I I THREE HUNDRED YEARS AGO eight Jesuit Missionaries merited the crown of martyrdom at the hands of the North American Indians. Their zealous devotion to the cause of Christ inspired them to bring the good news of the Gospel to the New World and to undergo the most cruel tortures and death for the name of Christ. To these men who planted the seeds of Christianity in our land, whose drops of blood watered these seeds and made them grow, we owe in large measure our Christian heritage. To these North American Martyrs and Saints we dedicate this 1947 Flambeau in gratitude to them for their unceasing labors in the cause of Christ. May their courage, perseverance, and trust in God become our virtues so that we too may contribute our share in the spreading of the Faith for which these Martyrs died.
