Two elements in the lives of cadets - light and shadow - are pictured in the following pages. The record of ioy and sorrow, of happiness and trouble, of pleasure and pain - this is the story of our year. The Seniors THE HRECH BUILDING Site of Mess Hall and Punishment Squad, of classrooms and pool tables, of PX and cleaning details - the story of light and shadow again in the life ofa cadet as seen by the Rec Building. .. i --- 13 I L--1-ri' ?'-. EQ num., THE BARRACKS THE CCLOR GUARD Taps and Reveille, sleeping and awakening, radios and shin- ing up-againthe light and shadow enter the picture. Memories of light moments and memories of troubled times intermingle with the life as lived in the barracks. HILLINGER, D. D., fourth Bishop ofthe diocese of Rockford, Illinois. lt was during our Senior year at Marmion that the Most Reverend Bishop received his appointment to the diocese, was consecrated and installed. Bishop Hillinger came to us after a priestly life of varied experience. After his ordination to the priest- hood, he served for a short time as assistant pastor in Chicago. He spent fifteen years on the Mission Band, during which time he gave Missions and Retreats in every part of the United States. For some time after that he was rector of Angel Guardian Orphanage. It was in November that he received his appoint- ment. On December 29, 1953, he was consecrated Bishop in Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago. On January 14, 1954, he was installed as Bishop in Rockford's pro-cathedral, St James. Since that time, despite the demands upon his time and energy, Bishop Hillinger has made it a point to visit Marmion several times. For that we are grateful. It is with a sense of honor to us that we humbly dedicate our efforts in this book to THE MOST REVER- END BISHOP RAYMOND P. HILLINGER, D. D. ff N M? 12351 , ,Hz-.Q THE BAND lg Hard work on the part of Captain Haugland and diligent practice on the part of the cadets have made this yecl's edition of the Narmion B d an o competent and capable organization that has aided the Cadet Corps in innumerable ways.
