Facult efore leaving for the missions in 1666, Father Mar- quette taught in the Jesuit schools of France. In those days the Fathers wore beards, and the ruff-collared boys had to leave their swords outside of the classroom. But as far as class itself was concerned, there wasn't much difference from today: Lessons, homework, and the teachers' never-ending efforts to preserve discipline. Father Marquette's religious training had taught him to regard all his boys, rich or poor, as souls redeemed by the Blood of Christ. This motive helped him face the battle of the classroom each day with courage and zeal. In the education of twentieth-century boys, Marquette's brothers in religion are motivated by the same principles, prepared by the same training. Theirs is truly a labor of love.
