■11 ! WKf ' ' }|i tJF - ' • ■ X9|ujL i;. : H 1 1 [Bi 1 7o 7kc ClMH ot 1957: Last April a disastrous fire brought to an end the career of the original portion of the Marple -New- town High School building. Oddly enough this disaster took place at the time when one era of our high school ' s life was closing and a new one begin- ning. The period which was characterized by smallness had ended and opening up ahead was a time which will see a uemendous growth in our educational facilities. For reasons of sentiment many of us mourned the loss of the old structure which had been the edu- cational home for many years of the boys and girls of Marple and Newtown townships. People cannot lightly toss aside affection for the school in which they spent their youthful years, but reason clearly shows that the old building was no longer capable of furnishing an efficient housing for a modern and efficient type of education. Now we see a new and modem structure rising on the site of the old one and being constructed to meet the modern ideal of educational efficiency. We shall never lose our affection for that which has passed on, but, at the same time, let us rejoice at what the future promises and keep in mind that this new building, rising out of the ashes of the old, promises larger and better educational opportunities for the young people of Marple and Newtown town- Jay W, Worrall Supervising Principal Marietta P. Maguire Altoona High School Secretary You ' ll have to have an excuse. Mrs. Edna G. Dougherty Marple-Newton High School Secretary First, I must get out the notices.

Uhe Ylew Cmenqea, nont the Old The Marple-Newton Joint School Board suffered a severe blow on the afternoon of April 9, 1956, when fire destroyed fourteen classrooms and other facilities of the high school . Class space for the remainder of the school year became available through the neighborly assistance of Haverford Township School Board, which permitted many classes to occupy the building which had been vacated a few days before the fire. Double sessions this school term have caused inconveniences, but no other solution was possible, and it is felt that pupils are not being denied any vital aspects of high school education. Hopes are high that September, 1957, will see the completion of the section under construction to replace the burned-out portion of the high school and at least some portion of the new senior high school — space that will put an end to double sessions. Next year ' s students should function in two modern buildings, the junior and senior schools, each with its ample gymnasium and locker facilities, spacious auditoriums and cafeterias and classrooms adequately equipped . 5 r i 1 18
