Her loss was felt most deeply by those who had known and loved her — fellow teachers and her many students. The impression she left upon their lives is indelible. Miss Yeingst came to Marple-Newtown in 1935, having graduated from Sus- quehanna, Dickinson, and Temple Universities. During her twenty-three years here she served as head of the English Department, guiding light to two decades of Seniors, advisor to the ever-growing Yearbook, and in many other vital capacities. Largely through her untiring efforts Marple-Newtown developed afirst-class college preparatory course. It was she who brought here the Tri-Hi- Y, Scott’s Hi-Q, and the annual Magazine Drive. To the memory of this great lady. Miss Helen E. Yeingst, we of the Senior Class humbly dedicate our Memories of 1959. 4 - 1 { ' Marple - Newtown Sefflot H. S. Ofibiv Newtown Square, Pa. (JIa oiljuvdLA 3 From Marple -Newtown’s humble beginning in this octagonal schoolhouse came the inspiration for bigger and better schools, until in the year 1932 our school became large enough to publish a yearbook. Since then, MEMORIES has grown with each succeeding year. Only during the war years was there any interruption in its publication. We, the staff, are proud to present this, the 25th edition. THE 23 tb ANMVEESARY UR ADMINISTRATION SPEAKS. I extend my congratulations and best wishes to you, the members of the Class of 1959, on the successful completion of cer- tain prescribed courses and curricular offer- ings at Mar pie -Newtown. Your high school graduation is an import- ant event. You will refer to the date of your graduation time and time again as the be- ginning of a new series of events in your life. This new series of events will include college experiences for some of you and work experiences for others. It includes for each of you participation in the events of the com- munity and of the world as a young adult. Your high school preparation of this role terminates with commencement. Now it is up to you to put this preparation to work as you continue your education or enter one of the occupations as a career. I invite you to call on your school for any assistance which we can render in helping you to achieve the goal of your life. My best wishes to each one of you for happiness and success in the endeavor of your choice and in the total area of life activities. KERMIT M. STOVER, Superintendent Young people of this generation, as prob- ably no other generation, have been concerned with and disturbed by a sinister type of thinking. This school of thought would have you believe that the cynical attitude toward personal behavior, the fast buck and the broken law are to be desired. This attitude, and the resultant poor outcomes are the unusual rather than the usual in our school community. Moral values, accepted truths and proper behavior have not changed. Strength of in- dividual character is as necessary and im- portant today as at any time in history. It is probably more prevalent than we realize. Because the small minority who dangerously skirt the moral and civil law is unusual, this fact causes them to become conspicuous. Each of you can make the greatest con- tribution to yourself, your family, your school and your country by developing a steadfast, useful and worthy character. You will have many well-wishers at this graduation who de- sire your success in your chosen occupation or profession. It is my opinion that this will become a meaningful reality through strength of character. Best wishes II H, E. Rathey Principal BEHIND THE Left to Right: S. Hetzel, H, Alwine, M. Rossi, R. Reinhart. P. T. A. The purpose of the Parent-Teachers Association is to bring our parents into the teacher -pupil relationship. The P.T.A. worked unceasingly this year to bring the parents and school into this ever closer bond. By sponsoring an Open House in which parents followed their childrens’ schedule the par- ents and teachers were brought together for their mutual benefit. An Exchange Sale and various other projects supplied moneyfor the annual P.T.A. scho- larship, this grant of $500 being given each year to a deserving Senior. As with the trend of the country as a whole, this year Marple-Newtown has incorporated an advanced academic course into the curricular of our high school. This course offers accelerated subjects to able students. This curricular com- mittee now plans to investigate the present Com- mercial and General courses and propose needed changes. This is only one of the many facets of the P.T.A. activities and we know that the community and our parents are behind us in our various phases of activity at M.N. 6 SCENES Marple-Newtown’s Booster Club has supported our sports activites for many years. They are the hard-working people who sponsor the All-Sports banquet in the spring of each year and who purchase blazers and sweaters for the athletes who qualify for them. To raise money this year they sold booster buttons and sponsored the first dance of the year, the fourth annual Tiger Trot, which was held in September in the high school gymnasium. The M-N Booster Club is an organization which promotes school spirit at our interscholastic games. Let’s get behind them and BOOST M-N’S BOOSTERS! SENIOR ADVISORS We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to our Senior Advisors for the guidance they have given to us throughout this year. Behind every Senior activity was one of these selfless teachers. Special thanks should go to Mrs. Egner for her tireless work with Concessions and the Senior Breakfast. “Kingpin” of the Christmas Card Drive, Mr. George, deserves special mention too. It was he who kept the orders and accounts straight, and the class in the black. Mr. Dimmick, who handled the multiplicity of details concerning the Prom, was in no small way responsible for the success of that event. In conclusion, we want to re-express our gratitude for their efforts and say THANKS! TRI-HI-Y The Tri-Hi-Y is a long-standing girls’ organization which proves that serving others can be fun. This year, after initiating 22 members, the club raised funds for their service projects by selling Mums at the Thanks- giving Game and sponsoring the Sadie Hawkins’ Dance. During the Yule season they treated the children at the Chester Day Nursery to a Christmas Party featuring games, refreshments, and gifts. In the spring the girls sold Easter eggs and candy, and culminated a busy year with their always-popular Mother- Daughter Banquet. Tri-Hi-Y officers were: President, Ann Ortlip; Vice Pres- ident, Dale DePova; Corresponding Secretary, Jeanene Bricker; Recording Secretary, Kathy Nailor; Treasurer, Janet Nussle; Chaplain, Priss Pellanda; Sergeant at Arms, Gwen Kay. 64 Mrs. C. Hl-Y One of M— N’s service organizations, the Hi-Y, had a very eventful year. Among the many activities under- taken by the club were the selling of $40 worth of mints for world service and the sharing in organization of the Sweetheart dance. The year was climaxed with the presentation of a gift to the school by the officers on behalf of the club. When this picture was taken it was early in the season, and they didn’t even have their uniforms. Every- one is waiting enthusiastically to give their best wishes for the coming season. With the help of the coach, Mrs. Stanley, and the captains, Arleen Walton and Gwen Kay, we can be sure that they will lead our team to a record that any school would be proud of. TRACK During the Spring of 1958 MNHS formed for the first time in its history a track team. Although considered a minor sport, the sup- port for this activity was overwhelming. The record was terrific, and this year, for the first year in league competition, prospects are for another wonderful season. EARLY BIRDS 1st row: S. Wertheimer, N. Palculich, L. Hanley, J. Paarz, K. I I 87 BASEBALL Although it was early in the baseball season when the yearbook went to press, the prospects for the team’s record was terrific. In the 1958 season the team came out with a great record resulting in the awards of championship jackets. This year many that were on the winning team are back for more. With all the new faces and techniques we are sure that the team will have another great season. HARD Head Coach Lou Bonder GRIND 1st row; W. Jewett, P. Angstadt, L. Muroff, L. Speca, J. Morman, S.
