the Band concert several weeks later. This play took first place in the awards. Its stars, George I-lalaska and Williain Connell also received individual acclaim as the outstanding male actors. A larger audience than ever before in the his- tory of the Prep Players saw the spring production, The Magnificent Yankee. The play, with its subtle humor, was appreciated to the fullest by the adults who comprised the major part of the audi- ence. By far the greatest acting chores were carried by George Halasl-za as Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Miss Barbara Plant as his wife Fanny. Miss Plant, a graduate of Marquette University, turned in a performance that did much to enhance the production. Halaska made his final appear- George Halaska as justice Holmes ance, in a very ditficult role, the best of his career. The numerous small parts were capably handled. Responsibility for this year's success goes in large part to the director of the Prep Players, Mr. L. Schlenk, and the spiritual director, Pr. Luebke. Truly, this was a banner year for one of the school's most spirited and hardworking organi- zations. Fourth Row: Hornak, Brock, Schneider, McClain, Moore. At Marquette, while Jesuit teachers predominate, the lay teachers form a very valuable and faithful group whose influence for good cannot be measured. This year, in dedicating the annual to Mr. john Foun- tain, we have wished to pay a tribute to Marquettes non-Jesuit teachers. For twenty-five years, Mr. Fountain has been teaching the stu- dents of Marquette. For those twenty-five years he has been not only an instructor, he has been a model of Catholic manliness for thousands of young Catholic men who knew him. He has grown to be a familiar figure teaching mathematics, directing the singing in chapel, managing the annual grade school tournament. ln his case this familiarity has not bred contempt as it is traditionally said to dog rather, it has only served to increase the respect and ad- miration which is felt by his students and fellow teachers. And so we look back upon their activities of the year just completed as an indication of what we can expect from them in days to come. Football was probably the first active sign of junior spirit. Capably managing positions on the varsity squad were Bob Frantz, Mike McGuire, Bill Bittman, and Ted Nord. Acutely aware of the consistent per- formances turned in by this group, we can only look forward hopefully to see them as the backbone of a championship team. Juniors were also instrumental in making this year a very successful one for the Websters. Czarnecki, R. Ferry A. Kowalski, G. Gadzikowski, H, Cowdin, P. Brigden, J. Felske Class 3 A Brigden made commendable showings at speech meets throughout the season of N.F.L. and Wisconsin Speech League competition. The Flambeau Monthly boasts a topnotch staff, composed of an energetic crew of juniors led by Robert Hart, editor-in-chief. They should be able to put out an excellent yearbook next year, if they keep up their quality of journalistic work. In basketball it is hardly necessary to mention the stellar play of juniors Chuck Lofy, Ted Nord, and Dick Lucas on the varsity, and of Ed Czarnecki and other up-and-coming members of the BH team. Besides the activities already mentioned, the juniors hold a pre- dominant majority in the band. The other organizations throughout the school, from the Sodality of Our Lady to the track team, have not found junior enthusiasm lacking. Next year's seniors can be expected to follow the praiseworthy pattern they have set as juniors. sm CENT, I czrsanm 'of 1 WUNDERFUL 'FP wisconsin 0 fra Jill' ol' Q59 41 e H- be il T. McCotter, 1. The Preps began the season with a 6-2 victory over a rough West Allis eleven at the Bulldogs home field. Following this victory the junior Hilltoppers smashed St. john's Cathedral to the turf by a rousing 39-0 count. Lady Luck frowned on M.H. and a blocked punt resulted in a 14-13 defeat at the hands of Messmer. Still broken in spirit by this heartbreaking defeat, the Preps played slovenly against St. Francis and lost their second and last game by the score of 20-7. Regaining their early season form the Preps edged St. Catherine's by the score 9-6. The score hardly in- , dicated the contest, as the Preps outfought, outcharged l and outplayed their opponents. Following this victory ? the Blue and Gold tore the Pius defense apart in winning 26-7. Gaining momentum, the Preps smashed Notre Dame by a 20-6 tally. And on the following Sunday the Marquette High eleven wound up its 1948 Con- ference Season by dealing Don Bosco a terrihc beating in football fundamentals. Displaying college blocking and passing and professional running the Preps ran wild to rack up a 40-0 victory. This year, under the tutelage of Coach jerry Connelly, the foundation of future elevens was molded into championship form. Taking a group of green but eager candidates, Coach Connelly did an expert job of transforming this ragged band into a smooth machine within the short space of ? three months. This year's team was noted for its sharp precision in football fundamentals. It was through these funda- mentals that the frosh compiled their enviable record u on the ridiron this year. An exam le of the team's bljocking vgas in evidence when Bob Bfiirns traveled 90 COHFGFCHCC yards in the St. johnls game without an opposing hand being laid upon him-an example of a perfect play perfectly executed by the employment of simple funda- mentals. Standouts among an outstanding squad were Duane Brandstatter, hard-charging fullback, Ray Pfarr, rugged end, and Tony Winkler, speedy tailback. Brandstatter cracked numerous lines apart with his terrific charge and while not employed in the latter pursuit was heav- ing long touchdown passes to Pfarr. The Whitefish Bay game was highlighted by two seventy yard touch- down runs by Winkler. All in all, a bright football future lies in store for Marquette. This was the very thing which marked the 1947-1942- B team basketball squad. Under the direction ol Coach john McGee, the junior Hilltoppers wen' through a gruelling twenty-two game schedulc with the small total of four defeats. This in itself would be an outstanding achievement, but what is more to be marvellec at is the fact that the Preps beat the four team: which had previously upset them. They lost to Notre Dame 30-29, St. Bona venture's 20-18, Messmer 25-19, and St. Cath erine's 29-23. They then trounced the sam' teams by thees score: 36-23, 37-23, 43-29, 45 36. Sweeping through the entire Conference schedule without a defeat, the lirosh went on to register im- pressive victories over powerful C.Y.O. teams of Milwaukee, registered a grand total of I7 victories in I9 clashes, Their first defeat was administered by the Gesu C.Y.O. quintet, who later in the season won the C.Y.O. crown. Spurred on by this defeat the Preps trimmed Gesu in a return engagement. Highpoint of the season was the terrific beating dealt the St. johns Military Academy Freshman Team. The lirosh hit the hoop for 68 points while holding St. johns to an anemic 18. ln view of this slaughter, it was determined that the Marquette lfrosh would meet St. john's Military Academy's B Team in a return engagement. It was in this game that the Preps lost their second tilt by a 31-Z6 count. A remarkable record and a credit to the school. fBottom rowj Kr-onsnohle, Nfurpliy, XX hite, Zwadzich. Reed, Regenfelder. Although undertaking a difficult schedule this year in the face of the difhculty of un- predictable weather, Marquette High's track team nevertheless boasts of a successful season. Under the energetic direction of Coach Die- ringer, the squad added new laurels to the outstanding track record compiled during the past few years. High-light of the past season's dual meets was the junior Hilltoppers smashing victory over the West Milwaukee thinlies. Slamming the high jump, broad jump, hundred yard dash, quarter-mile and half-mile, and scoring first place in twelve out of thirteen events, Mar- quette won by the top-heavy score of 88-20. Outstanding for the Marquetters this year were Boemer in the hurdles, Burke in the half- mile, and Frederick in the mile.
