Their zealous devotion to the cause of Christ inspired them to bring the good news of the Gospel to the New World and to undergo the most cruel tortures and death for the name of Christ. To these men who planted the seeds of Christianity in our land, whose drops of blood watered these seeds and made them grow, we owe in large measure our Christian heritage. To these North American Martyrs and Saints we dedicate this 1947 Flambeau in gratitude to them for their unceasing labors in the cause of Christ. May their courage, perseverance, and trust in God become our virtues so that we too may contribute our share in the spreading of the Faith for which these Martyrs died. FATHER JOHN 1. FOLEY, SJ. Principal TO THE SENIORS: Congratulations, and may your future be fruitful in manly effort to follow God's plans for you. May your efforts bring genuine successes, peace and contentment of heart, and gener- osity like that of Jesus and Mary and Joseph. God bless you. you y. c52..1e,, Cay. FATHER JEROME T. BOYLE MR. Z. Each senior tried in his own way to improve the grandeur of his school. Some did more than others, but each did his bit with the same spirit . . . charity for others. If each man learned only to live in harmony with his fellow man, his stay at Marquette was not in vain, no matter what material knowledge he obtained .... On the following pages the seniors are presented to you for the last look at them .... They are the type of men who make l that it is. time .... VAR ITY HIGHLIGHT The Marquette football team, under the able guidance of Mr. McGee and Mr. Callen, began the long hard climb back to the championship form it displayed for five years before it was top- pled from its dynasty in 1945. BA KETBALL It was Marquette and Messmer again in the familiar role of being 1-2 in the Catholic Conference race during the 46-47 haslcethall season. This time, however, it was Messmer who Hn- ished first, Marquette ended in undisputed second place. The :season opener was lost to a big Rufus King squad 43-24, but then the jr. Hilltoppers found the hoops and moved through the first half of the conference schedule undefeated up to the game with Messmer which they lost in a fast hard-fought con- test, 38-29. ln the second round the Prepsters again lost to Rufus King, this time by the score of 41-39. The close score indicated the progress the team had made since the opener. Then came victories over St. Ignatius, St. Francis, Notre Dame, St. Bonaventure, and St. Catherine. Pius Xl pulled an upset in defeating the Hilltop- pers -ll-35 and ruined their chances for a championship. After defeating St. Benedict 43-40, Marquette lost again to Messmer 44-36. jerry House represented MH on the All Conference Coaches' and Players' teams. Its pages contained the first accurate his- tory of vast sections of our country. THE TODAY IESUIT MISSIONS continues this tra- dition of vivid, colorful reporting. It is the ollicial magazine of the American Iesuit missionaries who are pushing back the frontiers of CHRIST'S KING- DOM in India, Baghdad, the Philip- pines, Alaska, British Honduras, ja- maica, China, the Pacific Islands, and other parts of the world.
