It is true that Mr. Walter Query worked right beside his wife as we swept the cafeteria floor, following the many basketball games at which we sold pop corn and drinks; sponsored sock hops, chaperoned junior-senior proms, sold tickets to ball games, painted the class room walls, drove us to the Ozarks for senior trips, and even went to Europe three different times with students from M.F.H.S. Therefore, it is fitting that the Class of 1979 says, Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Query, for the many extra hours of time, energy, and love devoted to our community and school. 6 PAMELA SUE ALEXANDER Alex” Combines brains and fun does she; that’s the way one ought to be.” Band 1, 2; Honor Band 1; Class Sec. 3. Davis. 31 Space Odyssey 2004 It is the year 2004, 25 long years since our graduation date of 1979. A few of our old class mates got together and decided to hold a class reunion on the planet Mars. We had never found time to have one before, and we were all anticipating hearing from everyone. Since technology had advanced and interplanetary travel was easy, all of our old class members were scat¬ tered all over this universe. It was up to the four of us: PAUL COCHRAN, KEITH CULLISON, KIM KOEHLER, and PATTY WEYEN, to get them all together. Our jet propelled space shuttle took us to cloud 9 where we found DEAN JOHNSON, MIKE JANETZKY, JIM EDGETTT, and TIM YOUNKER having a tea party. We told them abo ut the upcoming reunion and they told us that TIM MORRIS was a roach exterminator on the moons of Jupiter. When we found him on the fourth moon, he was using the famous method of smoking the roaches out of RENEA PARKER’S house. Renea is married to a successful purple Jupitorian. She has five curly headed purple Jup kids. As we talked with Renea, she told us that BRENDA ZOMBRO was now living on Jupiter, too, with her husband. We went to her Galaxy-home to tell her about the reunion and we found her teaching piano. Her prized pupil is the ancestor of Beetho¬ ven. When we stopped for fuel, we picked up a magazine and found that ANGIE GRISSOM is now a famous gossip columnist. She writes a three page article every week for the universal magazine, f, Gift of Gab”. We read in her latest article that Private DENYSE HASTINGS ran off with the General ' s son to some unknown part of the galaxy. After 25 years in the Army, you would think that Denyse would be smart enough not to fool around with General BRENDA STREET’S son. LARRY DAVIS and RUSTY NEWLIN, an ex-cre am-a-donna,” now own an interplanetary air service. Larry runs his own stewardess training school. STACY W HITEHEAD has finally graduated after 10 years under his teaching. She is now Rusty’s personal stewardess. We made our way to the planet Pluto and found KATHLEEN BOND and TERRY TEEL busy raising Longhorn R2-D2 ' s on their Plutonian ranch. Their next door neighbor was GLORY YUNDT; yes, she took over her father’s occupation, but in a shorter perspective. A couple of miles down the road, we ran into KYLE HOEEMAN, who was busy herding his 50,000 sheep to pasture. We went into the big city of Centura and were amazed to see KAY GRIEEIN a leader of the famed cult group, the Tittyka- kas. KIMBRA BURRIS is her chief recruiter of young members. CATHY CRAIG was also there with her cult — the Giddy- gurus. It seems there was a huge cult seminar going on. Before we left, Patty decided to have her hair fixed, and was she surprised to find DAN MONTGOMERY as owner of Danny’s Solar Salon. As we left, we stopped to pick up two hitc hhikers and were surprised to find that they were PAM ALEXANDER and CINDY HOWLAND. They told us that they couldn’t make it to the reunion because they were headed for the cult seminar. We found out they had left their jobs as an accountant and dental hygenist. We then zoomed on down to Earth in Holly wood where we met KIM ARMSTRONG. She told us she was a famous movie star, but as we left, she gave each of us 10 cards with her name, address, and telephone numer on them. Give them to anyone you see”, she pleaded. While we were there we also saw that BETH WESTERMAN had made it big on the stage. She was in the 16th remake of Little Women. We stopped in at Dunham’s Detective agency and found CURT DUNHAM, famed private eye, working on his toughest case ' s — RANDY RUNYEN, a well-known criminal who steals toys from babies and is called Ranie Runnin, and GARY UNDERWOOD, who tatooed a ship on his stomach and insists on making everyone seasick. We met SHARON VEACH on the street. She’s still try ing to make it into journalism school. we went to Decatur, Illinois, and found SHELLY BOYS, who is now Mrs. Kreckle. She married her boss and is now half- owner of Kreckle’s Kustard. We zoomed to the planet Neptune whe re we me t CATHY VEACH. After she graduated from high school she became the world’s first woman astronaut. W ; e saw CATHY COWELL and her husband James. They were celebrating their 25th anniversary. They have 15 children and 32 grandchildren — all girls! In the same apartment building, we saw JEANNE CHANDLER who is now Mrs. Stukins. Be th told us that JERRY PECK was the most highly acclaimed Playboy” in the outer galaxy. MARSHA SHOEMAKER, his favorite play mate, re affirme d this. We left Neptune only to run into CHRIS McCOY. He’s still in the back seat of his starduster. In our Space Shuttle we tune d in e n Saturday Morning earte e ns to find that GARY POSZICH is now the cartoonist for the new show, Captain Cave¬ man. We finally arrived at the class of ’79 reunion. Be fore hand, we told PAM PENWELL to rent a big convention center for this special occasion. We told her to be very extravagant and to go to any expense. Thanks to Pam, we had our reunion in an old abandone d house anel it was catere d by He ward Johnsons. DEBBIE MARSH provided the dessert — popcorn, fudge, and candied apples. 32 At the reunion we saw JEFF DASH, who told us he had invested all of his money in ROD MORRISON’s pigeon farm about 20 years ago. The venture never got off the ground because Rod ran off with a rock band. Entertainment for the reunion was SCOTT HOWLAND’s country band. DIANA TIBBS is the lead saxophone player, with CAROL STOUT as the lead singer. We bumped into PATTY HUNT and KATHY HARRIS, both of whom worked for Mars’ only public library. Nobody recognized CHERYL GARRETT and KEVIN SPRIGGS when they arrived, for they were both bald — due to the use of Grecian formula 44. When SCOTT DEAL, the student council president from 1979, arrived everyone silently replied. Big Deal! When BILLY BAKER came in he brought along some golden brown crescent rolls from his bakery. We guessed he decided to carry on the career that seemed to fit him. We sat next to SANDY HUFFMAN, the only 43 year old cheerleader on the space cadet squad. After high school, Sandy decided to make cheerleading a career. She cheered for STEVE FEAR’s number one basketball team called the James Gang.” JIM SCHABACKER has become a mortician and BRYAN HARRIS was his assistant. A deathly silence fell over the reun¬ ion when they entered. AMY HAINES is now a bookkeeper at both locations of the Brown Jug with her two friends. FRED CURRY and his wife, Connie, are now photographers for the magazine called Death,” owned by WAYNE GARD¬ NER. It is the chief competition of the magazine Life.” Walking through the crowd was JOEY GARNER yelling craps anyone?” CARLA HACKETT is now helping CHERYL ASHCRAFT with her new art form. She builds statues out of ashes and she calls it ash-craft!” DEBBIE HAYS was walking around asking for money for the Billy Graham Crusade. She is the president of his fan club. DEBBIE BRUCKNER and RICK PATTERSON were sitting quietly in a corner. It was easy to tell that Debbie is the boss in that family. We didn ' t get a chance to talk to TAMMY HALL or KEITH CULLISON; they were having a good time reminiscing with their old friends. EMILIA FERNANDEZ was the last to arrive at the party. Unfortunately, it seems as if she didn’t have a very good time because everyone kept bumping into her, thus knocking her plate of food off her head. Her only reply, HOW DISGUST¬ ING!” As you can see, a lot of things had changed since that so-much-looked-forward-to graduation day, yet it was so happy to see that that great class of ’79 was still A-OK!!! w ' We sell more recreational vehicles than any other single dealer in central Illinois. We girls had all the eyes ’Cause we liked to mix and mingle With those tough” senior guys. I think our fellows as freshmen Enjoyed their first year just as well In spite of Homecoming activities With all the show and tell”. Our following year we watched the Freshies” push pennies down the floor And hide from the evil seniors As we had the year before. After passing Driver’s Ed. you’d think Our parents would be pleased. But some paleness was detected when We asked them for the keys. We juniors on New ear’s Eve made More than resolutions; We started up some parties and mixed up some solutions. When Post-prom came along. We were ready with our dates. To experience how it feels To rock” on roller skates. Sixty-six of us got together And took our Senior Trip Down to the quiet Ozarks WTiere our sponsors took a dip”. Cornin ' home from ’ole Missouri We made a stop at SIX FLAGS, Rode the mighty Screaming Eagle” And upchucked in the bags. We baffled all the teachers on The day we chose to skip; Though they may not have liked it. They couldn’t give us any lip! At graduation, some of us broke Down into tears As we said good-bye” to friends We’d made during those four years. AWAY I cannot say. and I will not say That she is dead! She is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand She has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair If must be, since she lingers there. And you, 0 you who the wildest yearn For the old-time step and the glad return. Think of her faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here , . . Mild and gentle as she was brave, When the sweetest love of her life she gave To simple things: where the violets grew Blue as the eyes they were likened to, The touches of her hands have strayed As reverently as her lips have prayed . . .
