L g f x 9 + X : 10, and forty ambitious freshmen are work- ing, under the direction of a good portion of Mar- quette,s faculty, trying to solve this not so simple equation. While a mathematician would say X : 1, any freshman can tell you that, when means freshmanv and H109 means sophomore, solving the equation involves a good deal more than transpo- sition and subtraction - requiring, in fact, a thorough one year course in subjects such as religion, English, ancient history, music, science, algebra, and Latin. First, our sample freshie finds himself confronted with religion, 1X7 of the unknown. Under the di- rection of Sister Mary Bernadine, O.S.l3., he studies sanctifying grace - Godis life in us - and learns how it can be increased and what a difference it should make to one who possesses it. English comprises the second IX7, and our little man pushes himself through literature and grammar, forming a basis for further studies. The class have written a number of excellent poems, four of which have been published, given commercials, and de- signed brochures advertising the plays they studied.
