Memories }iarple-] ewtowH High Zhe Senior Class of 1960 2 3 r 7or Mis Service Zo Us We, the class of 1960, had planned last Fall to dedicate our Memories to our principal, Mr. Herbert E. Rathey, who had guided us with so much wisdom and understanding throughout the wonderful years we had spent at Marple- Newtown. Mr. Rathey passed away on March 15, 1960, but his courage, his untiring service, and his perseverance to go on working for our needs have truly been an inspiration to us. In dedicating this yearbook to the memory of Mr. Rathey, we are only sorry that he is not here to accept our thank you. Its purpose has been to formulate the policies which regulate our school activities. The school board is guided by its president Frank Capotosto, vice president Roy Peterson, treasurer Rowland Smith, secretary Charles Russell. 10 Mr. Stem Says Zke Men behind Us Congratulations members of the class of 1960! To each of you I extend my best wishes for happiness and success. The American poet, Henry David Thoreau, once said, If you have built cas- tles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them. Undoubtedly each of you of the class of 1960 aspires to some goal or has built a castle in the air . If you can remain steadfast in this purpose, if you can per- severe in your efforts, if you are willing to work hard, you have all that is necessary to build a foundation under your castle. WILLIAM F. NYE Principal The school yearbook presents a pictorial record of the activities of a school year. It depicts the total program of the school and identifies the personnel and activities of the most active group in the school, the Senior Class. The work involved in the production of a good school yearbook requires the time and effort of many pupils who are interested and talented in the area of publications. To these people, --the administration, faculty, and pupils of the 1959-60 school term of the Marple-Newtown Senior High School owe a debt of gratitude. In behalf of the school I extend sincere appreciation to the staff mem- bers and the adviser of this yearbook for a fine and useful annual. I join the School Board and the person- nel of the school in urging you to maintain an active interest in the affairs of your school as an alumni member and to seek any ser- vices of the school which may assist you in the achievement of your personal goals. I extend to each of you my best personal wishes for happiness and success in your chosen work and field of service. KERMIT M. STOVER Superintendent Mr. J ye Says Meet the Marple- Newtown Joint Authority. This organization, appointedby the M-N Joint School Board, has a big job but has been given little recognition. These poeple are responsible for the building of the Junior and Senior high schools. They built the addition to the Junior High and will presently begin work on a new Junior High. This organization was appointed because they have more power to raise more funds for schools than the School Board enjoys. The Joint Board enters into the contracts for new buildings and issues bonds to cover the full cost. The School Board then pays yearly rentals until the cost of the bonds and their interest are covered. Benjamin Townsend Jr., Bond Council, John B. H. Donaldson, Authority Solicitor, Edward T. Booster ' s Club Marple-Newtown ' s Boosters support all of our tnterscholastic athletic activities. Their main objective is to increase school spirit. These men and women sponsor the All-Sport banquet in the spring and purchase blazers and sweaters for M-N ' s outstanding and deserving athletes. 13 Zhe Zeachers 7 ace Zke Parents Parents and teachers have many things in common and one of them is a mutual interest in the problems of M-N ' s student body. One of the goals of the PTA is to help solve some of these problems. An excellent job has been done this year at meetings with active discussions and qualified speakers, who answered questions on many pertinent topics such as careers, juvenile delinquency, and our future in space. The first program of the year consisted of an open house evening early in October, during which parents followed the daily schedules of the sons and daughters and spoke with each of their teachers. The PTA has also conducted fund drives in order to raise money for the PTA scholarship, which is presented annually to a deserving senior for the college of his choice. The longest noses in Marple- Newtown belong to the members of the Mar-News staff - noses for news, that is. To realize we ' re only speaking figuratively here, all you have to do is to look at our two pretty co- editors, Dottie Stewart and Jo Anne Snyder. With the untiring guidance of their sponsor, Mrs. Margaret Leister, Dottie and JoAnne and all the other editors and staff members have kept those noses to the grindstone (and ears to the ground) all year to make the Mar-News more sparkling and newsy than ever. 22 ' ’Memories” Is Made of This; Deadlines and dates; headlines and head- aches! But without the advice and stable leadership of Mrs. Marie Nigro, it might have taken the shape of something like an unguided missile. Each year the student body of Marple- Newtown High School elects student council officers, and each home room chooses a person to represent it at the council meetings. These people comprise the student voice in the govern- ment of our school. It is the job of the council to set up a student code of behavior. It is also the responsibility of the council to present student activities awards. This year the student council can boast several new accomplishments. We have them to thank for the very convenient student council store which sells everything from pins to tigers. The Officers: From Left to Right: B. Iwan, Secretary; R. Following the induction of twenty-one new members in September, the club, under the able direction of Mrs. Clarice Jardine, accomplished all of its goals for a very active and successful year. The forty-six girls participated in such activities as selling mints and Easter eggs, giving a Christmas party for the Chester Day Nursery, delivering circulars for the Retarded Children ' s Organ- ization, sponsoring the popular Sadie Hawkins Dance, selling mums on Turkey Day, holding a joint dance with the Hi-Y, and closing the year with the Annual Mother-Daughter Banquet. The officers: President- JoAnne Snyder, Vice President -Roberta Fisher, Treasurer-Cathy Johnson, Recording Secretary-Kathy Nailor, Corresponding Secretary-Betty Lou Naye, Chaplain-Kay Collison, and Sergeant-at- Arms-- Mary Lou Jackson did much to make the club well organized. F. S. Left to Right: S. Peck, K. Nailor, S. Weston, M. McCrumm. The Class of 1960 is largely responsible for the initiation of a foreign exchange program which will expand and improve in the coming years. Our first American Field Serv ice Exchange student was Bjorn Johannessen of Bergen, Norway. For him and for all of us at Marple-Newtown, this has been a year filled with wonderful new experiences. Bjorn arrived August 19, 1959, after crossing the Atlantic with 750 other A. F. S. students. He lived in Newtown Square with the Baer family, who introduced him to all our American activities and customs, and helped him to adjust to his new life. In the course of the year, Bjorn became a real son and brother to his foster family, and a vital part of our class and our school. Who can forget how his trans- lucent blue eyes and quick smile flashed as he passed in the hall? Or his enthusiasm at football games, or the way he gave soccer lessons to the Marple-Newtown boys, and participated in the Senior Play? Perhaps most important of all, Bjorn repeatedly proved to himself and to us that family life and lasting friendships are basically the same everywhere on the globe. In what will probably be the shortest year of his life, Bjorn has helped Marple- Newtown to make an experiment in international living. 33 Honor Society Jnducts 87 Holdover members discuss induction plans. 1st Row: Dotty Stewart, Kathy Nailor, Larry Muroff, Martha McCrumm, Janie Simpson, Carolyn Kidder, Bill Jewett. 2nd Row: Jo Anne Snyder, Dave Rich, Bill Herring, Carolyn Allen, Mr. Nye, Mrs. Levin, Richard Erickson. In the sixteen years since its establishment at Mar pie -Newtown, the National Honor Society has singled out prominent students who have also served their school in extracurricular activities. This year the Society strove to become a functioning organization that would be recognized more than once a year at the induction ceremony. The first officers ever elected by the chapter were: Bill Jewett, President; Kathy Nailor, Vice- President; Dotty Stewart, Secretary; and Carolyn Allen, Treasurer. These four, with the other eight Seniors elected last year, conducted the impressive candlelight ceremony in March, honoring twenty -two Seniors and fifteen Juniors. Con- gratulations are extended to the new members, who should strive to stimulate scholastic achievement among their classmates and the underclassmen. 1st Row: D. Armstrong, M. Auge, C. Baer, B. Zke Zigers Specialize in Upsets This year the Tigers did what people deemed most improbable. Competing in the revised Sec- tion II against strong teams from last year ' s SectionI, they took second place with a record of five wins and one loss. Their only loss in the league was a heart-breaker to powerful Ridley Township. In compiling this record they upset both Haverford and Plymouth- Whitemarsh, and romped in games with Upper Darby and Spring- field, which were predicted to be close. As a climax to this great season, the strong- est of the Tigers were honored: Co- captain Bill Herring received mention on the All Scholastic Second Team, the All- Delco First Team, the All East Delco First Team, and he won the Delaware County scoring championship with his total of 102 points. Co- captain George Atkinson was selected on the All East Delco Second Team. Defensive captain Bob O ' Driscoll received honorable mention on the All Scholastic Team and was selected on the All Delco First Team and the All East Delco First Team. Herring and O ' Driscoll became the first players from Marple-Newtown to receive men- tion on the All Delco First Team. John Keville and Paul Wolfe received honor- able mention on the All Delco Team. Bill McKittrick was selected on the All East Delco First Team. I i I Mr. Davis, Mr. Bonder, Mr. Stahl, Mr. Williams. 50 B. McKittrick leads the way for Mr Williams after Springfield victory. -r. In only four years Marple- Newtown has accomplished what many schools have never been able to do. This year, placing an amaz - ing second at the State Champion- ship Meet, they were declared the Eastern Pennsylvania Champions. In a field of 230 runners, M-N ' s six runners place in the top seven- ty one, with captain Bob Lawson coming in third. At the District Meet at Cobbs Creek the team became the Dis- trict I champs by taking first place by a margin of 75 points. Bob Lawson broke the course record as he won the race Ray Compton, Bill Rich, Ralph Engle, Ron Basener, and Steve Gill finished in that order, all in the top twenty four. Frank Moran broke the J. V. record as he won his race. These two excellent showings climaxed an equally excellent season in which the Harriers were undefeated in eight meets against some of the best teams in the area. In game after game this season, the fighting Tigers proved that hustle and desire can make up for a lack of height and natural skill. As a result of Mr. Williams’ fine coaching, they provided tough competition for almost every team they played. To climax this fine season, Jerry McCloy was placed on the second team, All-East Delco, and captain Ray Compton on the third team. Curtain time 5 minutes The cast gets a last minute briefing from Miss Brubaker on opening night. The M-N stage this winter was visited by that blustering old cynic Sheridan Whiteside, played by Larry Stern, as The Man Who Came To Dinner. As the play opens Whiteside, a noted lecturer and author who is almost equally well-known for his eccentricities, has just fractured his hips on the front steps of the Stanley home in Mesalia, Ohio, where he will now be confined, much against his will, for some length of time. In keeping with the character of the late Alexander Woollcott, after whom he was patterned, Whiteside makes it known when things don ' t go his way . . . with hilarious results. Helping him as he un- consciously turns the Stanley household upside-down are his secretary, Maggie Cutler (Leona Heideck), his nurse. Miss Preen (Barbara Fitch) , and three of White- side ' s extraordinary Hollywood friends, Beverly Carlton (Charlie Baer), Lorraine Sheldon (Beatrice Wein), and Banjo (Bruce Miller). The play was directed by Miss Joyce Brubaker, whose outstanding job had its proof in the audience reaction, the fun had by everyone involved, and the sub- stantial profit made by the senior class.
