That is why the three days of our annual Retreat were the most sex i ti ' J6 ,Q Jfuretnurh important days of the school year. For those three days we got the real line-up on life. Only in the light of their lessons could the rest of the year - just as the rest of our lives - be seen correctly. As the Retreat, then, was the real theme for the year, so we feel it appropriate to make it the basic theme also for our yearbook. We shall try to unfold the story of Marquette, 1952-1953, in terms of the four phases of a Retreat, as outlined by St. Ignatius Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises. A quotation from St. Paul summarizes perfectly this lgnatian outline. ln its inspired words We truly see the line-up of this year f and our lives. Why then, since we are watched from above by such a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of all that weighs us down ,... and run with all endurance, the race for which we are entered. SAINT IGNATIUS LOYOLA w I I ehinatiun KCI j I 1 I s Why then, sznce we are walched from above by such a cloud of wimesses . . .H -St. Paul. There are many in fact to whom we owe thanks for this tremendous gift: a year of Catholic education. T o our parents first of all, for their faith and sacrifice. Also to our teachers, for their patience and inspiration. And to all the nameless benefactors of Marquette. They are the cloud of witnesses, waiting to see how we use their gift to us . . . To all .of them we would like to dedicate this book, as a testimonial of something we have accompolished with their help. But since we want to individualize this dedication, we think we can most appropriately do so by singling out for our special tribute of gratitude the great Master of all Retreats and Csince he founded the Jesuitsj the indirect Founder of Marquette: Saint Ignatius Loyola. To him, after God, we owe the priceless picture of the only true life. 8 Fr. Logan at the Conseeration of the Mass in St. Joseplfs Church. be etreat As we have already mentioned in the I oreword, the Retreat was truly the most important three days of the sehool year. That explains the theme we have chosen for this yearbook: the year-long extension, the realization, of that Retreat. The three days themselves, QMonday, Tuesday, and VVednesday, Nov. 2-1, 25, 265 were as concentrated as any elass day could ever be, but in a far dillerent way. In stead of classes one after another, and the inevitable rush and roar of the periods in between, we had three talks every day, by Father Logan, in the sacred surroundings of St. .Iosephls . . . Fr. Before and aftier the talks, we had lots of time to think fn and to prziy. lt was this time left to ourselves, in silence and alone with Our Lord, that really made it our Retreait, with results that some of the pages in this yearbook may indicate e but can never fully clescrilmo. The first phase in our Retreat is a fundamental one, and absolutely necessary for all that is to follow. Its aim is to make us realize first of all that life is a serious business, a contest in which our souls are at stake. And since the going will be rough at times, it is important that we be in shape. The sooner we get rid of our old habits - softness, vanity, cowardice - the better off we will be . . . Where did we get this first nudge toward the contest, the direction to take, and the example to get started, if not from our teachers? What gratitude, then, we owe them - especially when at times it must have been a difficult task for them! But they considered it reward enough when once we sincerely got under way - and met the Teacher Who, in the next phase, was waiting for us. I2 FATHER RICHARD S. Here was the Leader, for His earthly life was the perfect model for all possible lives, whether the quiet, hidden type - as at Nazareth, or the one Hlled with intense and varied activityfas in His Public Life. In either case, only Our Lord could set the sights for us. Fired by the grace of His leadership, we tried to follow out the activities, modelled after His, in our school year. There was, to start with, the hidden grind of the daily classes - lessons in labor and patience. Then there were the others, more public and varied - debating, dramatics, music, publications, social events - that were all so many lessons in experience as future Catholic leaders, as other Christsn. 22 Officers of the Mothers Club Mesdames Marie Ditter, Lena Tholan, Luey Vonhlssen, and Aliee Piehe. jllilutbers' Iuh The Mothers of Marquette students play an important role in Marquette High School. Their eooperation and iniative in all sehool-run affairs always insure sueeess. The objective of this auxiliary elub is the advance of the moral, intellectual, and cultural interests ol' the boys by cooperating with their teachers. These aims were studied in the monthly meetings held in the sc-hool hall, and they were applied throughout the year and the students were greatly benefited by the closer understand- ing between their parents and teaehers. The mothers' generosity and uselfishness showed forth in the financial backing of the debate and dramaties elubs, and the new lockers in the sehool halls Some of the parents at one ofthe monthly meetings. l Il'lul.l1.X. Who, I0 'win His prize of blessedness, endurefl J the cross and made light of its shame . . . The career of great deeds begun so enthusiastically in the second phase now needed some toughening. Leadership is genuine only after it is tested N by hard- ship, by competition, by the prospect of defeat. As the perfect Leader in all events, so it was here too that Christ Our Lord showed us the way. For He too had an obstacle to overcome - His Passion. And as a supreme test of His loyalty to the glory of His Father, He faced death-even death on a cross. Perfect heroism! Where the grimness of the contest was a direct challenge to a gallant Heart . . . Here too our school year gave us an oppertunity for practice. For that was the motive, basically, of our participation in athletics - a test of our character and sportsmanship, to see whether or not we could really take it. It was a school of hard knocks, hardly worth the passing victories of the moment. What alone gave it real worth was its lesson for future athletes of Christ . 40 Mr. Hayes Pat Sweeney Mr. Tod Bradley Buck Laliissonivrc' Fr. Richard llrarllvy FII. Batali Team Mascots: Tommy and Eddie Laliissoniere, Baseball This year, the Marquette baseball team should complete a very successful season and may even win the Valley title. We have an excellent battery in Dave Dexter as pitcher and Ed Zander as catcher. These American Legion stars are backed up by Roge Desmarias and Ranny Poulin, both pitchers, and Joe Batali, catcher. In a preseason game with Yakima High, Dexter pitched no hit no run ball and struck out 6 in only 3 innings. Zander clouted 2 home runs. lX'Iarquette beat Yakima High by a score of 5 to l . . . The infield is eomposed of Phil Belair on lst, Nordy Carlson on 2nd, Larry Mc-liibben as shortstop, and in the hot corner at 3rd, Jerry Waltman, thus forming a fairly good combination. The outfield is rather inexperienced but as the season progresses they should improve tremendously. With experience from this year, watch Harv Waltman, Tom Sewell, and Ilarold Snyder put in a great season next year. The B squad is made up of underelassmen. They are mostly Frosh. The sehool has dropped the Junior High program so that the Fresh can gain more experience by playing varsity ball. With a few breaks during the season the baseball team could easily bring the Valley title back to Marquette. 111 l hll Belair, lb Dave llexier, p Gene Slagle, el' llowie Snyder. rf l.ai'ry Nleliibln n Boll Hoge lJi'SlIl2tI'2l.lS, p Ranny Poulin. p l'l. Jesus, Who nou' sits at the righthaml of lhc throne of Godf' e St. Paul The fourth and last phase of all has come already. A year of education nears its completion, and with St. Ignatius we watch the grand finale in the earthly life of Our Lord. By a life and death of absolute perfection, Christ merits for His Man- hood the fulness of the glory of His Father. And so He enters into the eternal Commencement of His Kingdom. There He awaits us, our Leader, till the ranks are filled by His graduates from the training period of earth . . . That is the last - and lifelong - lesson of our school year. We pass in review - Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Graduating Seniors, - all of us one step further on the way. With grateful memories and joyful expectations, we will learn to live this most important part of our education - as we face a future that begins with each tomorrow, and will not end but in the eternal commencement of the only true life! 111 ROOM 3 11C11LSS11f111'0I'S11f M. The members of the HM and Squire Clubs were given the task of cor- recting the misbehaved. Big Dan Verhey's paddle quickly mended the ways of the out of line and diligently kept the students on the straight and narrow. There is an event that comes at the beginning of every year for the poor little Freshmen. lt is Frosh Initiation and the time for contests and games. It is also time for the yearlings to wash upper- elassmen's ears, shine their shoes, and preform many other little jobs for the Seniors' convenience. l7on't worry, Frosh, you will get your turn in a few years. 5 r 69 WY' haul :L grvzlt footlmll svzison. Yet this climax of Graduation is really a double event, and sometimes A as it it was this year f held on two successive days, Sunday and Monday, May 31st and June lst . . . The Graduates of Marquette High School and St. Joseph's Academy . . . For the first event, every bit as important as the final evening of speeches and diplomas and gold medals, is the Baccalaureate Mass. lt is our solemn 'tthank youu to God forthe blessings begged of the Holy Ghost at the beginning, and lavished by Him so generously all through the year - and years. E The Bacealaureate'l is a venerable title dating from the great medieval universities. lt means the Bachelorship'l, the first degree of completed scholarship, by which the graduate is entitled to pursue the further degrees of Masta and Docto1 '. By anticipation we use the term in high school, for in a certain real sense our four years of high school education form the first, and indispensable, unit of our learning for life . . . 79 bunhuy, iliilap 31st . . . O'Leary's musical hit, Squire's Inn lnvadedn. This pep-rally, a little more than the usual, was typical of the spirit of the student body before a football or basketball game or boxing mateh. This spirit and enthusiasm we will certainly miss in the years to come. Another memory we won't forget was our famous Football Banquet down at Gasperreti's. There after the dinner we received our letters and awards, and then an evening of dancing. Many of us have finished our last year of playing in any organized sport. But with our letter M that we won in the various sports we will take and keep and treasure as a memento of our years at Marquette High School.
