Maroa Vice Attack of the woolly worms!!! Anybody seen our Harleys? Life is a collage of colors, sounds, textures, ideas and memories. Each of us is unique and adds his own person- ality to every situation. In doing so we blend with others. We learn. We change. We grow. Discovering ourselves, we see the similarities which make us one, More importantly, we begin to understand that each of us contributes even more when he develops his own skills. As Teresa Tribbett so succinctly puts it, “Shades of dif- ference make the whole.” Come explore the Shades of ’88. Under the direction of Mr. Mueller, the marching band re- ceived second runner up at the East- ern Illinois marching band festival and the concert band received first place rating in the IHSA state con- test. The chorus had a great year starting with over ten members being selected for districts including seniors Chad Schleder, Skip Weikle, Chad Johnson and Annette McLelland. Later thir- teen students made the honor choir in the Macon County Choral Festival. Maroa also achieved four firsts at solo and ensemble contest. Skip Weikle and Annette McClelland won for their solos. Skip combined with Shel- ley Richardson and Julie Church with Heidi Black for first place duets. In the same month the chorus and swing choir traveled to Monticello for a contest, both receiving firsts. Winding up the year, the chorus pre- sented the annual spring concert with a play focused on the pressure of sub- stance abuse and teen’s relationships with their parents. A jazzy quintet Band and Chorus 67 Michelle takes a dip. There were forty new members this year to boost membership to eighty- two, and for the first time ever, there were eleven males in FHA. Some of the activities put on by FHA were a wiener roast, a hay ride, the fall section rally, the lip-syne contest, the Sweetheart dance, a spring trip to Chicago, and participation in the state rally. A familiar FHA smile Amy Agee was the section 4-C presi- dent, and Becky Swinger was the sec- tion 4-C secretary. We began a student store where students and faculty can purchase paper, pens, pencils, folders, notecards, and computer disks. We also helped the school district pur- chase a new overhead projector for teacher use. During National Library Week the Library Club distributed folders to all teachers and administra- tion containing supplies to remind them of their library. The members include Alice Runyen, Karen Todd, Laura Tynan, Michelle Meier, Cindy Crabill, Rana King, Scott Miller, and Beth Barringer. ART CLUB Art Club provides its members with extra time to work on class projects. The students often help set up display cases. Members participate in activi- ties dealing with art, such as Win, Lose, or Draw. A taste of art history is displayed through films. Art careers are explored. Personal portfolios are formed as preparation for college. Library Art 75 National Honor Society The National Honor Society is an hour unlike most others. The varsity squad received first place in the varsity division, as well as re- ceiving the best routine award, squad unity award and the super squad award. JV squad received first place in the JV division, as well as receiving a squad unity award and the super squad award. Both the JV and varsity squads, therefore, qualified for the championship division at DCA’s na- tional competition in Honolulu. The cheerleaders with the help of their parents and the community, were able to raise fourteen-thousand dollars for the trip. In December both squads competed in the national com- petition. The varsity squad received fourth place in their division and were also awarded a trophy for their out- standing leadership. The JV squad re- ceived a trophy for their outstanding jumps. The trip was a great learning experience for the cheerleaders and was enjoyed by all of them. The cheerleaders cheered for and supported the Trojan football team, boys basketball team and girls bas- ketball team. Their performance demonstrated new and impressive cheers, mounts and stunts. 90 Cheerleaders Winning form “You say blue, we say gold!” Varsity squad: Stephanie, Amy, Kari, Shannon, Nikki, Meg Bringing home the gold. Returning from a dismal season 4-5 of the year before, the Trojan team was looking forward to a new start. They opened their season against the Argenta-Oreana Bombers. Maroa suffered its only loss in the regular season games, 17-0. By Homecoming Macon needed a win to stay alive in the conference, and the Trojans needed a win to stay in competition with Assumption for Meridian Conference Champs. When the dust cleared on the much disputed game, Maroa emerged the winner, 6- 0. The Trojans kept moving, beating Assumption, Niantic and finally Bethany in their last regular season game. CRUNCH! With a third undefeated Meridian Conference Championship in four years, Maroa got a chance to avenge their only loss of the season when faced with Argenta in the first round of the IHSA State Playoffs, On a fourth down play Argenta bolted, scoring the only points of the gamed and handing Maroa its last loss of the year. The JV team, hampered by inexperi- ence and minimal manning, ended their season 3-6 with victories over the Warrensburg Cardinals and the Lovington Panthers.
