They’ve forgotten to be bored, or even make a pretense of it. The subject they are learning is not what is important. This is an assign- ment that is holding their attention, of learning even those reluctant to be held. The bell rings, and they don’t want to leave. I don’t want to either. They've finally discovered that learning is exciting, and I’ve finally discovered that’s the most important lesson I can teach. Rae Turnbull Mary Erickson - Nurse LaVonne Hutsell - Secretary R. L. To An Athlete: There are little eyes upon you, And they're watching night and day; There are little ears that quickly take in every word you say; There are little hands all eager to do anything you do; And a little boy who's dreaming of the day he'll be like you. You're the little fellow’s idol, you're the wisest of the wise, in his little mind about you, no suspicions ever rise; He believes in you devoutly, holds that all you say and do, he will say and do, in your way when he’s grown-up like you. There's a wide-eyed little fellow, who believes you're always right, and his ears are always open, and he watches day and night; You are setting an example every day in all you do, for the little boy who's waiting to grow up and be like you. The ’85 Cub Football team plagued with injuries and lack of depth with only twelve people out for the team suffered a disappointing 1 and 8 season. Even so, the team with seven returning letterwinners still managed to play many good games and beat Benedict in the final game in front of a Homecoming crowd to end the season on a winning note. Those receiving honors were: Mike Larson, First team All- Conference defense (linebacker) and All-Area Team by Grand Island Independent. Dana Harris, First Team All-Conference Defense (End) and Honorable Mention by Grand Island Independent. Greg comes into the huddle as they announce the starting line-up. The '85-'86 Girls’ Basketball Team was very successful in terms of their 14 win and 3 loss record. There was some feeling of being unsuccessful because of the premature ending of the season during the Sub-District Tournament finals. The sting of that defeat has a tendency to linger, but it too will pass. Other successes recorded during the season were as follows: Crossroads Conference Regular Season Champions with a 9-1 record. Crossroads Conference Tourney Third Place Winner. Crossroads Conference Tournament Scoring Record (70 points vs Benedict) Final Top Ten Ranking in D-1 (8th in the World Herald, 9th in the Lincoln dournal Star and 3rd in the Grand Island area). Gave the D-1 State Champion, Exeter, their only defeat. (a 59-56 overtime win for Marquette) With successes such as those mentioned above it is easy to commend the young ladies on this team for their efforts and for the example they set for teams that will follow them. Through me spirits immortal speak the message that makes the world weep, and laugh, and wonder and worship. I tell the story of love, the story of hate, the story that saves and the story that damns. I am incense upon which prayers float to heaven. I am the smoke which palls over the battlefield, where men lie dying with me on their lips. I am close to the marriage altar, and when the graves open I stand near by. I call the wanderer home, I rescue the soul from the depths, I open the lips of lovers, and through me the dead whisper to the living. One I serve as I serve all: and the king I make my slave as easily as I subject his slave. I speak through the birds of the air, the insects of the field, the crash of waters on rock-ribbed shores, the sighing of wind in the trees, and I am even heard by the soul that knows me in the clatter of wheels on city streets. I know no brother, yet all men are my brothers: I am the father of the best that is in them, and they are fathers of the best that is in me: I am of them, and they are of me. For the past three weeks, I've been on the case of the missing mascot. The mascot was discovered missing almost twenty years ago. The year is 2006. My first suspect was Dana Harris, We found him at the place where he spent most of his life - the school. While interrogating Dana, we found him to be the new principal at Marquette. His only response to why he wanted to be principal was, “As long as | can help it, there will always be a Mr. Harris as principal.” As long as | was in the building, 1 decided to question another suspect. The suspect was Rhonda Slatter. Well, | didn't have to look far to find Rhonda. She was in the place where she spent 95% of her senior year - Mr. Jacobsen’s office. While talking to Rhonda, as she was cleaning. we asked why. Rhonda replied, “It's like the Navy - it’s not just a job, it's an adventure.” Well after not receiving a lot of information from either suspect I decided to venture over to the Central City Mall and question Rob Paup. While talking to Rob, we found that he had worked his way up to Assistant Pet Food Manager. Rob still was not sure what was going on, so we let him go. | decided to head back to Marquette, | headed back to the school - | had forgotten to question Tracy Ortegren. When I went down stairs to the ag room, | found Tracy had picked up where Mr. Mcintyre had left off. She is not a certified Ag teacher. She claims she has decided to devote her time and life to agriculture. When I asked what her life-long goal was, she replied, “To win four national titles in land judging.” After leaving the school, I decided to do some research of my own on my next suspect who was Lisa Ferguson. I found Lisa to be the biggest surprise of all. Lisa had turned very evil. She had framed her dad on embezzlement charges and now runs the Marquette Bank. Lisa refused to say anything or answer any of my questions. Very Interesting. Well, next I headed for Lincoln. My information on Donna Menke was almost perfect. It wasn't hard to locate Donna at her home away from home - Memorial Stadium. Upon interviewing Donna, we found that Donna is not assistant coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. When I asked Donna what she wants out of life, she answered, “To shut Oklahoma out at least once.” Well, it was pretty clear that Donna wasn't the person 1 was looking for. | still hadn't found the thief. But I hadn't questioned all the suspects. Jim Ricketts I found to be completely different from the information I had about him. My sources said Jim would be the perfect suspect. After talking to Jim, I found out that he was a world class cyclist. Jim has won six “Tour De France” bicycle races and was named “Athlete of the World” two years in a row. Jim was not the prime suspect anymore. Well, | wasn't about to quit on this case. I still had not questioned Carol Jackson. Just as sources had said, Carol was relatively easy going. While visiting with Carol in her California apartment, | found she owns and operates a health food store. She has been secretly training for the 1988 Olympics where she hopes to bring home 4 gold medals. While in California, | decided to visit another Marquette alumnus and suspect. Derek Nissen. “My job is fun,” is all Derek could say to me as I spoke to him in his Beverly Hills home. It wasn't hard to track down Derek as I'm sure you have all seen him on T.V. Derek is the new host of T.V.’s Love Connection. When I asked what he thought the most important thing in the world was he replied, “chasing women.” He told me another Marquette native and California resident, Tonja Jacobsen might be helpful in solving the case of the missing mascot. Tonja owns a chain of tanning booths nationwide called “Mrs. T's Tanning Booths.” She claims it all started as an idea and now everything is going great. Her next plan is to establish booths worldwide. She did tell me where | could find Chip Pollard. Chip was no big surprise to me. He had married his high school sweetheart. Lisa Pritchett. Chip has now opened and operates his own computer store called “Computer CHIP’s”. dust as my source said, Lisa still has the last word. “After years of training and waiting it has all paid off, “ claims Shauna Manka. I recently spoke with Shauna and she told me that her first worldwide tour will soon start, Ma-Shauna, as she is called by most of her fans, will release her first album, MaShauna Live, in a couple of months. MaShauna also claims that she plans on doing some really hot videos. Shauna suggested I try talking to Greg Ruzicka. My files on Greg aren't really clean. It seems he used to be a con-artist. I figure he is a prime suspect. | headed to Detroit thinking the case was over. What I didn’t know was that Greg had been working for the Chrysler Corporation for the past 20 years and so he couldn't have done it. He is one of the many people that test drive new cars, Greg claims that working for Chrysler has always been his secret fantasy. When I asked him to describe himself in one word, he simply replied, “Mopar”. With Greg in the clear, | came to the conclusion it had to be my number 2 suspect, Mike Larson. | arrived to talk to Mike only to learn he had entered a monastery and taken a vow of silence. I couldn't believe it. Mike was always the loudest guy in school. Well, | could see it would be a waste of time trying to question somebody that couldn't speak. So I decided on a wild hunch to go question Pat Hatch. While it took me a long time to find Pat, I finally tracked her down. She had been living back in the thickets down in Arkansas with a band of trouble-making short people. | didn't get a chance to get close to her home as | was fired upon with guns by a group of hoodlums. I fled at once, and realized that it couldn't have been Pat as to steal mascot would be boring for her. While looking over my page of suspects, 1 realized I had not talked to Billy Carnes yet. | traveled clear up to Princeton College where I found Billy not as a student, but as a professor. While interviewing Billy, 1 found she enjoys hanging around with the rich students and loves bein g a part of the Ivy League. When | asked her the question, “What would you choose if you had only one wish.” she just smiled and said, “Money, of course!” So that does it for Billy; she wouldn't steal a used mascot; she would simply go out and buy a new one. While moving on down the list of suspects | came across the name of Craig Bamesberger. While talking to Craig I learned that he was David Letterman's back-up in case Dave couldn't make it. | also learned that Craig is also currently on the PGA Tour. While talking to Craig he didn't seem to have any new information for me so it was obvious that he had no part of stealing the school’s mascot. Well, now | was really stuck. | didn't know what to do. But then I remembered I still had 3 suspects left so I decided to give them a shot. My first of the last 3 suspects was Mel Holtan. To question Mel, I had to travel clear up to Wyoming and visit her on her sheep ranch. While talking to Mel I learned that she had divorced and remarried Kevin Hutsell five different times. When I asked why she had chosen the country life she said, “I've always felt that | should work on @ sheep ranch.” And with that she got up and left. Well, nothing new here but I still had two hopefuls yet to question. For both of these suspects to be questioned, I have to travel across the world My first stop was in Africa where I had the chance to talk with Barb George. While talking to Barb | discovered that she is now a full-time member of the peace-corps. Barb says that since she gets along and enjoys helping other ethnic groups she has decided to stay there her whole life. Well, after not gaining any knowledge from Barb | had to question my last source, which was Marni Nelson. Upon visiting Marni, we found that she now lives in a harem and has married an oil-rich, multi-millionaire Arab. She says she can either be found most of the time spending money or riding one of her many Arabian horses. Well, after talking to Marni I found that maybe I should go back to the scene of the crime and double check it. When | reached Marquette I went back into the school and found that the mascot was now back on the wall. I couldn't figure it out. But then it hit me. That's when I solved the case. The answer ... simple. They simply took the mascot off the wall and put it in the shop and repainted it. | had solved the case of the missing mascot! 51 z = ; 5 5) Sees oh rm LEE eee: Eighth Grade Promotion Kindergarten Promotion We Can't Discover New Oceans, Until We Have The Courage To Lose Sight Of The Shore. 1986 Graduating Seniors: Back Row - Rob Paup, Craig Bamesberger, Mike Larson, Derek Nissen, Greg Ruzicka, Melanie Holtan, Tonja Jacobsen, Tracy Ortegren, Lisa Ferguson.
