Mothers of the class officers poured: Mrs. Thomas Sherrard, Mrs. Delmar Haney, Mrs. Lloyd Wilkinson, and Mrs. Seth Pancoast. With one hundred and twenty-five members, the band, under Mr. J, Doran, added much to the spirit and splendor of the football games. In the fall they marched in the Halloween Parade at Chester, and in the winter they gave an exhibition at a Warriors ' game at Convention Hall. Rafael Mendez, along with the band, entertained the school with a concert that will long be remembered. Although many band members will be graduating this spring, it is certain that next year ' s band will uphold this year ' s fine record . r f ' J ' 1 f f i Baseball Capt. , Bob Hughes Cheerleading Captains; Gail Rice and Kathy Manges Band Captain, Martin Buehler d-M i Mar- News Editor, Carla Rice Yearbook Editors; Don Iffland and Deborah Milton Majorette Captain, Barbara Stewart Junior High Cheer- leading Captain, Sue Wright Senior Class President, Pete Sherrard Hockey Captain Nancy Krombolz Cross-Country Captains; Harry Eberwein and Pete Adams Junior High Football Capt, Bill Jewett icrosse Captain net Maule Color Guard Captain B. Fee was not present when the picture was taken.) Uhe Ylew Cmenqea, nont the Old The Marple-Newton Joint School Board suffered a severe blow on the afternoon of April 9, 1956, when fire destroyed fourteen classrooms and other facilities of the high school . Class space for the remainder of the school year became available through the neighborly assistance of Haverford Township School Board, which permitted many classes to occupy the building which had been vacated a few days before the fire. Double sessions this school term have caused inconveniences, but no other solution was possible, and it is felt that pupils are not being denied any vital aspects of high school education. Hopes are high that September, 1957, will see the completion of the section under construction to replace the burned-out portion of the high school and at least some portion of the new senior high school — space that will put an end to double sessions. Next year ' s students should function in two modern buildings, the junior and senior schools, each with its ample gymnasium and locker facilities, spacious auditoriums and cafeterias and classrooms adequately equipped . 5 r i 1 18 ■11 ! WKf ' ' }|i tJF - ' • ■ X9|ujL i;. : H 1 1 [Bi 1 7o 7kc ClMH ot 1957: Last April a disastrous fire brought to an end the career of the original portion of the Marple -New- town High School building. Oddly enough this disaster took place at the time when one era of our high school ' s life was closing and a new one begin- ning. The period which was characterized by smallness had ended and opening up ahead was a time which will see a uemendous growth in our educational facilities. For reasons of sentiment many of us mourned the loss of the old structure which had been the edu- cational home for many years of the boys and girls of Marple and Newtown townships. People cannot lightly toss aside affection for the school in which they spent their youthful years, but reason clearly shows that the old building was no longer capable of furnishing an efficient housing for a modern and efficient type of education. Now we see a new and modem structure rising on the site of the old one and being constructed to meet the modern ideal of educational efficiency. We shall never lose our affection for that which has passed on, but, at the same time, let us rejoice at what the future promises and keep in mind that this new building, rising out of the ashes of the old, promises larger and better educational opportunities for the young people of Marple and Newtown town- Jay W, Worrall Supervising Principal Marietta P. Leadership, scholarship, service, and character — these four qualifications are necessary for a student to be selected to the National Honor Society anywhere in the United States. Here, at Marple-Newtown, ten per cent of the senior class and _ five per cent of the junior class are eligible. Late in March, in an impressive i 4 candlelight service, the following students were honored: R -.-i SENIORS Richard Gillmor Rachel Hahn Evelyn Haney Nina Hunsicker Ruth Longacre Nancy Wertz Kathleen Manges Gail Rice Donald Senges Peter Sherrard Dale Stewart 46 JUNIORS Richard Diemer David Duncan Donald Fuller Sylvia Hayre Eve Niederdrenk Judith Nelson John Scott Borbara Stewart Ronald Suny Lynne, Angus, Barbara, and Sue try out a record for the next canteen. What ' s this week ' s choice? Will it be Too Much or Young Love ? Honor to whom honor is due - our boys and girls of the month: L. Hahn, A. Shupard, L. Suny, R. Mendelzon, R. Longacre, J. rniaa Miss Yeingst was more than our teacher; her guidance and willingness to listen to our problems gave us what we needed most - friendship. Her jokes sparked our class periods and made us laugh together rather than at each other. As advisor for the Scott ' s Hi-Q team and the Yearbook Staff, she wielded a firm but understanding hand. In our senior class meetings, she gave us advice but never forced it on us, because she realized that one learns by experience. Whenever a helping hand was needed at the concession stand. Miss Yeingst was there, ready and willing. Mr. Harvey has been a jack of all trades and master of all to our class. He has been our manager, organizer, financial advisor, and a helping hand. His invaluable assistance and expert help guided us through many problems and rough spots in our school life. Beside arranging our junior and senior trips to New York and Washington D.C. , he organized the concessions at the home games. It was at his suggestion that the class bought two coke machines for the school. Mr. Harvey collected all the senior funds, counted them, and deposited them. He has done so many favors for the class that we can ' t begin to list them. It is to you. Miss Yeingst and Mr. Harvey, that we would like to express our appreciation and say thanks. Cfood Citizenship. . . The Hi-Y this year has been very succes sful in all of its activities. To the best of their abilities, the fellows have practiced good citizenship, have been a service to the school, and have enjoyed good fellowship. Many a pleasant night has been spent at the home of one of their mem- bers listening to informative and interesting speakers. The club had as its advisor Mr. Thomas Jardine and for its officers: Bill Stewart, president; Al Capotosto, vice-president; Bud Arnett, chaplain; Ed Dowden, treasurer; and Marty Buehler, secretary. 74 L Qood Jellowihip and Jun The Tri-Hi-Y a club whose purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian Character, was composed this year of forty-two senior high girls. After initiating twenty new members and holding a lovely induction service, the Tri- Hi-Y decided to sell chrysanthemums for the Thank sgiving Day game. Everyone had loads of fun at the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance given by the club on November 17. AtChristmas time all of the girls felt the true spirit of Christmas, when they gave a party for the orphans at the Chester Day Nursery. Always a looked -forward to event, the Mother-Daughter Banquet this year was enjoyed by everyone . With the willing help of our advisors: Miss H. Yeingst and Mrs. C. Jardine, and the able leadership of Sue Mahan, president; Carla Rice, vice-president; Nancy Krombolz, recording secretary; Lynn Biborosch, corresponding secretary; Marilyn Bross, treasurer; Joyce Hall, chaplain, and Ruth Whitehead, sergeant-at-arms, the club had a most successful year. Although losing the hard fought Darby game, the Tigers came back winning their first league game with Yeadon. The fighting Eleven lost to the experienced Lansdowne- Aldan team and played nip and tuck games with Radnor and Nether Providence, both ending In ties. After winning a close game with Media, the Bondermen slowed the league champions, Swarthmore. After defeating Upper Merlon by a wide margin, the Tigers were bagged down by Springfield, our traditional rivals. The favorite passing combination was quarterback Buddy Young and Bob Hughes. Co- Captaln Bill Scott was the regular punter. Co-CaptaIn Dick Fraser made the honorable mention list on the All-Delco and first string tackle on the East All Delco team together with Buddy Young as the third string quarterback. Honorable mention on the All East Delco team were Bill Scott, “Tex Chambers, Duke Snyder, Carl Thruston, and Joe Dornhiem.
