The first phase in our Retreat is a fundamental one, and absolutely necessary for all that is to follow. Its aim is to make us realize first of all that life is a serious business, a contest in which our souls are at stake. And since the going will be rough at times, it is important that we be in shape. The sooner we get rid of our old habits - softness, vanity, cowardice - the better off we will be . . . Where did we get this first nudge toward the contest, the direction to take, and the example to get started, if not from our teachers? What gratitude, then, we owe them - especially when at times it must have been a difficult task for them! But they considered it reward enough when once we sincerely got under way - and met the Teacher Who, in the next phase, was waiting for us.
