Maroa-Forsyth High School opened the new football season with a 20-0 triumph over Argenta-Oreana. Why the sudden switch in fortunes? “We’ve got a more balanced scoring attack,” replied Coach | Walter Boyd. “Last year all that our opponents had to do to win was stop Terry Lienhart, our top runner. But they can’t do that now. We have too much depth in the backfield.” Teaming with fullback Lien¬ hart are running back Larry Day. flanker back Joe Woolums and quarterback Chris Warner. Boyd also said that the hard knocks suffered last season helped to toughen the team. “The same boys are back but they’re bigger and smarter. They didn ' t make any of the mistakes Friday night that they did last year. Was Boyd surprised by the victory? “No. I wasn’t surprised that we won. I was just surprised that we won by as much as we did. “This club has arrived soon¬ er than I figured and I expect it to improve even more. If it ! does, we should have a winning season—provided we’re not hit by injuries.” Although Boyd stresses that the Trojans “work together as a unit,” he can’t get around talking about Lienhart, 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior who scored two touchdowns and an extra Maroa Trims Argenta 20-0 As Lienhart Scores Twice point in the Argenta victory. “Yes, Lienhart is a fine foot- 1 ball player. I wouldn’t trade him for any running back I’ve seen around. He’s a hard runner- fast and powerful. “Terry’s very hard to catch when he gets in the open. He’s not the shiftiest back in the world, but he breaks a lot of tackles. It’s hard for one man to bring him down.” With Lienhart back in top form and other players on hand to support him. Maroa’s pros¬ pects look pretty good. At least, it won’t be another winless sea¬ son. Maroa-Forsyth, winless last season, trimmed Argenta-Or¬ eana 20-0 Friday night in a high school football opener as Terry Lienhart scored two touchdowns and an extra point. Bethany started Meridian play with a 7-0 victory over Assump¬ tion. In the other Merdian game, Maroa-Forsyth pounded Macon 34-0 as Larry Day and Terry Lienhart each scored two touch¬ downs.
