Note the scaffolding still on the brick school front. This photo courtesy of Mrs. Mary Anderson For many years the old bell sounded the starting of school. The white frame school house was built in 1884 on a lot just west of the present building. The bell was housed on the roof and Mrs. Otto (Clara) Rasmussen remembers even as a child the bell had a rich tone sounding like a church bell. When the brick school was constructed in 1913, the bell was placed on the new roof and still peeled out the start of school. The frame school was moved northwest of Marquette. It was converted into a granary which still stands today. After an automatic bell system was installed, the old bell rang only to signal a ball game victory. In 1977 it was removed from the roof because the wood tower was rotting. It currently is located in the vestibule of the new edition. At the present time the school board is considering plans for a new bell tower on the front school lawn. The old bell has weathered the seasons of time well. It represents a rich heritage that deserves a place of prominence - a reminder of the past; yet its presence gives a promise for the youth of the future. 1978 elementary school students. 1911 students in front of the old school.
