OGOICAUGU ne hundred years ago, at the height of the scientific development which produced our twentieth century civili- zation, occurred an event which was unscientific, yet more important than the steam engine or the sewing machine. This event was the series of appearances of Our Lady to a poverty-stricken little girl in the French town of Lourdes- -Bernadette Soubirous. At the highest point of medical progress, there are things which medicine cannot accomplish. At the climax of his mental development, man has a need which science cannot meet. The healings and prayers, the processions and renewals of faith at the great shrine of Lourdes prove this. Perhaps that is one reason why God chose this particular moment in history, exactly one century ago, to manifest His power, His glory and His mercy. To Our Lady conceived Immaculate, who appeared to St. Bernadette, we dedicate this issue of the Marquetan.

OUR 1Th6m ffm f7Q ' Mitzi ' k he theme of this year 's Marquetan is the life and labors of Father James Marquette, SJ., for whom our school was named. He lived from 1636-1675. It was in the course of his work as a missionary among the Indians that Fr. Marquette discovered our great Mississippi River in 1673. In 1887 a bill was passed by the assembly at Madison, Wisconsin, authorizing the state to place a statue of Mar- quette in the Hall of Fame in Washington D. C. This statue appears on the opposite page and on the cover of our book. Bronze copies of the statue have been erected at Marquette Michigan, and at Mackinac Island where he was buried.
