We know that the prohlems which are now con- fronting us seemed remote and imaginary when we were freshmen. Already many of our fellow seniors have entered the armed forces of our country, and they are facing situations morally and spiritually difficult. Because o f their firm Cath- olic principles, they are meet- ing these situations and are overcoming them. Thus, as others of us enter the services, the spirit of those gone hefore us will serve as a guiding influence. Armetl, not only with guns anal ammunition, hut with faith ancl trust in Gocl, our Alumni have gone ancl are going forth to meet the l urlz- ing a'angers of war. They have clotheal themselves in khaki ancl navy blue, ana' they are triumphantly hear- ing their country's hanner. Some of them have given their lives, while others, will- ing, if neeal he, to give up their lives, are continuing with determination their comhat against the aggressor. I t is to These, Our H onoreil Deacl ana' Faithful Living, that We, the Grailuates of Nineteen Hunclreil ana' Forty- Four, ilealicate this Flamheau Annual with clue respect ana' reverence. l SGT. Greek and Latin Club The Greek and Latin Club was established by Mr. Cronin, SJ., for a better appreciation of the ancient classics. The idea of the club is to get away from the average students perspective of Greek and Latinfmerely as something that must be studied but cannot be enjoyed. Mr, Cro- nin reports tine success along these lines, and is to be com- mended for his worthy efforts. BACK Row: Heiser, Dudenhoefer. FRONT Row: Daly, Hurley, john Lynch, Mr. T. J. Webster Club Outstanding event of the year for the Webster Club was the tournament at which its debaters were declared State Catholic Champions for the third consecutive year. Participating were the three year Champs, Richard Buellesbach and Thomas Prier, and the junior debaters David Daly and Charles Reiter. The Webster Club journeyed throughout Wis- consin and parts of Illinois this year, seeking competition in all types of public speaking. There were the speech tourneys at Carroll College, the debate tournament at Loyola College, in which Prier and Buellesbach came through undefeated, and numerous other tournaments throughout the city and State, in all of which, the Websters were successful, and secured special honor and recog- nition for Marquette High One of the major projects undertaken by the Wfebster Club this year was the League of Nations Assembly. This assembly gained praise and rec- ognition in newspapers and magazines through- out the country. Much of the success was due to the tireless efforts and direction of the moderator, Mr. V. F. The group takes over the responsi- bility of boosting all organizations among the underclassmen. Any organization needing help may turn to the Minute Men with the greatest of confidence. Marquette owes a debt of gratitude to this truly active group for all the fine work it has done this year, and we hope that it continues so successfully in the coming years. The members of this organization are pictured above. Junior Webster Club Promise for the continued success of debating and public speaking was brought this year by the outstanding performance of the Freshmen debaters. Highlight of the seasons activities was the debate tournament sponsored by the junior Webster Club at Marquette High School. Some of the best freshmen competition in the State participated. The most outstanding success of the season was accomplished in the tournament at Loyola High School in Chicago when the junior Websters took first place in the Freshmen division. Booster Club The Booster Club can easily claim the title of the busiest organization in the school. Other activities may have certain seasons in which they are particularly busy, but the Boosters are active all the year around. The reason for this is simple: the Booster Club is designed to des velop leadership, school spirit, and all the , activities of the school. Some of its other -'sf-Milli? -' functions are the Orientation of lfreshmeng ushering at football and basketball gamesg planning parades, pep meetings, picnics, and dances, and assisting with the grade school Donald Cirtiff. J tournament. lt is easy to see, then, why this , . l iesident club is busy from the first day of school to the Mr. J, F. Hanley. SJ, Moderator List' This organization is composed of the lead- ing students of the senior class. They are chosen each year for their abilities of leader' ship, their industry, and their school interest. The group is supposed to be .1 ci'oss-sec- tion of the leaders of all the various activities in the school, and for this year the class ot' YH can well be proud of and grateful to the Boosters and their moderator Mr. Hanley, Sxl., for the tine work they have done in furthering the interests of all the activities in the school. ti.-tCK ROW: gl. Aladdins Club For those upperclassmen sincerely interested in the development of their speech technique, the meeting of the Aladdins is the place to learn. Under the careful guidance of Father Corcoran, SJ., The Aladdins Club can offer students excellent opportunities to practice public speaking. And it is no coincidence that all the best speakers at Marquette High are or have been members of the Aladdins. Writers Club Anyone who has gone through Marquette High will tell you that it is very necessary to be able to write well. Fr. Corcoran, realizing this need, organized the club for writers and named it after the famous American author, Joyce Kilmer. 'The members write their papers, read them at the next meeting, subject them to the general criticism, and turn them over to the moderator, Fr. Corcoran, for a final check. ln this way the members' styles are improved, while at the same time they pick up many of the tine points of writing technique IKQM I C Admit!! Every ac- tive group in the school wants its feats publicized and its coming events announced. And it is generally agreed that the most effective way to do this is to have a few signs painted. So the Cartoonists are kept very busy in their little cell in the basement. The members of the organ- ization are: Back row: Lubhers, jermain, Tans, D. Kelly. Brunkow. Front row: Mr. F. The Marquette Varsity Football Champions---l943 Coach Duncan on his arrival at Marquette real- ized the Hilltop teams had a record of three confer- ence championships in succession. He also realized that he was expected to bring the team through to another victory-'to another championship. Early in the season, Len Woelilke and joe Russo, two veterans and important cogs in the Hilltop foot- ball machine, left school. Marquette was fortunate to have such men as Wallie Schmidt, who was later named All-Catholic center, Bud Moynihan, and Denny Curran to fill in for them. But although Coach Duncan had a large squad, it was not as easy to find replacements when Terry Brennan, 'lack Dou- cette, Tom Reed, Harry Campion, and Bill Enright were injured at various times during the season. The seasons success was due to cooperation be- tween coach and team, a strong determination to win in every one of the players, and the presence in the Marquette lineup of the greatest back in Hilltop Prep historyfjim Brennan. Varsity Basketball Champs---l944 Marquette basketball teams of the last few years have brought a great deal of glory to our school, and the 1945-19411 squad is no excep- tion. Faced with the loss of five regulars from last year's championship club, Coach Duncan had an extremely difficult task on his hands in mould- ing together another winning unit. He did not have to lool: far for a wealth of talent. Gene Berce, Art Heldr, and joe Faupl presented an excellent front line combination, the first two being dead shots, and joe having the height necessary to bring down plenty of re- bounds. lack Doucette and Dave Foley, two steady, rangy guards, rounded out Coach Duncan's start- ing unit. Backing up the first quintet were Chucl-1 Hushek, lack Wzlgoner, Bill Ryan, and Bill Lofy. The Preps met North, their first opponent, with- out the services of football players Doucette, Foley, Wiigoner, and Ryan, and accordingly lost in a close game. These men were added to the lineup in the following tilts, and the Hilltop team began to function smoothly. Lincoln, Rufus King, Pius XI, and St. Benedict all went down to decisive defeat before the Blue and Gold. It soon became obvious that Marquette's strong- est opposition was to come from Cathedral and Messmers rampaging Bishops. The Preps showed no mercy to the Eagles, giving them a stinging -17-23 setbackfthe stage was now set for the first Messmer-Marquette tussle. The Bishops lived up to their advance notices by taking advantage of every scoring opportunity and defeating the Hill- toppers -15-41. Marquette was hurt by the loss of four regulars, but nevertheless made it a game all the way. In the second round of games, Cathedral upset the Preps 25-21-if Marquette wanted any share of the title, it would have to defeat Messmer in the last game of the season. This was no easy task, but the Blue and Gold cagers were up to it. Throughout the first half the score remained close, but in the third quarter Marquette pulled safely ahead to win 48--12. Another glorious victory was the 50-35 win over Campion's high-geared quin- tet in which game the Preps played their best ball of the season. Art Heldt was named captain by his teammates, and Gene Berce was a unanimous choice to the All-Catholic team. ,Q If w K 'Lv'... +z,. wa Z3 :jg-.. v ,QU L y nyc Y' if 1? .aan ID' ,, I I m J i M n , . 'B' Team Basketball This year the B Team registered I2 victories out of 18 starts. In his first year as coach, lfr. Ulrich took up the reins and did a splendid job in developing his team. His ideals of lair play and good sportsmanship were an inspiration to the players. Under his eye the B Team bc-came one of the best working units in the city. The team was led by two high-scoring lor- wards, Francis Wtierl and Charles XX!interhalter, with 142 and 132 points respectively. Iienny Curran, Bill Diederich, and Andy Wfeber round' ed out the tirst team, while Bob Cfavanaugh, jac . Rogers, john Friar, jack Brady, and filiatliei Panosian also displayed fine abilities. At the left, Denny Curran sinks another ol his favorite pivot-push shots. 'Mural Basketball Champs Because of the new concentrated schedule in effect at Marquette this year, intramural sports activities were somewhat curtailed among the juniors and sene iors. A good wartime substitute was the basketball tournament held after school during March and April. The Trojans, senior team led by joe Lynch and Chuck Ziegler, proved to be the class of the league when it defeated a strong junior team tor the school championship. This phenomenal suc- cess has helped to establish Marquette firm- ly in the sports spotlight, as during this time the junior Hilltoppers have won 24 con- secutive track meets. A record so sensational may be attributed to outstanding material -but it would be much more accurate to attribute it to the fine coaching of Mr. Beaudry. It is no coincidence that since he came to Marquette, the track team has not lost one meet. Nor is it coincidence that since the Brennan brothers have been on the team together the Preps' victory string has re- mained intact. This year both boys pole vaulted 12 feet 1 inch for the best mark in the state, while jim's 23.7 in the 200 yard low hurdles and Terry's 15.6 in the highs both establish new school records. Other outstanding performances were Phil Hahn's 52.9 in the 440, and jim DufTy's 2:O7.3 in the half mile. Foley Burg, linriglit, Boxing Team liirmly established as a school sports activity, boxing has come into its own at Mar- quette. This is chiefly due to the effort of the coach, Mr. Coomes, who rounded up all the necessary equipment, and thus made boxing possible for a large number of interested students. A boxing ring, purchased by Father Ireland, S.j., was set up in the Mat room, four punching bags were also installed. The season started in the middle of january and extended to midway in April. At the close of the season the ring was removed and set up in the gym, where a free show for the school was given on April 21. About 20 students participated in this sport. Out- standing fighters on the squad were XX'ally Schmidt, jim Hurley, jim Becker, and Herb Kaiser. Al Nemcek gave valuable assistance to Mr. Coomes in the work of coaching, refereeing, and managing the team. Silver glove pins were awarded to eight of the most active members. irst row: Ray Anfang, Hurley, Carey, Jas. Becker, Tetzlall, W. Schmidt. Second row: Mr. Coomes, S.-I., fcoachl, vUCl7L'l', R. Fine defensive play was turned in by Dick Os- manski at goal and Les Reutemann at letlt defense. Mr. lidward Mcfiarthy, and his icemen contended this year with an overdose of warm weather that prevented them from using the new hockey rink that was erected on the high school playground. Golf Team Undefeatedl For the first time in the history of the school, Mareluettes golf team has been able this year to claim that distinction. And it is a very real honor, for the linksmen met eleven schools, more than any other team in Milwaukee, and among these squads were some of the best in this area. The Prep golfers won most of their matches by decisive margins, but they showed their ability to come through in the clutch when low scores were needed. Prospects for next year do not look too bright, because live members of the seven man team are seniors. Captain Chuck Demp- sey, ,lack Doucette, Fred Reeve, Les Reuteman, and Harry Michelfelder will certainly be missed, but Tracy Mehr and Dave Foley form a strong nucleus for another winning team.
