THE CUB Marquette School Marquette, Nebraska Volume 32 ' 4 S TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty and Administration Student Life Activities Athletics Classes Graduates This picture taken in 1913 shows the school bell in the tower of the frame school house. Note the scaffolding still on the brick school front. This photo courtesy of Mrs. Mary Anderson For many years the old bell sounded the starting of school. The white frame school house was built in 1884 on a lot just west of the present building. The bell was housed on the roof and Mrs. Otto (Clara) Rasmussen remembers even as a child the bell had a rich tone sounding like a church bell. When the brick school was constructed in 1913, the bell was placed on the new roof and still peeled out the start of school. The frame school was moved northwest of Marquette. It was converted into a granary which still stands today. After an automatic bell system was installed, the old bell rang only to signal a ball game victory. In 1977 it was removed from the roof because the wood tower was rotting. It currently is located in the vestibule of the new edition. At the present time the school board is considering plans for a new bell tower on the front school lawn. The old bell has weathered the seasons of time well. It represents a rich heritage that deserves a place of prominence - a reminder of the past; yet its presence gives a promise for the youth of the future. 1978 elementary school students. 1911 students in front of the old school. A Halloween party was held and at Christmas Time the students spent the last day before vacation baking and decorating cookies. They viewed films, exchanged gifts and enjoyed a surprise visit from Santa. An Easter party was held with students coloring eggs. They joined the Fifth and Sixth graders for a trip to Grand Island visiting Nebraska Veterans’ Home, the kennels, KRGI, Stuhr Museum and Fairacres Dairy. Special class room projects included making papier maché animals for a science project. Life size cutouts were made for a self-concept study. These were stuffed with newspapers and hung from wires giving the appearance of dancing children. During a study of nutrition they toured the Aurora Pizza Hut. The Second graders also presented a TV show and two plays for the First graders. They’re doing a good job under the leadership of their class sponsor, Miss Debra Waterman. Money-making projects to help finance upcoming events included a box and bar candy sale. They also had a bake sale at a Jr. Hi basketball game. Tradition dictates that the freshmen give a party for the seniors. As May 10th graduation arrived the thoughts became solemn as the high school days in Marquette drew to an end. Each of the fourteen seniors who had shared so much would now be going separate ways, meeting new friends. Before the final best wishes, good luck and goodbyes were said, a few tears were shed. Even these feelings were shared as a group who had come to know each other well. Passing time going to Colorado-Bill, Mike, Ron, Roxane. Mike and Ron relaxing in the pool while on sneak trip.
