Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1982 volume:

OUR LADY With an educational background stemming from their foundation in 1535, the nuns of the Ursuline Order came to the Alton area in 1859 to begin another venture into the field of education. Their first school was an academy and boarding school for girls. As their fame as Catholic educators grew, the Ursulines opened many parish elementary schools in the Alton area. They were a natural choice for Bishop James A. Griffin to implement his plan for co-educational secondary school in Alton. That plan became a reality with the opening of Marquette High School in 1927, the first co-educational high school in the Diocese of Springfield We would like to dedicate this yearbook to these Ursuline Nuns who have devoted their time, knowledge, and most of all, love to the students of Marquette. The total length of the Lenten fast, during which observants ate sparingly, was established in the fourth century as forty days. In the Eastern churches, where both Saturdays and Sundays are regarded as festival days, the period of Lent compromises the eight weeks before Easter; in the Western churches, where only Sunday is regarded as a festival, the forty-day period begins on Ash Wednesday and extends with the omission of Sundays, to the day before Easter. The observance of fasting or other forms of self-denial during Lent varies within the Protestant churches and the Anglican churches. These bodies emphasize the penitential aspect of the Lenten season. The Roman Catholic Church has in recent years relaxed its laws on fasting. According to an apostolic constitution issued by Pope Paul IV in February 1966, fasting and abstinence during Lent are obligatory only on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
