A friend to whom you can turn is always a valuable asset. and we are fortunate enough to have two of them who have been advisors, leaders. and confidants of all the class in all things. It has been largely through their efforts that we have been able to bring our years at Marple-New- town to a successful, happy close. All those who know them will heartily agree that no finer friends can be found. To them, Helen E. Yeingst and Harry R. Harvey, we dedicate this yearbook with our sincerest admiration and gratitude. me jeff?-Aix Wemor1eJ 'rx HELEN E. YEINGST HARRY R. HARVEY Seven Warpd- Wewfown zgzchoof i Left to Right: J. Worrall, F. Board nf Directors Behind the scenes of school life stands a very important group of men who have laid the plans for our education. They meet the first Tuesday of every month to work out scores of school problems with an understanding interest in the youth of our school and their needs. Officers of the Marple-Newtown Joint Board are as follows: President, William Culbertson, Secretary, Wilmer F. Loomis, Treasurer, Charles H. Rus- sellg Vice-President, W. Foster Reeve III. Eight we jorfg-Aix Wemoried Principal and His essaqe To THE CLASS or 1946: In ohserving the growth of educational practice in the United States, one clearly perceives how much lrroader is the appeal of the school to the youth of AlllCI'iC3 today than was the case of the schools in the seventeenth century. This growth is due partly to an increased offering of eourses such as art, music. cooking, sewing, bookkeeping, shop, etc., and also to activities such as cluhs. athletic teams, guidance periods, school papers, student councils, etc. As a result of this widening of the educational offering. lroys and girls have hcen encouraged to remain in school and receive a type of education which more closely mccts their own peculiar educational needs. You who graduate this year have lieen fortunate to receive this type of education and have profited accordingly . iVlay you go forth from Nlarple-Newtown High School filled with a strong desire to use the fruits of this hroadened education in the service of your fellow- man. This year's Junior Class was very successful in many activities. By picking out and waiting enthusiastically for our class rings, we carried on an old tra- dition of Marple-Newtown. Following this big event we pllt our best efforts into the annual Magazine Drive which produced a very nice profit of 3450 for the Junior Class. We owe the success of this drive to such people as Ruth Gettz and Charley Scheid, who handled the drive very capably. Other popular events such as the Junior Prom. home-room discussions, and planning of assembly programs all added much to our Junior year. These ac- tivities have taught us the value of cooperation and hard work. With the cap- able advice of Miss Yeingst and Miss D'Amelio. we finished a very enjoyable Junior year. At the first Septemhcr meeting, the Sophs elected their class officers and immediately resolved to improve upon the many accomplishments of last year. Everyone is proud of the record numher of Sophomore hoys and girls who have participated on the various athletic teams, helping to make this an outstanding sports year for Nl. N. Who can forget the hig 'iHop held on March 22? The Sophomore Hop. this year. was the first ever held at night and proved a howling social as well as financial success. Joe Grady, radio commentator on the 950 Cluh. was guest of the evening. The Sophomores also were instrumental in sponsoring a quarter-hour pro- gram on Station XVPEN dedicated to Marple-Newtown. Many of the class mem- hers spoke hriefly on this radio program. Several of the class of 194-8, who are studying French. adopted a little French girl as part of their contribution to help the suffering and starving of Europe. Clothing and food are sent to little Vivianc every two weeks. All are looking forward to the Junior year when they hope to carry on and improve past activities. Both boys and girls have supported the Junior Varsity and Junior High teams. It is therefore only reasonable to assume that there is mueh valuable material available for the Senior High teams. The sales of bonds and stamps did not reach the expected volume until our class formed teams. The stimulation caused by competition promoted sueh an increase of sales that our class headed the list for the greater part of the year. The plans which had been so carefully laid for our Christmas party could not materialize because school closed early. Better luck is expected next year. Although the year has been a busy one, it was also a very happy one. Xve believe we are well prepared to accept the responsibilities of Senior High and and are looking forward with much interest to these years ahead. Forty-three Wurpk Wewfozun Schoo! During the year we welcomed several new eighth graders into our classes. These included Mason Linn from Rouzerville, Raymond di Bono from Shoe- maker Jr. High in Philadelphia, Lee Holloway of Lower Merion. Grace Blair from Upper Darby, and Coy Wyatte of North Carolina. Our junior high teams in footllall and llaskethall were coached hy Mr. Raf- fensperger. We have had a great deal of fun in our sports and intramurals. During the 1946 Athletic Fund Drive many of the collectors were ambitious eighth-graders. Some of our students also have taken part in the orchestra, as cheerleaders, and in the other school activities. We are all looking forward to next year when we shall have advanced to the ninth grade. Joyce Worrell won second place in the seventh grade. The girls played two games with Sandy Bank, one hockey, one basketball. We won both of these but lost the intramural basketball game with the eighth grade. The Seventh grade boys took part only in the intramural basketball games with the eighth grade. Varsit Fnnthall The 1945 season was one of the most unusual seasons in the history of Marple- Newtown. We won the first three games against North Coventry, Wvest Pottsgrove, and Yeadon. The next two games were close, but we lost by only one touchdown to Spring City and were beaten hard by Sharon Hill. Our next garlic was a win from Nether-Providence. The Thanksgiving Day game, our last game, resulted in a tie with Springfield. Wost of the success of our team was due to the good coaching of Mr. Harvey and iVlr. Richute. Mr. Ralfensperger, the Jay-vee coach, did a swell job by pulling the Jay-vees through to a one hundred per cent victory for the year. Credit should be given to the sub- stitutes, who carrie through in the hour of need, for their splendid spirit. The lettermen who have received letters and gold footballs from the Marple-Newtown Athletic Club are as follows: Civitella, David- son, Miller, Heinzelmann, Bachtler, Loomis. Trost, Seely, Satterthwaite, Smith, lVIoycr', Spiller 1lVlgr.l, and Hipple lwlgrfl. Sixty The boys who received numerals and sil- ver footballs from the Marple-Newtown Ath- letic Club were as follows: Peters, Thomas. Prichard, Scheid, Snelling, Knapp, Goodman, H. Gorman, Bishop, Lutz. Thomas, Fetzer, Roberts, Schohcld, Rainey, Rambo, E. Gor- man, and Goodman 1Mgr.I. The Marple-Newtown Athletic Club gave a banquet in honor of the team of 1945 in December. The footballs were given out then. We can boast that we had the best team in ten years.
