To The Class of 1978: It is traditional that principals in addressing seniors in a yearbook such as this tend to get rather philosophical about the future that awaits graduating seniors. Principals wax eloquent as they offer congratulations and words of wisdom and guidance. At times they appear trite. In spite of all of this, I truly feel that most principals are sincere in their efforts to convey to young people the need for courage and fortitude as they leave high school life. I certainly am sincere and candid when I speak of your life ahead. But perhaps the wisdom expressed by some of the world’s great minds would be more meaningful: “Life is short, but it is long enough to ruin any man who wants to be ruined.” Josh Billings “Life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises.” Samuel Butler “The great secret of life is digestion.” “Millions who long for immortality do not afternoon.” Sydney Smith know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday Susan Ertz “The poorest way to face life is with a sneer.” Theodore Roosevelt “It is not likely that any complete life has ever been lived which was not a failure in the secret judgment of the person who lived it.” Mark Twain The quotes cited above were excerpted from a news broadcast presented in 1950. The thoughts they provide are still valid today, and I offer them to the Class of 1978 as they leave the Marple Newtown Senior High School. In addition, I wish each and every one of you the very best as each of you commence another phase in your life. Dr. William C. Capriotti 2
