F. H. S. as fresh¬ men, we could honestly say that we knew everything. Out of the shining halls of Maroa and Forsyth Grade Schools we came, and on into the ivy league at Maroa High. The 67 intellectual members of our class were living proof that the American teaching method was the best in the world. Our officers were the cream of the crop - as presi¬ dent, the honorable Steve Bingamon presided, and in his staff were heard siich names as Mary Marsh, vice-president; Chris Roberts, secretary-treasurer; and Mark Walters, re¬ porter. Yea, though many times we became lost, we could always count on the ex¬ cellent guidance of Mrs. Berry and Mr. Brandt, our class sponsors. In our freshman year we found out that we knew just a little more than nothing and by the time the sophomore year came around we had developed those inward characteristics of modesty, shyness, and gratitude. (We didn ' t win the spirit stick once.) Our modest, shy, and grateful army consisted of only 60 members and our commanders were the envy of all. The dynamic duo Steve Bingamon and Steve Gil¬ len were president and vice-president, and Brad Wilkey was secretary-treasurer. At homecoming Richard Young was second attendant. Carole Edwards was the F. F. A. sweetheart, and at the Christmas Dance, Richard Young was first attendant and Carole Edwards was second attendant. Mr. Brandt was bruised, but still hanging on as sponsor. Mrs. Berry, however, had resorted to the less strenuous activity of v olleyball. During our sophomore year, only 53 brave souls had the stamina to stick it out until our junior year. Yet somehow, even though we were outnumbered, our class still remained superior to all. That year, our brilliant, ever wise officers were Barb McCool, president; Richard Young, vice-president; Marla Vaughan, secretary; and treasurer was Janie Cox. Our homecoming float received 2nd place with the theme of ’’Pour It On. Richard Young was first attendant and Barbara McCool was second attendant at the homecoming dance. Richard Young was also the king of the Mardi Gras Dance and Carole Edwards was first attendant. The two greatest accomplishments of the year were the junior-senior prom which was held at Southside Country Club and the junior-senior play entitled, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Mr. Brandt and Mr. Wood were our sponsors. In 69, again the dynamic duo returned to rule but this time they were switched around. Steve Gillen was president and Steve Bingamon was vice-president. Marla Vaughan held the office of secretary-treasurer. At homecoming die real beauty of our class shone through with Barb McCool and Richard Young as queen and king and with Janie Cox and Tony Lopez, both first attendants. Our float placed 2nd, with the theme Don ' t Jack a Victory. Mr. Brandt left this year, apparently figuring that it’s easier to fill up a car ' s tank than it is to fill our heads with knowledge. However, Mr. Capsel took his place as sponsor along with Mr. Wood. WE ARE SENIORS WE ARE HEAVENLY WE ' RE THE CLASS OF 1970 34 CLASS PROPHECY In the year 1980, we travel back to our old home town, now the growing metropolis of Maroa-Forsyth. At long last these two towns are linked together. We have come to look up all our old school mates. First, we decided to have a look at the old school. Coming upon it, we see the site has been condemned. What a shock to us! We thought it was an ageless, immortal, always func¬ tioning building. Already we see workmen tearing the place down. Calling one over we real¬ ize this is Danny Veach, he tells us that John Moyer, Tony Lopez, Richard Anderson, and he have volunteered to tear down the school bit by bit with their bare hands. We see the new school and decide to visit the principal, Mr. Robert Schwartz. He is in the process of trying to change the state rules to meet his demands. We notice women at stra¬ tegic places in the halls and we try to find out what they are for. We talk to Linda Kitchens, Marla Vaughan, and Sandee Heinz. They are hired to check to see that the girls ' dresses aren ' t too long and that the boys’ hair isn ' t too short. We inquire as to whether any of our class mates have become teachers. Mr. Schwartz said, Chris Roberts is now the P.E. teacher at M.F.H.S. Mrs. Berry taught her all her unique tech¬ niques. He also said that Steve Bingamon has resumed the post of his older brother as Fifth Hour Study Hall teacher. His brother had to retire because of a nervous break down after the year 1969-1970. While still there, Mr. Schwartz told us about a few of our classmates that had become fa¬ mous. Debbie Hendrickson has just taken over Patricia Stevens and changed the name to Debbie Hendrickson ' s School of Beauty Culture. We knew all her graceful ways in high school would get her some place, some day. From further inquiry we found out Debbie hired a few of our old classmates to teach at her school. Tina Cole is teaching, How to become Sophisticated. Janie Cox is also teaching. She is teaching a Shape-up course. After we left the high school we drove down a side street and saw private street signs reading Slow Children Playing. We also saw about 15 children playing in one yard. We finally real¬ ized this is Richard and Barb (McCool) Young ' s house. As we stroll down what used to be Main Street, we see a mob running after a figure. As they come closer, we realize it ' s the famous Mark Walters, author of My Views on the Female Sex of which he is willing to talk about to anyone who will listen. It is at last almost noon, and we travel to the famous Waldorf Community Cafe. As usual it is packed full with all of the better people. We finish our appetizing hamburgers, and start our looking over the town. It is exactly noon, and as the noon whistle blows, people begin run¬ ning off the streets and grabbing children and taking them inside the houses. We look at each other wondering what is going on. At last we see! A gang of motorcycles are speeding down the street. The leader is Sonny , alias Steve Greenfield, He leads a gang including Sam Phipps and Brad Wilkey. These wildmen terrorize the town from 12:00 to 12:30 in order to be home in time for their favorite television show, Romper Room. We talk to them briefly and find they are shortly going to leave for California. After this, we are traveling down a familiar street of the old town. This is the street that Miss Bonnie Robertson lived on - now she is Miss Demolition Derby Queen of the World. She re¬ ceived all her practice backing into every car she could find in high school. Tony Halicki briefed Bonnie on the safe driving rules. Tony is now the Driving Instructor at Maroa-Forsyth High. 35 Besides Mark, many other authors have come from Maroa-Forsyth. Susie Spriggs is now the famous author of ”1001 Ways to Give a Horse a Bath.” Vickie Price is also a well known novelist. She wrote ”201 Ways to Fool a Polock.” While talking to Vickie about her book, she told us Brenda McDaniel and Ruth Craig have just released a smash record, We’re So Pretty.” Early the next day, we had our hair done at Imogene Beccue ' s Coiffure. I hope we can get some of the curl out of our hair in time for the big game tonight. Later in the morning we ran into Jay Seaberg, and he told us he has opened up a new teen dance club. He got all his experience working at the Morgue during high school. Jay told us of the new hospital being built south of Forsyth. Dianne Waters and Glenda Crum are going to be the head nurses. The Maroa-Forsyth city council decided to call the hospital the Have Faith” Hospital. Finally, it was time for the basketball game. As we entered the door of the gymnasium we found Brenda Crum welcoming people to the game. Clifford Doak and Steve Gillen have become the Varsity and Junior Varsity coaches. Their most famous players are Charles Porter, Dennis Pulliam, and Greg Shull. These three players are known all around the world for their unique dribbling skills. At half time we went to the basement for some refreshments and we saw Carole Edwards working at a candy stand. As we came closer, we saw she was selling Clark Candy Bars. The evening ended with a victory for Maroa, who won by 83 points. So a good evening was had by everyone - on the Maroa-Forsyth side that is. On our third day in Maroa-Forsyth, we rose early to take a drive in the country to see if anything had changed out there. We see a farm truck approach. Larry Groves tells us that Mark Cochran is the Executive Vice President of the Max Factor Corporation in New York. Other farms we see on the way are, Marcia Pense’s farm, the largest ranch in the world with Ed¬ ward Yundt as the foreman. Also we pass Jack Shaw ' s Christmas Tree farm; Jack has made Maroa the Christmas Tree capital of the U.S. Brenda Morgret has also won National fame, she is the Nations best archer, she got all her practice on Mrs. Berry ' s archery team. Mary Marsh has won a gold medal in the Olympics; she received all her training from Mrs. Berry, the best swim coach Mary has ever had. Donna Leslie has married the president of Bob Jones Academy. She liked it so well down there she found a way to stay. There were still a few of our old classmates that we couldn ' t find any traces of, so we went to visit Linda Votaw, who is now running the Decatur Tribune. Linda told us what Karen Moore and Dennis Hamilton were doing. Karen is now a housewife in Peoria with two children. Den¬ nis Hamilton is running a chain lumber plant for his father in Naperville, Illinois. Mike Greene was the only one left that we couldn ' t find much information about. Linda said that the last she heard about him he was in Chicago running the Playboy Club for Hugh Hefner while he was on vacation. 36 We finally looked up all our old classmates and decided we should be on our way back home. So we, Karla Linn and Jenifer Marlow, started back to Detroit, Michigan. We both missed our families very much and we were sure that they missed us. We left Maroa-Forsyth thinking of the past and wondering what the future would bring for the class of 1970. ’69 ALUMNI LIST CONTINUED 49. Karen Peterson Bell Telephone 50. Kathy Price Married 51. The country club’s banquet room was decorated in a typical GAY 90 ' s style. There was an old street lamp post in the center of the room with a bicycle built for two sitting beneath it. The tables were gayly decorated and tne favors were BLACK DERBY HATS for the boys and RED AND WHITE GARTERS for the girls. The dinner menu was TOMA TOE JUICE, STEAK, BAKED POTA¬ TOES, GREEN BEANS, TOSSED SALAD, PIE and ICE CREAM. Dinner music was furnished by Gary Warnick at the piano. There was also a banjo player, a Barber Shop Quartet, and the RONDO JAZZ QUARTET, which played for the dance. Mr. Wood and Mr. Brandt were the class sponsors for the Prom and they did a good job. The Prom attendance was great, there were between 80 and 100 people present. THE GAY 90 ' s PROM ended as a GREAT SUCCESS for the Junior and Senior classes ... 79 80 Last of the MOHAWKS. With a sophomore team that has a 12-1 record and was 12-0 as freshmen, Haines just can’t help but dream about the future. The loss was 5452 to Mount Zion Tuesday night. Doug Faulkner, the 6-foot-4 pivotman, loads the team with a 25 pah scoring average in¬ cluding a 2 point per¬ formance. r , v . But Faulkner was recently promoted to near full-time varsity duty, thus leaving the sophomores without their con¬ sistent scoring threat. It was a strategic move by Haines. “I felt it«would give our varsity a shot in the arm,” Haines said. “Besides, I wanted to find out if these sophomores could win without him.” i He was right in the first in¬ stance as Faulkner has already given Maroa several dotma figure sooring nights. And Faulkner’ former teammates made tbs ' Situation more eooouraging by ad¬ ding three consecutive vic¬ tories. Ted Garner, 5-2, moved,in to the pivot, to Jon stir-ting frontliners Charles Young (5-1) and Ed Doak (5-2). The back court ' is made up of erry St¬ aler and John Fenton, a pair of 5-8 sparkplugs. “A coach has Just got to he proud of a group like this,” ’’They haven’t very afteo and t’s really asniethhig con¬ sidering the fact) that they play jf their “Tbpy adjusted to each other extremely early,” he said. “Each seems to know in¬ stinctively what the other can and will do if given the oppor¬ tunity.” , It all adds up to some variety of talent. Doak is the leading r, followed, by Garner, the hot outcourt hi’e FertoO puts the 1 on defensively in the line. Young Is what calls the “pidSip man.” For instance. Young was held to two points by DaLand-Wsldon In the first half. Than be camp back with a 16-point second half to pick up the tagging of¬ fense. “Of course, Jt s not just Young who does this Uod of stuff, Haines added. “If so¬ meone isn’t on someone else usually is.” k In last week’s 80-67 victory over Stonington, Staler was the “on” man with 22 points. Doak added 15 and reserve Verne il Leggett 11. - “Leggett has gtvba us saaee real good games as have Mark Carder and Lory Darling, a pair of reserve guards,” said Haines. ' - “And twee Mis ' saw ■ great to work with,” ha praised “It’s Just HBposritta. net m thhtk about the future with a b4ich like this around.” Dennis Hamilton (24) is down the floor with the ball. Mark Walteis (44) scores 2 points. 99 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Carole Edwards Mickey Mullins Bev Harris Janie Cox Kit Stoutenborough JV CHEERLEADERS Ginny Sullivan Cathy Morris Carole Hamilton Diane Mashburn Nancy Harrelson 101 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS 102 STEVE GILLEN CAROLE EDWARDS 103 BRENDA and GLENDA CRUM CLIFF DOAK JANIE COX VICKIE PRICE DEB HENDRICKSON ?
