Born in Rowan, Iowa, eleven years after the close of the Civil VVar, Fr. Benedict was a pioneer in the true sense of the word. Uugouts and sod houses were the prevailing types of dwellings in those difficult days. YVell does he remember going to school as a small boy in such a hillside dugout in Nebraska, where the family moved in 1879. ln his early teens he tended cattle for neighboring farmers and later he worked in a printing office in lVoon- socket, South Dakota, where he was confirmed by Bishop llartin hlarty, U.S.B., the first bishop of the Dakota territory and former first Abbot of St. lX1einrad's Archabbey, St. Xleinrad, Indiana. 'lihither he went in 1894 to study for the Holy Priesthood. It is now fifty years since he received that sacred office-golden years they were, crowded with the mani- fold duties of a faithful son of St. Benedict, vice-rector of St. llleinrad preparatory seminary, guestmaster and prior at both St. lkleinrad and lklarmion, teacher, founder and first editor of the Catholic monthly magazine THIS GRAIL, counsellor and confessor to priests and lay people. Indeed these years have been resplendent with good works done for God and for men with more than usual priestly zeal, patience, and understanding. With happy hearts we say to Father Benedict: Malay God richly re- ward your many labors for Him and for His Church.
