SPORTS SENIORS ADVERTISEMENTS 9 23 39 65 85 134 To our Parents who are; Our advisors and guides, never too busy to help us, Our protectors and teachers, patient, interested, and under- standing . Our friends, believing in us and encouraging us. These are facets of our parents, who, most of all, love us. To them we dedicate this book. rOR[WORD The development of a generation is influenced by Speed, Force, Progress, and Time. These elements guide the promise, the growth and the fulfillment of life. The pace at which life moves depends upon Speed. In our generation the pace is rapid, for there are so many things to be done and so many opportuni- ties to be grasped. Force is the driving ambition that helps us reach our goals. Force pushes us through the obstacles in the path of Progress. The accomplishments of an age are signified by Progress. This year has brought a higher standard of living to our community, our commonwealth, and our country. Time is the elemental factor, without which Progress would be impossi- ble - Force, ineffectual - Speed, unnecessary. Time - the touch of the eternal - minute in quantity, all too precious in quality. f ■n • I A 1 I ■ft r 1 V t- ‘t SEATED: FayScherr, Robert Greer, Frank Capotosto, Dr. Kermit Stover, Charles Russell, Rolland Smith, William Zuspan. POLICY MMLRi; This is the group of people who represent our parents in formulating the policies of our school system. They are largely responsible for the fine education we now receive, because they have put into practice the most modern educational methods. Some of the advancements which the group has forwarded are the language laboratory and the hiring of a fine teaching staff. Our sin- cere thanks go to the School Board and its presi- dent, Mr. Frank Capotosto 6 THEV LEAD US Dr. Gruener, Dr. Stover, and Mr. Nye take time out to talk things over. To Dr. Stover, Mr. Nye, and Dr. Gruener we are indebted. They are the men who have put modern educational theory into practice in Marple- Newtown Senior High School. Our administrators have dedicated them- selves to giving us tEie best possible atmosphere in which to learn and they have brought to Marple -Newtown standards of which we shall always be proud. We, the Senior Class, are grateful for this leadership. 7 THEY nUH US ASOUI THE WORED EARL SHORES P.O.D. With President Ron Basener guiding the organization, the Student Council had charity drives, sponsored some dances, and held the annual variety show. Under the Student Council, Marple Newtown maintained its high standards and met the evaluation squarely. A monitor system was put into practice to keep order in the halls. Assemblies were planned by council members for the first time. With the guidance of Dr. Gruener and the offi- cers, the Student Council has continued to be the voice of the students in their school affairs. SEATED: Dr. Gruener, Secretary S. DeRosay, President R. Under the able leadership of Mr. Oberholtzer, they have given a Christ- mas carol service, and in the spring they presented exerpts from South Pacific . They also performed for the parents at P.T.A. In addition to these school concerts they sang carols for the busy Christmas shoppers at Snellenburgs. Some of the members have earned re- cognition for their fine work by being selected as members of the Southeastern District Chorus. i IW Vi, mBf Bottom Row: P. Brunner, N. Vile, M. Swerdlow, E. The group of nearly 100 musicians was chosen by competitive tryout in December. The orchestra personnel arrived at the senior high school in one of our ten- inch blizzards and followed a leng- thy practice schedule in spite of the weather out- side. Conductor Powell Middleton directed the work sessions and two fine concerts which featur- ed performances of musical works by many com- posers from Bach to Richard Rogers. Our musicians selected were: Richard King, Dick Schelecker, Chesley Duncan, David Melrose, Linda Schatkowski, Muriel Smith, Carol Holm, Aris Sevag, Karen Dix, Carol Nelson, Cheryl Stickle, Carol Lehman, and Catherine Martino. 44 m A A Long before the actual performance, the 100 youngsters were on stage practicing. Winter mufflers and boots were strewn over the auditorium as evidence of the surprise blizzard that blanketed the community. They stayed with members of our own orchestra, were treated to a special per- formance of Can-Can, and left with many memories of their musical week - end. ROW ONE: J. The band, with its fine playing and intricate marching drills, is one of the highlights of any football game. Few bands can match M-N's for its school spirit. With Mr. Schultz and band co-captains Rick King and Dick Senges calling the signals, the M-N band is one our school can be proud of. At every assembly the band provides entertainment before the show. mm THE uMEnnEv School spirit was kept high because of the top-notch effort turned in by our cheerleading squad. Ably captained by Jane Null, the girls encouraged team and spectators alike, re- fusing to be daunted by either poor weather or poor scores. BOTTOMROW: I. Malfitano,C. Muller, J. Gobrect, M. This was just one of the services performed by the group. Later the members sold mints, the proceeds of which went to World Service projects. Hi-Y functions also include social events. Last fall the organization sponsored the highly successful Beatnik Dance as well as parties and hayrides. However, the real purpose of the Hi-Y is to help build high standards and good character throughout the Home, school, and community. The girls have added to their known list of service porjects, such as the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, selling mums on Thanksgiving, and selling mints, and their annual Christmas visit to the orphanage, several lesser known activities which they feel will become an important part of the club. One of them is acting as guides at the Open House for parents during National Education Week. Under the able leadership of President Bar- bara Orvis, the Tri-Hi-Y's goals and ideals have been met and surpassed. Everyone at M-N should be aware of the fine work these girls do for all of us and for our community. 51 A.F.S. plans book list for the new school book store. Ars GROWi; 8V 1H[ V[AR!i A better understanding of other nations in our shrinking world is found where the American Field Service is operating. We had two students from abroad living in our community this year, and two students from here went overseas: one for the summer and one for school. The student com- mittees worked to make sure the program would continue at our school. They raised money, held dances, and did their best to make our exchange students feel at home. 52 Bottom Row: C. NMIOIU HONOR liOCinf The National Honor Society is composed of seniors and juniors who meet the qualifications of scholarship, leadership, character and service. Members are chosen by a faculty board from stu- dents in the top fifth of their class who have pre- viously shown those outstanding qualities. During the year the National Honor Society sponsored a dance, and in the spring held its in- duction of new members. The National Honor Society attempts to pro- mote higher standards of academic achievement and service to the school, while giving everyone an object toward which to work. 53 Hr? ppi nfH 1 ?w 1 c ;i Not since the departure of Marlena Dietrich, has Germany experienced such a setback as they did at the ar- rival of Mitch Weinstein last June. Besides polishing old armor, Mitch toured the Bavarian Alps with three other six-footers in a Volkswagen, Now that Mitch is back at M.N., it is hoped that Germany will be able to recover in due time. nel Eturer is our exchange student from Turkey. A small dark haired rl with an ever present smile, she is one of M.N.'s most welcome addi- )ns. After completing her senior year at Marple- Newton, she plans to udy medicine on her return to Turkey. In her quiet, easy going manner, nel has found her way into the hearts of all M.N. students, and we will ver forget her friendliness and enthusiasm for the American way of life. Following M.N.'s custom of being in on all the world's great events, the high school had a foreign exchange student in Belgium during the riots. However, they're quite common to the mem- bers of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Club, a new activity at M-N this year. Under the guidance of Miss Lewis, in- terested students study and discuss more advanced forms of mathematics, beyond that which is taught in the classroom. The club is a branch of the National Mathematics Club for Senior High and Junior College Students. Its purpose is to create an interest in mathematics, and encourage students to consider a career in that field. i I SEATED: Miss Lewis, A. C lute, S. Godfrey, C. Ellis, G. Jakubowski, M. Metzger, M. While much of the meeting time has been devoted to organization of the club, there have been several interesting programs. One of these was on thermocouples which was presented by Jim Gregory and Sam Wheat- man. Larry Engle and Ann Engleking gave a fascinating demonstration showing changes in the heartbeat of a turtle when solutions were poured over it. Recently, the club voted to become af- filiated with the Future Scientists of America, a national organization of science clubs. LEFT TO RIGHT; H. Olsen, D. Eagles, W. Maule, R. Haylar, T. Jaagus, B. STIIIVIIC FOR VICTORY M-N's Booster Club is the core of community school spirit. The participants are parents of students and alumni who have an interest in the school athletics, and members of the community who want to see more enthusiasm toward M-N's teams, win or lose. Each year the Booster Club is responsible for staging many enjoyable events. Early in the school year they brought the Philadelphia Warriors to M-N, which drew one of the largest crowds ever assembled in our gym. The club also rewards de- serving Senior athletes with blaz- ers and sweaters, and holds a banquet in their honor. Under the expert guidance of Mrs. Egner, a hard-working Conces- sions crew turned out at each home footba ll and basketball game. Even our foreign -exchange student came to lend a helping hand. 62 A member of the newly formed Pep Club can easily be recognized at any games by his gaudy orange feathered hat and his orange and black jacket complete with booster but- ton. He has clutched in his hands a stuffed tiger, shaker, horn, program, blanket and possibly a hot -dog. His arrival is heralded by a long caravan of crepe -paper decorated cars. With trumpet sounding and cries of Let's go M-N! he brightens up the school spirit wherever he goes. How about a little mustard, please? Mike Mulloy gets it straight from the Tiger's mouth. In rain or shine (mostly rain!) M-N's Concessions crew was depended onto feed the hungry spectators. These students worked quickly and efficiently de- spite the overwhelming crowds at halftime. 63 First Row: Coach L. Bonder, P. Le Donne, P. Frazier, L. Kress, D. Murphey, T. Gray, B. Cook, D. Our 1960 gridiron Tigers served as a fine example of the fighting spirit and determination which should underlie all other scholastic and extra curricular activities at Marple Newtown and al l enterprises after graduation. Even the most disheartening losses of the season seemed only to strengthen the team and spur them to greater efforts. The Marple Newtown defensive team, a corps which gave fine performances all year was able to hold the two most powerful teams of our league to two touchdowns apiece. In fact, only once did these players yield more than two touch- downs to any team. Although our scoring ability, due to inexperience of the squad, was poor, our Tigers never lacked spirit, scoring four touchdowns against Harrington. Largely responsible for the fine attitude shown throughout the season is our coaching staff, Mr. Bonder, Head Coach, Mr. Williams, line coach, and Mr. Dobransky and Mr. Rhodes, JV Coaches. Weller Beth, Carol, Pat, Ann, Sue, Sandy, Barbara, and Carol It is a strange thing to suddenly realize that we are no longer seniors and that the years we have spent at Marple- Newtown have passed. We are on our own now--for some of us it means college, for others jobs, for a few, marriage. None of us will ever forget the fun and the work, the people and the places, the excitement of football games and class plays, the beauty of prom night. We are taking all these things with us, but in return we are leaving something of ourselves behind. We only hope that we, who are no longer seniors, can become part of the vast score of memories that are Marple- Newtown. Bonnie Fink Editor, 1961 Memories 148 4
