It depicts the misadventures of a poor young artist who plans a party for important guests, only to have the lights go out due to a burnt fuse minutes before the guests arrive. The playwright uses a clever device to depict this ca- lamity for our enjoyment. The reality of the sit- uation is reversed. For example, when the lights are on in the artists apartment, they are tech- nically off ' for the audience. We cannot see them. However, when the fuse blows, the actors are suddenly plunged into darkness, but the lights go on for the audience to be able to see the actors in their predicament. BLACK COM- EDY invites you to sit back and laugh at the misfortunes of a young man who is plagued by the pressures of T wentieth Century living. Edward Pollock SENIORS School Spirit?! “Leg Shots. And this is the Mrs.” 102 “Joy to the world “I just can’t hack this anymore.” “Come in, come in, my name is Mary Jo.” “Mrs. Zane will not be in today.” “You’ve got Hies in your eyes.” “Lipstick may be worn to school: ears are not to e.xceed six inches: necks are left up to the discretion of the teacher.” 103 H?3WXXH The class of 1970 bid a fond farewell to the Marple- Newtown stage with its stunning presentation of Inherit the Wind. This play, fittingly nicknamed Windy,” has a clear and direct message, which ideally suited the talents of the cast. Under the direction of the frank but always charming Mrs. Mddred Cadwallader, the story of the Scopes’ Monkey Trial was vividly portrayed by every- one, from the live monkey to the last extra. The dynamic debating a bility of Nathan Glazer came to the fore as he verbally grappled with the righteously pompous John Lehmann. The cast was characterized, on and offstage, by its experience and cooperative spirit as exemplified in the prayer meeting scene with the stern and sober rever- end, Craig Amarnick. The long hours on stage and the gentle criticism by the director showed that the cast did, indeed, inherit the wind . SAUERS PRINCIPAL Often we forget to thank those people who help us in special ways. Our lives are so busy and complicated. Our worries are so prominent. Our successes are so exhilarating that we “don’t have time.” At this moment, however, we want to express our personal thank you to Dr. Sauers by dedicating this yearbook to him. We appreciate his honest concern for the class of 1970: his readiness to listen to our problems and proposals, his open-mindedness to bridge the gener- ation gap, his flexibility, and his willingness to let us be ourselves. We are grateful because he allowed us to make our own mistakes and to profit by the results. But we ' re also grateful that he gave help when we faltered (“Oh, that Junior Class playl” ) and encouraged us when we succeeded ( the rejuvenated magazine sale . . . the film festival . . . and hurrah! a new site jbr graduation}. We hope that our unspoken thanks will be conveyed with the warmth and sin- cerity that we feel as we dedicate our Memories to Dr. Sauers. All together, one by one: All together we face the future. One by one we carve the pattern of our lives. Each one is his own master. And in the final analysis, it is not we. But rather, I. Diana Krauss ' 70 185 ALEXANDER ONE HR.
