upei vLdin Principats Wj e One of the outstanding characteristics of life in America is the opportunity of- fered the individual to make a fresh start after fate has treated him roughly and he feels that his personal affairs are in a pretty sorry condition. This chanceof making a new beginning has been described in various terms by different organizations. We hear a great political party talking about the New Deal, and a prominent re- ligious organization using the slogan - A man may be down but he is never out. Such ideas are, without doubt, very encouraging and have been an incentive to many unfortunate individuals to put their shoulder to the wheel and do something about it. But keep in mind that the person who does not need to make a new beginning is in the preferred position. He is the type that in school takes advantage of all its opportunities for self-improvement. He is the pupil who, even though he might be compelled to join the armed forces, will nevertheless keep on making his best ef- forts regardless of what the future holds. Remember that making a fresh start very often is analogous to taking the wrong fork of a road. In order to get on the right roadit is necessary to come all the way back to the fork before resuming the journey. This involves a tremendous loss in time and effort. And so, let us go about our work in such a way that we will endeavor to make our first effort a success, holding in the background the alternative that ifwe do not succeed at first, we will put everything we possess into trying to come out on top the next time. Jay W. Worrall, Supervising Principal 14
