Maroa-Forsyth High School 1977 Troj anaire 63rd Edition Dedication We, the CLASS OF 1977, would like to dedicate this yearbook to the 1976 Maroa-Forsyth Football Trojans who won more games than any team in the school’s history. The Trojans won ten games and lost two, were undefeated Meridian Conference Champions, and State Semi-finalists in Class 1A. Many school records were broken including most wins in a season, 10; most points scored in a season, 478; most yards rushing in a season, 3,871; most total yards gained in a season, 4,431; and first appearance in the state play-offs. This season was a fine tribute to a group of outstanding young men who were willing to make the sacrifices necessary to have a successful season. ’Class of 1977’ 2 We the editors of this 1977 Trojanaire yearbook, want to thank all those students whose help made this year¬ book possible. A special thanks goes to our advisor, Mrs. Coen, for all her patience and help in meeting our 1977 Trojanaire Staff CO-EDITORS . .Stacey Allen, Tracy Stoutenborough JR. Class Prophecy Taking a slightly pre-judiced (yet entirely objective) look at the senior class of 1977, we see that the many outstanding individuals who comprise the class are destined to fame and fortune in just a short five years. Of course, everyone remembers the unstoppable Trojan Machine of 77. The biggest headline to hit the coun¬ try was, ’’The Maroa-Forsyth Trojan Machine turns PRO! and they did, too, never in more splendor and glory. With the entire senior class behind them, they have moved on to conquer all the pro teams and have finally made it to the Super Bowl! Each member has also been awarded individual honors - STEVE OLIVER received an award for most yards gained in a season. DARYL TIBBS won the best punt return award. DAVE ZELHART was given the Vince Lombardi award. JOHN HOCKADAY, the award for most passes completed in a season, and JIM PECK for the most passes caught in a season. MIKE BECK won the best punting average in the NFL. LES DAY won the award for cancelling the most opponents (permanently) in a season. MIKE WILSON won the meanest lineman award. DOUG DEAL received the award for the most defensive tackles in a season and BRENT PARKER received the award for most passes intercepted in a season. DWIGHT HILL won Rookie of the Year AND most improved player. CURT YOUNG won the award for most outstanding center. BILL HENDERSON won Most Valuable Player Award. It was announced over the loud speaker at the Super Bowl that the first class reunion for the seniors of 77 would be the following weekend at Runyen’s Roast Beef in Maroa. It was here that we finally caught up with each other. MIKE RUNYEN, owner and manager of Runyen’s Roast Beef, told us that business was fantastic and that his restaurant was the local hangout for everyone in Maroa. Aside from being on the football team, MIKE BECK has teamed up with BRIAN HAZLETT to patrol the streets and protect the people of Maroa. BRIAN feels very important being the town cop. JIM STOUTENBOROUGH, WES WEIKLE, DAVE ZELHART, BRAD McCOOL, and MIKE CHENOWETH have formed the most successful CO-OP in the history of farming. By putting all their land together, they now own and farm the entire state of Illinois. CINDIE WESTERMAN, of course, married DAVE ZELHART, and GINGER DAGGETT married WES WEIKLE. Both girls are combining working careers with being farmer’s wives and are raising children very successfully. SHERYL REIDELBERGER, BARB FOULKE, MARCIA SHAW, and MARSHA LIENHART all flew in together from Washington, D.C. for the reunion. It seems MARCIA and MARSHA are Senators in Congress, and SHERYL and BARB are Congressional Court Reporters. The only problem is that MARCIA or MARSHA can’t say anything without either SHERYL or BARB writing it down and reporting it. All four are getting filthy rich. DEANNA MONTGOMERY (now DEANNA CHANDLER) is married to Duane, and she brought her family to the reunion - they were the cutest little bunch of nanners we ever saw. Both NANCY THOMAS and CARRIE LAND are head nurses right next door at Maroa General, Maroa’s first and only hospital. MARY BUCKELLEW being the only doctor in Maroa is the Chief of Staff at the hospital. They still have not found a cure for the two-shirt syndrome. Maroa has a new orphanage, which was organized by CRYSTAL BENSCOTER, JEAN CURRY, and KATHY FOSTER (now KATHY SHOOKMAN). They are raising the kids with a stem hand and a little tender loving care. JOHN COEN and KELLY REDMAN came in together from the south where they had been working on construc¬ tion together. JOHN finally paid off his car. JANET SMITH has opened her own bubble gum factory with bubble gum cards featuring Trojan players and their statistics. She keeps a steady supply of gum going to the orphanage. GREG FORD and TRACY STOUTENBOROUGH combined their insurance companies and now have a monopoly on insurance in Illinois called Tallman’s Ins urance. RANDY HUFFMAN and BRIAN JOHNSON drove in from Indiana where RANDY just won the Indianapolis 500 with BRIAN as his main mechanic. JIM KITCHENS and MIKE BAKER have formed KITCHEN’S and BAKER’S Auto Shop where they’ll ’’Cook you up a good deal. BRENT PARKER and CURT YOUNG are in business together - BRENT builds the houses and CURT installs the cabinets. Between them they are building up all of Maroa and Forsyth. Although JUDY SPRIGGS couldn’t make it to the reunion (she was driving in the Rockies in her semi) CURT said he jawed with her over the CB and she’s doing fine (she ' s now Mrs. Bert Jones). BRENT and CURT get all of their materials from JIM PECK, who now owns Sims Lumber. They hire KATHY BOYER to decorate their houses. DENNIS CULLISON told us that he was the president of the nuclear power plant in Clinton. RANDY ROHRSCE1B and TIM HALE are pilot and co-pilot of Maroa Airlines; they ' re both really flying high. MALE A PLANKENHORN and STEPHANIE VAUGHN are the stewardesses for Maroa Airlines. PENNY NICHOLS is the manager of Fashion Lane and she is still everyone’s neighborhood Avon Lady. LORENE ASHCRAFT WEIKLE is married to Bill and they have several beautiful children. LORENE owns a bank as does BOBBI BRAGG, whose motto is Butch your money in our bank. BOBBI’s main interest is financing fashion merchandising and CHRIS BRILLEY is working with her. JACK CURRY is the janitor at the high school. He’s the only member of our class to become a permanent resident of the high school. TERRI COWELL and VAL WHITEHEAD decided to stay in Florida after graduating from college. They are both models and have frequently appeared in the centerfold of Popular Mechanics. Their main job is to lay in the sun all day and reel in the rays (and the guys). MIKE WILSON has moved his rating system up to the national level and now has his own Wilson’s Ratings. He truly enjoys his job and is becoming nationally famous for his work. DEBBIE LEACH is happily married and has so many Johns running around she can ' t keep track of where she ' s going. TERESA CLARK owns the entire town of Cabool, Missouri. She is Mayor, Secretary, Treasurer, and total population. KAREN BLAZER SIDES is now living at the Pentagon. Karen, Charlie, and the three kids makes 5 sides altogether. JILL BRUNNER, one of the world’s best artists, has become so popular that some of her paintings are hanging in museums all over the world next to Van Gogh, da Vinci, and Picasso. BOBBIE COFFMAN has used all her experience in Junior Achievement to become the supervisor at NAJAC in Indiana. She has also started a raccoon farm. CONI HACKETT is a major stockholder at Staley’s and is working on some anti-pollution devices for her firm. SUSAN CLIFTON has become a major motion picture star and her first feature was Little Women. She was giving everyone her autograph at the reunion. At Sir Richards in Maroa, BILL HENDERSON and LES DAY are bouncers, and DIANE DARBY works there as a waitress. LINDA BRANDT is Maroa’s leading psychologist and her most frequent patient is none other than DAN HAUFFE who is going insane over why spelling always has to count. JO SCHABACKER has started her own chapter of Laughaholics in Maroa. She has finished the first step of the program and can now stand before a room full of empty chairs without laughing. The second step is to say something. STEVE OLIVER, owner and manager of The Heartbreak Hotel, told us that in a couple of years he plans to retire at the ripe old age of 25. With memories in his head and Elmer ' s” in his hand, he plans to do a turna¬ bout and spend the rest of his life mending those broken hearts. (A man can only take so much, you know). BECKY McBRIDE, WANDA CHATHAM, TINA VEST, and PATTY MARLATT were all married shortly after high school and each brought their husbands to the reunion. They have pooled their talents and have formed a new Women’s Club in Maroa. The things they are accomplishing are unbelievable. JIM BOWER and ROBERT LEE joined the armed forces after high school. JIM came to the reunion sporting the rank of Captain in the Marine Corps. ROBERT told us that as a veterinarian in the Army he was able to work with more animals than are in a freshman high school class. RICK McKIRAHAN and DOUG DEAL both have professional careers in basketball; they couldn’t be at the reunion, but we watched them in a game on television during the party. JIM LANE told us about his combination ranch and ski resort in Colorado. He showed us a picture of it and it was fantastic. We are considering holding our next class reunion there. DWIGHT HILL and DARYL TIBBS have taken time out from their football careers to jointly coach a college football team (who will remain nameless as their record isn’t so great). Perfection in coaching can only do so much - it’s too bad their team doesn’t have a little TROJAN POWER. KURT TERRY started his own vocational school where there are no buses back and forth (the kids live in). GARY DUNHAM is a business tycoon. He is in the process of building Maroa into a metropolis. TONY HARRIS is a combination engineer and accountant for ’’Allen Wrenches Unlimited’’ owned, of course, by STACEY ALLEN. They are on the verge of a major breakthrough to perfect the allenwrench. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of rating it gets from ’’Wilson ' s Ratings. ' JOHN HOCKADAY was so overwhelmed with being in the play in high school that he decided to produce and direct plays of his own. The longest running play on Broadway was one of JOHN’S. We can only wait to see what other masterpieces this genius creates. As you can see, in just five short years, our class has virtually taken over the country. Just wait ... in five more years we will have conquered the world. We were no longer the mighty eighth graders, but were now the lowly freshmen, ready to start out on that great road that would change us into adults. The class officers were: President, Wes Weikle; Vice-Presi¬ dent, John Hockaday; and Secretary-Treasurer, Jim Peck. Our sponsors were Mr. Bingamon, Mr. Camp¬ bell, Miss Etnier, and Mr. Lueck. Homecoming was a lot of fun. Our float’s theme was Melt ' Em. Our homecoming attendants were Val Whitehead and Ed Walters. During the year we lost a great sponsor, Miss Etnier. We also lost ten classmates: Ted Brown, Mary Buckellew, Steve Dooley, Jim Frontz, Earl Owens, Connie Runyen, Bill Sheets, June Speer, Glenda Tully, and Elaine Wise. Our Sophomore year we lost Nick Fellwock, Tom Garrett, Linda Gramman, Teri Ferrill, Ralph Lane, Don Knotts, Jim Neilson, Eric Shoemaker, and Ed Walters. During the year we gained Mike Beck, Geoff Boyd, and Rick McKirahan. Mrs. Coffman became our new sponsor. The officers we chose that year were President John Hockaday: Vice-President, Deanna Montgomery: Secretary, Marsha Lienhart: and Trea¬ surer, Jim Stoutenborough. Our Sponsors were Mr. Bingamon, Mr. Campbell and Mr. Lueck. Mr. Lueck left us in November and Mr. Seigle was with us to finish out the year. Our homecoming float theme was Track ’Em Down, which won second place. Our homecoming attendants were John Hockaday and Sta¬ cey Allen. During our junior year we entertained the seniors at the Prom at the Clinton Country Club. We also had a much improved football team. During this year we also gained many students: Cheryl Baker, Jim Bower, Kim Colbert, Rhonda Vest, Tony Harris, Don Tuel, and Ron Tuel. We also said good-bye to some old friends at the end of the year. They were Mark Brown, Dave Bloomberg, Dave Blanchard, Geoff Boyd, Debbie Brandt, David Burns, George Burns, Kim Colbert, Rhonda Vest, Ann Johnson, John Marsh, Ron Tuel, Don Tuel, Missy Sims, and Bill Wilson. Mr. Lemme replaced Mr. Seigle and became one of our new sponsors. Our class officers were President, Marcia Shaw; Vice-President, Brent Parker; and Secre¬ tary-Treasurer, Missy Sims. Our float theme was Shield A Victory. Our homecoming candidates for King were Curt Young and John Coen and our Queen candidates were Kathie Foster and Marsha Lienhart. In the fall of 1976 we entered the dear old halls of M.F.H.S. for the last time. During this year we gained Debbie Leach, Becky McBride, Chris Brilley, Tim Hale, Linda Brandt, Eric Dessart, and Mary Buckellew. Our class officers were as follows: President, Marcia Shaw; Vice-President, Greg Ford; and Secretary-Treasurer, Marsha Lienhart. Our float, with the theme of Put the Hammer Down, did not place. Our King and Queen candidates were Kathie Foster, Stacey Allen, Curt Young, and John Hocka¬ day. John and Stacey were chosen as King and Queen. Our four years at M.F.H.S. brought us many memories. Twelve guys of our senior class gave the most valuable memory of all - the opportunity to play in the State Semi-final Football Playoffs. This great accomplishment will long be remembered. In publishing the TROJANAIRE II, the students want to have a paper that informs as well as entertains the student body. The Trojanaire staff had several money-raising projects. In the fall, they held the first bake sale of the year which was very successful. Also, during football season, members of the staff assembled and sold buttons that had the football team ' s picture on them. During February, the staff provided a delivery service for Valentines which was done more as a service rather than to make money. This year the staff has been active and they have come up with new and better ideas which improved the paper for their school. 69 F.F.A FIRST ROW: G. Briggs. D. Tibbs, J. Sioutenborough, W. Dowd. Veta is trying to introduce her daughter, Myrtle, to an active social life, but El wood disrupts everything by bringing home a friend, a six foot, one-and-a-half inch white rabbit named Harvey, which is invisible to almost everyone. Elwood’s personality affects everyone he meets and he is responsible for changing the lives of Nurse Kelly, Dr. Sanderson, Dr. Chumbley, and several other characters in the play. Harvey gradually becomes visible to other characters and the play ends with the audience not knowing whether the people who see Harvey are insane, or if everyone else is.
