Class Mistory On a fall day in 1953 the class of 57 started on the high school trails as Trojan Warriors. We were 34 in number and our Chief was Mr. Darrell Biggs. Next in rank was Kenneth Chalcraft as President; Tom Meador, Vice President; Bill Walden, Secretary; and Sharon Lowary. Treasurer. During our first Home¬ coming we won third place with our float, and chose Sharon Lowary and Mari¬ lyn Mullins as our Queen Candidates. During this year we gained 3 new Trojan Warriors, Cleta Reish, who left one week later, Lonnie McClung, Mary Lowe, and Jerry Wattles; and losing two, Geralding McCormick and Marilyn Mullins. In 1954 we started the second league of our journey with 37 members. We had gained Eddie Cooper, Sandra Colbeck, Wayne Ward, and Pat Gass, and lost Sharon Lowary and Winnojean Cohea. Our officers were Kenneth Chal¬ craft as President; Vice President, Tom Meador; Treasurer, Lonny McClung; Secretary, Nancy Graff. This year we won first with our Homecoming Float. Sandra Colbeck and Nancy Graff were our Homecoming Queen Candidates, with Sandra Colbeck as Centennial Queen Candidate. Shirley Wilson and Nancy Graff were our Christmas Queen Candidates. During this year we gained Beverly Himes and Dean Cole, and lost Dave and Jerry Lynch, and Ida Glynn. We began our third year as Trojan Warriors with 34 in our class. We had gained Judy Sellner and Barbara Marshall, and lost Marsha Morris and Ann Kar- ban during the summer. Our officers were President, Lonny McClung; Vice Pres¬ ident, Tom Meador; Co-Treasurers were Wayne Ward and Kenneth Chalcraft; Secretary, Nancy Graff. We got first place on our Homecoming Float and our Queen Candidates were Nancy Graff and Barbara Marshall. Barbara was chosen Homecoming Queen. Our Junior Play, Lights Out, was a riot in the making, which was presented April 7. Our magazine sales were a success this year and so was the Prom which was held at Hotel Orlando. Our theme was Over the Rainbow. During this year we lost Gary Archer, Sandra Colbeck, Joe Crowd- son, Wayne Ward, and Dean Burgener. As we started our last year at M.H. S. we were 32 in number. We gained Jerry Riddle, Larry Craig, Mrs. Gloria Tozer, and regained Ann Karban. Our leaders were President, Lonny McClung; Vice President, Nancy Graff; Treasurer, Fred Staudt; Secretary, Tom Meador. During the first semester we lost Myrtle King. Our Homecoming Float got second. Nancy Graff and Luann Braden were our Queen Candidates. Nancy Graff was crowned Queen. Our Senior Play, It’s Great To Be Crazy, was enjoyed by all. Now as we near the end of our Trojannaire life we look back and find that we have had many happy times which will be remembered by us always. Class Poem Twas the year of fifty three. When we pitched our tent. We aimed to camp in Maroa country, So we galloped to Maroa High where we had free rent. We met the chief and his council. They taught sign language and how to cook a stew. Through the years most of the braves stayed still, But some traveled westward and we lost a few. We had many happy times around the fires of our camp. Where we held our war dances and feasts. Our warriors were the best they were champs, Our pride in them shall never cease. They gave us a big brave to see to our needs, He has kept us safe through dry and lean years, And to him we dedicate this cowhide book because of his deeds, Now we say good-by as we move to the land of many buffalo and deer. Gary McClung led the scorers with 55; Ken Chalcraft had 54; and Jim Brown was third with 52. Gary and Ken also led the team in rebounding with 44 and 39, respectively. The championship game was played with an overflowing crowd on hand. Varsity Basketball Scores Maroa 52 Elkhart 59 Maroa 40 Argenta 39 Maroa 80 Bethany 46 Maroa 92 Lovington 43 Maroa 82 Mt. McClung, P. Odle, L. James, B. Connelly, C. Wilson, Coach Boyd, R. Hughes, F. Staudt, L. McClung, J. Brown, K. Chalcraft, D. Thomas, R. Gossman. Maroa continued its winning ways in the Sectional Tourney by upending Taylorville, 57-54, due largely to a second half rally, led by Fred Staudt. Ken Chalcraft turned in a magnificent floor and scoring game. The Trojans ' cause was ably aided by James Brown, Gary and Lonnie McClung. Possibly the sweetest victory of the year came over highly regarded War- rensburg-Latham. Trailing at the half by three points, Maroa’s cause looked very dim. As the third quarter wore on the fruits of victory seemed to slip from Maroa ' s grasp. With 4:00 remaining in the fourth stanza, a brace of free throws by Dick Thomas enabled Maroa to take a one point lead and from that point on, like the Trojans of old, they fought valiantly and achieved the ultimate 59-50 victory and a bid to the Sweet-Sixteen. After all details pertaining to the organization were completed, Superintendent W. D. Keyes applied for a charter which was approved for Maroa High School, Number 6385, known officially as the H Maroa Chapter. The object of the organization is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students in Maroa High School. Members are to be selected by the principal and four members of the high school faculty; approximately 15 °lo of the senior class are chosen. Appropriate ritual initiation ceremonies are held during an assembly program. Authentic chapter pins are awarded at graduation. Not only does this organization define and mark high standards for the ideal secondary school student, but its national scope gives the school high signifi¬ cance and unusual prestige. John E. Kitowski, a veteran member of the faculty, is the sponsor of this new organization. The End a Hard Year’s Labor Th Br.t Y «rbookf A r IAYIOR MAPf TAYIOR PURUSHINO COMPANY PAUAS HAAS m ' i
