Clledication VVith this issue, the tenth appearance of '1'iili RIEVIEILLIQ, we welcome back to Marmion a for mer headmaster whose qualifications and capa- bilities have received merited recognition in his choice as the first abbot of the newly created lYlarmion Abbey. At the close of the scholastic year 19-10, blar- mion regretfully said good-bye to Father Gerald after his short term of office. However. the inter- vening years had not taken him so far from the school that he had been forgotten. VVe have his assurance, too, that those years had not separated us from his thoughts and prayers. Now, this same Father Gerald returns to us vested with a higher authority and a greater dig- nity. Appointed as lWarmion's first abbot by the Right Reverend lgnatius lisser, U.S.B.. Abbot of St. lVleinrad's Abbey, the appointment was confirmed in the Apostolic Brief which, signed in Rome on the feast of St. Benedict, lllarch 21, 19-17, elevated lvlarmion to the status of an in- dependent Benedictine Abbey under the patronage of St. Augustine of Canterbury. Father Abbot Gerald was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in the year 1909. ln 1923 he began the studies at St. lVleinrad which culminated in his ordination to the Priesthood on lllay 22, 193-1. After several years devoted to teaching in both the minor and major seminaries at St. lyleinrad. he was sent to lvlarmion where he carried on the duties of headmaster from 1938 to 19-10. From lXIarmion he went to the Catholic University of America where be received the degree of doctor of philosophy in 1912. Un his return to St. llfleinrad he was appointed rector of the minor seminary which post he held until his blessing as abbot of hlarmion in the ceremonies presided over by the lvlost Reverend john -1. Boylan, Bishop of Rockford, on bday 22, 19-17. ,llllli REVEILLE extends the warmest welcome to Father Abbot Gerald Benkert, O.S.1i.. P1i.IJ., and prays that God will bestow on him the bless ings and graces that will enable him to spend many years in his new position. f - w -1 1115 Rl5Y1Ell.L1i b'l'.-XFF. 4
