This is her second year here. Administration Dr. Melvin E. Zichek has been the superintendent at Marquette Consolidated Schools since 1963. Dr. Zichek is a person who is easy to talk to and is very interested in school activities. His responsibilities are many and he puts a lot of effort into them. The annual st aff wishes Dr. Zichek well in his future endeavors. The students and faculty as well as the community will miss his presence. He has been a handy-man, helping anyone who needed help. After everyone else had gone home, he would clean the school. When Dr. Zichek was at meetings, Lin drove the kindergarteners home. If anybody needed something fixed Lin was there to help. His presence will be missed by both faculty and students. Everybody's friend: Mr. Linley Berck and the kindergarteners. Starting School- Everything Was New” Six kindergarteners learned many new things their first year at school. They enjoyed studying the ABC's, working in letter books and painting pictures. Another fun project was making puppets. Two field trips were conducted in connection with their letterbooks. After learning the letter “N’ they visited the Aurora News Register to learn about newspapers. A trip to the Pizza Hut helped them to learn about the letter “P’’. Each student helped make a pizza and when it was finished baking they enjoyed eating it. Kindergarten graduation for the six students was held on the afternoon of May 14, 1979. Learning Reading and Writing.” First and second graders learned a great deal about plants and soil. Mr. David Vetter gave a talk about different soils. One experiment was raising plants under different growing conditions. The classes visited the Aurora Greenhouse where each student received a plant. Pen pals in Plant City, Florida exchanged letters, cards and Christmas greetings. They participated in a National Weekly Reader balloon contest. Fifty balloons were filled with air and contained Marquette addresses. The balloons were released; the object was to see which balloon would go the greatest distance. Miss Barbara Shroyer, Teacher. Learning To Multiply Divide Third and fourth graders enjoyed several field trips. One trip to the Grand Island weather station culminated a weather unit. Another trip was to Bethesda nursing home to present a Christmas program using large murals created by the students. Both classes enjoyed preparing nutritious snacks while studying a health unit. Fourth graders took mini trips during a Nebraska study unit. Winfield Se venth graders concentrated mostly on money making projects and decided to save their money for future years. They had concessions at two jr. high games. Besides bringing baked goods from home, they made brow- nies, popcorn and carameled apples in home ec. They also sold Current stationery and greeting cards. Todd Danhauer's father spon- sored a class sledding party in their pasture in February. The seventh grade class also held a party at the Community Center in York. The 8th graders were involved in the magazine sale campaign again this year. On March [6th the class enjoyed an evening of fun at the Community Center in York. They topped the evening off with lunch before returning home. The big event of the year occurred on the evening of May | 7th when the fourteen members of the class received their diplomas. V. Pres. Their only fund-raising project consisted of a bake sale at one of the senior high girls’ basketball games. They did not have a class party this year. They had bake sales for junior high volleyball games and senior high girls’ basketball games. There was a bake sale, car wash and slave days in the fall. Again in spring they had slave days and helped carry out chickens from the Marquette Chicken House. All these projects were necessary to finance the Junior-Senior Banquet and to put aside money for their own senior activities next year. The Banquet was held on April 26 at the Bonanza Steak House in Grand Island. This an nual event was hosted by the juniors to honor the 1979 Mar- quette senior class. A new item this year was blue and gold Cub tee-shirts. The Club also sponsored pep rallies for each football and basketball game. The girls held a football appreciation dance and served pizzaburgers after a football game. If the girls spoke to the boys on Valentines Day they lost their paper hearts and the boy to accumulate the most hearts won the title of Mr. Irresistible. They also had an Awareness Day in which they spent the day being mute, blind or crippled. In March they sponsored a marathon dance to raise money for the March of Dimes. In the summer they had a good FHA Retreat with the help of their sponsor Mrs. Dahlke. Their main money raising project was the annual spring FHA Salad Supper. The Bumps And Bruises Even though the Cubs lost the first Tom Sailors adds the point after attempt five games, they refused to give up the fight. The win over Monroe gave the team the added drive and the fire to pull off the big upset of the football season - the defeat of Hampton. At the close of the first half, Hampton fumbled and the Cubs capitalized with the TD - score at New scoreboard adds life to the game. _—ihalf time was 16 all. Hampton added 6 points but the Cubs not to be out done scored a touchdown AND the point after attempt. The ball remained in the Cubs possession during the final minutes of SCORES the game. The final score was 24-22. All conference honors went to two FOOTBALL Opp Marquette players, Mark Jacobsen McCool named first team offensive end and Benedict second team defensive end and Tom Hordville Sailors named second team offensive Shelby and defensive half back. In spite of defeats the Marquette volleyball girls maintained their determination and desire to play a good game regardless of the final score. When the season ended the girls had 4 wins. Volleyball coach this year was Mr. Carl Abele. Mr. Abele was assisted by Mrs. Terri Teel, a former Marquette High School student who played volleyball during her school years. Senior Jackie Hutsell received a CRC Honorable Mention All-Conference Award as a setter. Three senior girls gave their utmost effort during their last year at Marquette High School. Homecoming King and Queen 1978 were announced on Friday, October | 3th. “Life's Been Good” was the theme and the gym was decorated in shades of light and dark blue. Master of Ceremonies for the program was Senior Kevin Griffith. Skits were put on by the M-Club, Spirit Club and FHA. Mr. Steve Jacobsen gave the speech and Mrs. Debra Stranberg presented the wall awards to seniors 3rd place, juniors 2nd place and sophomores Ist place. The thrill of victory was known by Marquette as the Cubs upset Hampton, 24-22. The attendants were escorted onto the field in Corvettes at halftime. The theme for this year's big event was “Every |’s a Winner’. Many hours were spent decorating the school gym in royal blue and silver which lended a disco air to the festivities. Bernie Saggau from the lowa Boys Athletic Association was the guest speaker. Students and adults alike enjoyed his message and his humor. Mr. Saggau emphasized that discipline, pose, desire and determination obtained through a sports program helps to build character and there is no real loser in sports unless he quits. That Very Special Jr-Sr Banquet The 1979 Junior-Senior Banquet was held on April 26, at Bonanza Sirloin Pit in Grand Island. The theme was “Memories are Forever’. and the colors were blue and silver. The evening meal consisted of chicken fried steak, baked potatoes, salad bar, Texas toast and beverage of their choice. The master of ceremonies was junior Troy Gustafson. Junior Julie Kauffman welcomed the seniors and faculty members. Senior Daryl Harney gave the response. Miss Deb Harris, Resourse teacher, gave a speech on memories. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Gordon and Mark Harris. The senior class will was read by Brenda Dietrich and the prophecy was read by Jackie Hutsell. Mr. Melvin Zichek gave the invocation and benediction. Mr. Steve Jacobsen thanked the juniors on behalf of the faculty. All of the juniors and seniors as well as the faculty will remember this as a very special evening because of the relaxed and friendly atmosphere the juniors created. It’s hard work which proves worthwhile when finished. In addition to the yearbook, the Staff also assumed responsibility for compiling a special homecoming program. This ‘first’ included information on coaches, cheerleaders and royalty.
