He came to Maroa in 1948, a recent graduate of Millikin University, to coach not only football, but also basketball, baseball, and track as well as to teach American History, World Geography, and Boys Physical Education. Throughout his 24 years at MFHS he touched the lives of hundreds of students with his dedication and devotion, his sincerity and patriotism. He brought life and relevance to the events of American History; he coached his teams in sportsmanship and instilled the will to win. Perhaps his greatest thrills were coaching his 1961 football team to an undefeated sea¬ son and assisting Coach Herman Edwards in leading the 1957 basketball team to the Sweet Sixteen. To the memory of a great coach and teacher, the Senior Class of Maroa-Forsyth High School dedicates the ’72 Trojanaire. Wa£hyv D. We have done our best in trying to make this, the 58th annual published at Maroa-Forsyth High, the best ever. Many times through the year we wondered if we would get all the pages in on the deadline. But the great cooperation of our staff and of our dedicated advisor, Mrs. Coen, enabled us to do so. As we prepare the last copy sheet for this annual we look ahead to the future, but we hope you will never forget 1971-72 - the year that was. Thank you. 3l U 6 $CJ UcA ' 72 7 o}aaaX Qtafo CO-EDITORS. A little scared, we respected those who knew more than we did and they soon taught us the rules that we had to abide by. One of our first moves was to elect our officers: Terry Walters as president, Terry Etnier as v.-president, Scott Warner as secretary, and Lynne Miller as treasurer. Our sponsors were Mrs. Berry and Miss Sullivan. Charlie Young was elected reporter and Lori Alexander and Rick Cox were our delegates to Pep Club. At Homecoming, we proved our greatness with our first place float, Let ' s Whip Up A Victory. Diana Mashburn and Lori Alexander were our queen candidates. Joe Vaughan and Terry Walters were our king candidates. Initiation time came around, and we were once again laughed at. The girls dressed in boys clothes and the guys dressed in girls clothes. Never has anyone seen such good looking chicks in the Class of ' 72 - padding and all. The best time of the day, though, was when Carol Crouch popped her wheelies on the tricycle. Initiation over, and all of us back to normal, we started selling Christmas candles. These went over well and put a good sum in our treasury. In the spring, we nominated Carole Thom ley and Terry Etnier as our Mardi Gras candidates. During the basketball season, we came through again with our undefeated freshman team. During the year we gained Dale Adams and lost Alice F.rlenbush and Bob Walters. Our sophomore year, we added Jenny Leonard, Cheri Luster, Carol Orrell, Debbie Thomas, and Gene Walker to our roll call, which had dropped to seventy-five. Terry Etnier was our president, Joe Vaughan, v. -president, Donna Kapper, secretary, and Lynne Miller served her second term as treasurer. Sponsoring us were Mrs. Berry and Mrs. Query. We worked hard on our homecoming float, Record a Victory. Carole Thomley and Ginny Sullivan were nominated for queen, and Rick Cox and Verneil Leggett were nominated for king. Again this year, we sold Christmas candles to make some money. They were prettier than last year ' s and put a lot more into the treasury. During the year we lost Dale Adams, Carole Dickerson, Russell Gould and Mark Lake. Freshman Float Freshman Initiation As Juniors in 1970-71, Terry Etnier was elected president, Terry Walters, v-president, Donna Kapper, secretary, and Kay Taylor, treasurer. Our sponsors were Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Query, and Mr. Boyd. Soon we were out selling magazines at every door, adding more and more to our growing treasury. At every football and basketball game, we popped popcorn and sold it along with candy and pop. This brought in some money, too, as well as a free pass to the game. The big project, of course, was the Prom. It was held at Southside Country Club in Decatur on May 1, 1971. Stately pillars decorated the rooms and a band from Blue Mound provided the music. Post prom was at The Bowl, where everyone was locked in the bowling alley until four o ' clock the next morning. On May 9th, the Junior-Senior play, ’’The Mouse That Roared, ” was given with a lot of us in it and others helping behind the stage. During the summer we gained Sam Bridges. We came back to Maroa in August of 1971 for the last time, as almighty seniors. Now we were the rulers! Scott Warner was elected president, Ted Garner, vice- president, Kay Taylor, secretary, and Pam Chenoweth, treasurer. During the year we gained Arlin Watson and lost Ben Logue, Fred Shipp and Terry Veach. Mrs. Berry was still hanging on as our sponsor, along with Mrs. Coen, Mr. Ritter, Mr. Brandt and Mr. Elston. Our Homecoming float entitled ”Our Porpoise Is To Win, placed third. Carole Thomley and Verneil Leggett were nominated as queen and king candidates and they were chosen as the king and queen at the dance on Saturday night. On Jan¬ uary 7, we served a sandwich supper before the Maroa-Illiopolis game. Many people came and enjoyed our sandwiches, homemade pies, and cakes. Our basketball team did great during the year and won the Meridian Tournament for the first time. During their four years of playing together, they never lost a game on our home court. That ' s great! !! As always; WE ARE LOYAL, WE ARE TRUE, WE ' RE THE CLASS OF ' 72! ! ! Senior Float 47 Freshman Basketball Team o-« OktSS PiOph Cy Well, here it is 1982. We have looked up the alumni of the Class of 72, to see what they are now doing with their lives. CAROL CROUCH has taken Mrs. Dotson ' s place as the music teacher at the Maroa-Forsyth Schools. DOUG FAULKNER is playing the leading role in all of Hollywood ' s latest sport flicks. Motion Raceway has been taken over by Mr. Chevy - alias BILL NORFLEET and his partners LEIGH TURNER, MARK GREENE and JOHN LEACH. LARRY DARLING is now the proud owner of the Pat-Lar Supermarket in downtown Maroa. DICK SCHWARTZ has joined his father on the high school board of education. A plane can now be chartered daily from Maroa to Decatur or Clinton with SCOTT WARNER as the pilot, and CAROL ORRELL as the pleasant, smiling stewardess wearing hot pants on every flight. JERRY IVERSON runs the Iverson Jr. Bootery Chain Store, at the south edge of Maroa where we see STEVE EAGLER and little ones waiting in line. We have a booming Agricultural Store in Maroa now. I was happy to see PAM CHENOWETH as the head secretary. JOHN FENTON and BRIAN WALTERS were out¬ side, selling farm machinery to customers. BRAD ROBERTS is now selling insurance. He finds it much cheaper to own his own business. The Boy Scout Leader is DAVE BRAGG who is a good friend of LYNNETTE MILLER who is the head Den Mother. Weikles Apartments are quite filled these days with tenants who like to have parties every weekend. Those tenants are JENNY LEONARD, CHARLIE YOUNG, TERRY ETNIER, KAY TAYLOR, CAROL DAVIS, and RICK COX. DENNIS HOCKADAY and DAVE KENYON have turned Rigdon ' s Variety Store into one of the most booming head stores in Central Illinois. It’s just across the street from KAREN JOHNSON ' S Glove and Handbag Shop. CINDY BARNETT is the biggest supplier of candy for kids at M-F High School. When we went to visit DAVE THICKSTEN in the hospital, after his 19th wreck, we found LORI ALEXANDER taking his temperature. She loves being a nurse. SAM BRIDGES has a petition going around town. He is trying to get old movies put back on television, such as Sea Hunt. We took time to eat lunch at the Red Door where ED DOAK is the headwaiter and BILL LAND provides the old fashion honky-tonk piano music. SCOTT WINDLAN keeps order around the place by being a bouncer. The Penny ' s Store is doing a good business with VERNEIL LEGGETT as their Byers ' Assistant. We didn ' t see DONNA KAPPER, but we hear she is busy campaigning throughout the nation. She may be our next President of the United States. We have a good feeling that Donna might be elected because DAN JENNINGS writes all of her speeches. CAROL THOMLEY ' S smiling face is on many of the billboards, advertising Diet Candy. 48 GINNY SULLIVAN now lives in Florida. She is in charge of training porpoises in a Gulfarium Show. There is one little untamed porpoise which is her favorite. They call him - Phlipper. ARLIN WATSON now keeps our city safe because he has been appointed chief of police. Arlin gave ROYAL PLANKENHORN a job directing traffic in downtown Maroa. If you need a cute little pet for your home, go to JOE VAUGHAN ' S Minner Shop. Joe has a rare type of bull frog for sale. He calls all of them Jeremiah. Make sure you don ' t miss the next episode of Roller Derby! JANE HANES will be racking up the points for the Midwest Pioneers. Jane bought her famous skates at TED GARNER ' S Variety Store where he specializes in sleds ! ROBIN HASSINGER has been made an honorary Indian since she loves T.P. s. Especially T. P. trees. Maroa ' s beautiful Park District is looked after by TERESA WOODARD. But some people have been complaining because the only kind of tree she allows in the park is Oak trees. RUTH GRIFFIN is still attending the ball games as a faithful citizen taking home the spirit trophy every year. JOY YUNDT and BEV MATHEWS are still working as steady ticket takers at the ball games. Mrs. Coen sure appreciates her typing helpers who are JANET FEAR and CHERI LUSTER. JEAN SIMPSON, JANET SHIREY, and CAROLYN FYKE now work in a shop on the Square in Clinton. They find it saves gas that way. MARK CARDER, when taking his break from pushing carts around at Turn Style, eats at the Red Wheel where JACK EDWARDS is the head cook. MARTY SEABERG is now the union head of sack boys for Tolly ' s in Decatur. ALLEN FLETCHER is the carrier for LINDA HUMPHREY ' S newspaper. DONNA MARXMAN is also on the staff at Linda ' s Newspaper Office. The big city of Maroa now has a taxi cab service. ELAINE LEINHART is the only cabee who drives a Cougar. DEBBIE MORRIS and NANCY YOUNG are in charge of the new nursery school in Maroa. DIANA MASHBURN and TERRY WALTERS are now professors at Yale University. All of that hard work in high school finally paid off. A new gas station is being built in town. JIM SCHNEIDER and JIM SPRIGGS are partners in this new business. They are trying to employ MIKE ZOMBRO to work under cars so they won ' t have to buy a lift. After finding out what the old Class of ' 72 was up to these days, we decided to leave town and head for home. On the way out of town we passed Mason ' s Restaurant and heard the voice of an auctioneer. Mason ' s was being auctioned off!! Guess who the auctioneer was? You’re right! It was CARMEN PRICE. It was good to see all of the old gang and what they had been doing these past ten years. I wonder what the next ten years will bring? Cfoj W(4KwS VoMuAotiow DONNA KAPPER Due to an extreme closeness in grades as the 1972 Trojanaire goes to press, we are unable to determine whether PAM CHENOWETH, TERRY WALTERS, or LYNNE MILLER is class salutatorian. Maroa-Forsyth is proud of its very find band under the direction of Mr. Ronald Gerald. The band entertained with marching formations during halftime of our Homecoming game at Assumption. They also participated in the Veteran’s Day Parade in Decatur and the I. S.U. Homecoming Parade at Bloomington-Normal. The band was featured in the Christmas Program and presented the annual Spring Concert. For pep meetings and basketball games they always added to the spirit. 76 The band council from L. to R. are: Mr. Gerald, Director; Carol Crouch, Secretary-Treasurer; Teresa Woodard, V. Pres.; Doug Faulkner, Senior Rep.; Bill Land, Pres.; Kay Dees, Fresh. Rep.; Jill Malone, Soph. Rep.; and Nancy Kennison, Junior Rep. President Bill Land shows the Council a marching formation to be used at the Homecoming game. 77 FIELD COMMANDER Teresa Woodard TuMQ iS 78 This was the year that activities played a major role in each student’s life. The most memorable activity is different for each student. These activities are the product of the great efforts of the students to better student life. Without these activities, boredom would surely dominate the school year. At the homecoming dance. King Verneil and Queen Carole lead their court in the first dance. This gave the students a chance to start their floats, and it also gave the band time to practice for their half-time routine which was presented Friday at the Homecoming game at Assumption. The student council set aside the rest of the week with the Roaring Twenties Day, Mixed Schedule Day, and Blue and Gold Day which were designed to arouse spirit in the school. Wednesday was the Roaring Twenties Day and students came to school dressed in the fashions and fads of the period. As you can see from the pictures many notorious crimi¬ nals of the day also made their appearance. Bonnie Woodard, A1 Capone Walters, and Ma Barker Kapper were just a few of the characters that showed up at school. Of course, there are always those who don’t follow instructions, such as Mr. Ritter, who was put in jail for not being properly dressed. Odtob u 12-17 Thursday was mixed schedule day which proved to be quite exasperating for the freshmen. They were just now becoming accustomed to the regular schedule when we changed it all around. It was quite fun to change and really broke up the mono¬ tony of the regular school day. Finally the big day arrived. In accordance with Homecoming the day was called Blue and Gold Day which is our school colors. The day was beau¬ tifully clear and warm - perfect for the Homecoming parade at 2:30 P. M. The parade started out from the high school and progressed through town to the grade school. The FFA-FHA float, with the theme, Put Them In Orbit, won the float competition. The mighty Trojans traveled to Assumption for the game that night hoping to bring home a victory, but the Comets proved too powerful and foiled our Trojans 14 to 6. On Saturday night the Homecoming Dance was held with the theme Love Is Magic. Funkey Magic, a band from Decatur, provided the music. Verneil Leggett and Carole Thom ley were crowned King and Queen at the coronation. At 11:00 P. M. , when the dance ended, the activities of Homecom¬ ing Week 1971 became a memory. 83 UomjCohu ig £nof s Hi Pam. Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles!! What are you looking at, Dennis?
