Rinderman, RR Sabo, WP Schaefers, JL Swickert, GL Walter, FT Woodka, TK Kilt' .7466 of Jlflarmion Main Building Here it is that the cadets get the educational works-education for God, for neigh- bor, and for self. Religious, academic, and military courses prepare the boy to become the man. Sports and social activities round out the program to give each cadet a complete education. I1f'5 easier to fight for oneir principles than to live up to them. Inner Workings Originally designed for recreational and dining facilities, the RECREATION HALL retains the dining facilities and a small area for recreation. Expansion problems have forced classrooms to encroach on ping-pong, billiards, tele- vision, and the juke box. But we get by. Take a whiff of the smoke on a rainy morning. The man who med to hum the midnight oil now hm iz Jon who harm the gas at midnight. Snugly tucked away on the campus is the BARRACKS, the sleeping quarters for the greater part of the resident cadets. Father Damian and Father Martin hover protective-ly within these walls. 3 ABBOT COLUMBA MARMION, O.S.B. Admiration for the holiness of Abbot Mar- mionls life and for the soundness of his spirit- ual counsels in the books published under his name influenced the Benedictines in their choice of a name for the present school. Abbot Mannion was born in Ireland in 1858 and died as abbot of Maredsous abbey, Bel- gium, in 1923. Ten years later our school be- came Marmion Military Academy. 4 RIGHT REVEREND GERALD BENKER1 O.S.B., Ph.D. Abbot of Marmion Abbey Prefidefzt of Marzzziofz Nliliffzry Academy Father Abbot Gerald, first abbot of Marmioi was born in Louisville, Kentucky, October 21 1909, professed as a Benedictine at St. Meinrai Indiana, August 6, 1929, ordained to the pries hood on May 22, 1954, was named and cox firmed as Abbot on March 21, 1947, and wi blessed on May 22, 1947. In ten years he has brought Marmion fz along the road of progress and expansion. We Dedicate the I 95 7 Keveille fa His Excellency THE MOST REVEREND LORAS T. LANE, D.D. Bishop of Rockford It is our honor and our privilege this year to offer our efforts in this book as a welcoming gift to our Bishop. From the day of his arrival in Rockford, November 19, 1956, to the present day, we have been happy to note Bishop Lane's interest in the youth of the diocese and his understanding of our problems. We like him and his ways. We hope he likes us despite our Ways. The Marmion Cadets salute His Excellency, THE MOST REVEREND LORAS T. LANE. We Open Our Eyes fer I 956 and I 95 7 Each year the school term begins officially with a Solemn High Mass offered by Father joseph, Marmion's Headmaster. Deacon of the Mass was Fr. Bernardg Sub- deacon was Fr. Stephen. Assistants to Father Abbot Gerald at the throne were Father Columban and Father Barnabas. That, in a few words is the reason why some pictures are accompanied by the name of the Senior only. Perhaps some Seniors did fill out the blank given them but did not route them properly. Whatever the reason, the data did not appear at deadline time. Tournament debating began with that sample practice in the art of arguing. During the first two seasons Marmion belonged to no league, but had to travel to Catholic schools in Chica o for ri t d b g p va e e ates. In january, 1949, the Cadets were invited into the METROPOLITAN DEBATE UNION, a group of sixteen suburban Chicago High Schools. This immediately threw them into a season of thirty debates. In 1952 the De into the Monogram Club. Instead, the members devised a distinctive shield to b . . . e worn with pride by the select few who are given that honor. Only twelve alumni have these shields. bate Club voted down a suggestion that they be incorporated A kind of apostolic succession exists in the club, for Ron Kienlen debated 'th T W1 om Wedig, who debated with Rod Malone, who debated with Dick Hartigan, who debated with Dick Schiller, who debated with Dave Smith. Che Karat Soothes the Savages Chief among Marmion's essential organizations, THE BAND has always accepted every challenge issued. As a marching band, the unit performs daily on the drill field or at other formations. With a change of tempo, it soothes the excited cadets during inspections. On the concert stage, it enters confidently and competently into the realms of the masters. At sports events, it blasts away to arouse a fighting spirit in the teams and in the spectators. Briefly, Oblates are lay persons who are affiliated with an Abbey and who follow the spirit of the Rule of St. Benedict in their own state of life. Their form of life is the same as that of the Third Orders. Rather than have a sodality or some other religious organization at Marmion, we have something specifically Benedictine, for the Institute of the Oblates of St. Benedict provides all we need in that way: a way of life, religious activities, and school service. Primarily, the Institute exists for the boys' own spiritual formation. It is one which will carry over into later life with its inspiration and with its spiritually idealized habits. This is how the Benedictines of Marmion Abbey and Marmion Military Academy looked ten years ago. Top row: Fr. Wulstan, Fr. Leo, Bro. Henry, Bro. Michael, Bro. Placid, Fr. Leonard, Fr, Terence, Bro.
