If you hove nor been reading rhe newspapers or tuning in on rhe news, rhe realization rhar man ' s desire for power has cre- ared rhe calamiries which surround us will come as a shock. The rragedy lies in rhe fact rhar we have come ro accept rhe misuse of power as lighrly as we expect bulbs ro lighr up ar rhe rouch of a switch. Reinhold Niebuhr said, As individuals men believe rhar rhey ought ro love and serve each orher, and establish justice between each other. As racial, economic and narional groups, rhey rake for themselves whatever rheir power can command. Will you accepr such a sraremenr as a rruism? Our own Henry Kissinger said, Power creates irs own legitimacy. ” Gusrave Le Don wrote, a truly pacifist people would soon disappear from history. Finally, good old Napoleon said, Friendship is only a word. I love no one. I cite such quorarions ro excite and perhaps ro provoke you ro rhe point rhar you and those rhar follow you rake issue with such sraremenrs. Many of you hold posirions of power in rhe political world, in rhe business world and in rhe professional world. I urge you ro prove those quoted above ro be wrong. I believe rhey are, and I believe you and future generations musr show rhar power used rarionally and benevolently can accord all people a happy life. Will you accepr rhe challenge? Sincerely, e.
