DEAR MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, We of the ' 53 wish to express our appreciation to you, the hard-working group who run our schools . During our years at Marple Newtown we have seen the building grow. We have enjoyed the new wing that was the result of your thoughtful plan- ning, the freshly-painted gym, the cold-water fountains, and the new-look of paint and modern light fixtures in the halls. To you, who have planned with our needs in mind, go our sincere thanks. Sincerely, THE CLASS OF 1953 SEATED CLOCKWISE; N. Bogardus, J. Allen, S. Nicholl, D. McClune, E. Coan, D. Wardle, B. This chanceof making a new beginning has been described in various terms by different organizations. We hear a great political party talking about the New Deal, and a prominent re- ligious organization using the slogan - A man may be down but he is never out. Such ideas are, without doubt, very encouraging and have been an incentive to many unfortunate individuals to put their shoulder to the wheel and do something about it. But keep in mind that the person who does not need to make a new beginning is in the preferred position. He is the type that in school takes advantage of all its opportunities for self-improvement. He is the pupil who, even though he might be compelled to join the armed forces, will nevertheless keep on making his best ef- forts regardless of what the future holds. Remember that making a fresh start very often is analogous to taking the wrong fork of a road. In order to get on the right roadit is necessary to come all the way back to the fork before resuming the journey. This involves a tremendous loss in time and effort. And so, let us go about our work in such a way that we will endeavor to make our first effort a success, holding in the background the alternative that ifwe do not succeed at first, we will put everything we possess into trying to come out on top the next time. This year the Council, under its revised constitution, has been studying the pos- sibility of organizing a student court. To do this, they placed in the hands of the students, a questionnaire concerning the types of cases to be tried, how many re- presentatives will be on the jury, and how these representatives will be chosen. One of the other actions of theStudent Council has been the issuing of awards for extra-curricular activities. A vote of thanks should go to these, our representatives in the administration of our school, and we should give them even more support than we have in the past. SITTING: P. Dawn, J. Gausch, L. Eve Coan and Betty Hormann representing the paper at the Pennsylvania School Press Association Convention in Altoona, brought back ideas about ways of improving the paper, and some of these ideas are being used. The newly formed Mar News Club, which meets in the regular school club period, has helped underclassmen to learn how to edit a school newspaper . A swimming party at West Chester was the last activity of the year. 59 LIBRARY ASSISTANTS CLUB Energetic girls of the Library Club are found working in the library in their free time helping Miss Sachse, their new sponsor. A few of the many duties of these girls are pre- paringnew books and pamphlets, keeping the shelves in order, and making colorful bull- etin board displays. CHESS, CHECKERS, DARTS Members of the club, after learning the rules of the games in the beginning of the year, competed with each other to determine the champion player of each activity at the end of the year. AVIATION Mr. Watson ' s eager young men studied, during the year, the types of airplanes and fly- ing techniques used by military and civilian pilots. Also, they did some work with model airplanes. FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB M.N. ' s future teachers at their meetings discussed the opportunities, the history, and the program of the organized teaching profession. The purpose of this club is to interest the girls and boys in education as a lifelong career. DEBATING Resolved In order to train M.N. ' s debating teams for future years and give the pres- ent team members practice the debating club was formed. During club periods they have practice debates and discuss the topic of debate for the current season. SPORTS INFORMATION Sports fans of the junior high school broaden their-knowledge of sports through this club. They study the rules of current sports and make predictions about scores and champions. ART M.N. ' s artists have devoted their club periods this year to transferring Pennsylvania Dutch designs to small wooden boxes and table mats. Spring brought a new activity which was outdoor sketching. HOUSEHOLD MECHANICS Eighteen girls were kept busy learning the skills of handling household emergencies such as blown fuses and faulty electric plugs by their director, Mr. Guth. Another project completed during the year was a wooden door stop. CHEF CLUB Hml Something smells good) Young chefs each club period learned how to cook some- thing new, and, best of all, had a feast afterwards. MAJORETTES The high steppers in the majorette club spent many hours of practice preparing to lead M.N. ' s coming marching band. To earn money for uniforms the majorettes gave a dance in the spring. interests HOBBY MODELS CLUB Boys interested in model making have constructed models of airplanes, ships, trains, and automobiles. Several times during the year these models were displayed in the shop show case. PROJECTOR CLUB The growing use of visual education in our school kept the projector club boys busy. Among the machines they learned to work are the movie projector, tape recorder, loud speaking system, and the film strip projector. GYM CLUB Mr. Pittman ' s athletes devoted most of their time to learning the skills and rules of basketball. Many half-count games of basketball in this club provided extra practice time for team members. SCIENCE To develop and foster the pupils’ interest in science and to provide a means for pupils to work on projects were the main goals of the science club. Any odd odors or loud noises may have originated from the science lab. on club days. GARDEN AND NATURE STUDY Under the leadership of Mr. Rathey, the members of the Garden club have had speakers and have learned many things about horticulture . DANCING To have fun and learn the social graces, join the dancing club. Here was a wise motto for junior high students this year. The dancing club members learned modern dancing in all its phases from their instructor. Miss Baldwin. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The newly formed photography club has discussed types of cameras and photography to broaden their knowledge of their hobby. One of their activites was developing film. SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE Anytime bleachers had to be moved or repair work done, Mr. Harvey ' s boys were call- ed upon. Many thanks go out to them for their assistance. JUNIOR CHORUS Members of the junior choms enjoyed singing a variety of songs at their meetings. In the spring of the year the junior chorus was featured in the spring concert. But our most satisfying triumph came on Thanksgiving Day when we edged Springfield 13-7 in the final minutes of the game. It was the first time since 1945 that we had defeated our annual rivals. Much of oursuccess can begiven to the coaches, William Nyeand William DeCampli . With a Whoo rah, Baldwin, whoo rah, McKaig, our hockey team charged on to the field to win a terrific victory over Haverford by a score of 2-1 . Next came Nether Provi- dence which we tied in a hard-fought game with a score of 1-1 . Then as the Aspergum ran out, so did our victories; but the girls never lost theirspirit. They continued to fight hard for the rest of the season but never quite came up on top. Seniors lost through graduation are Patti McDonald, Marie Battista, Diane MacLaughlin, Judy Parks, Pat Lamb, Betty Berry, Nancy Bogardus, Dot Wardle, Carol Cronk, Ruth Burton, and Sbirley Dulaney. We give three cheers for the J. V. who should really make a terrific varsity next year. These spirited girls, with Debbie Wallace as their captain, cheered at all home junior high sport contests and at occasional away games. JU Vou, 80 Wore Ee ounce Do DL O, unce Give ' em blood and give ' em thunder! This is only one of the cheers that Pat and her peppy squad used to inspire the teams to victory and boost the morale when the going got tough. The cheerleaders were generously given new uniforms. It certainly knocked your eyes out to see the girls in their snow white sweaters and black pleated skirts. Their thanks go to the organizations and individuals who made these new outfits possible. Many thanks are extended to Miss Claire Baldwin for her many hours of work with the cheer- leading clinic. It taught them good sportsmanship. Even though we lose three cheerleaders by graduation, we feel that next year ' s squad will continue to keep up the good work and cheer our teams to more victories. J. Parks, L. Robertson, E.
