Mama.: rqlffeuagefaomiffaefqdiai Your four years of training at Marmion have prepared you for the greater battle of life you enter upon graduation. You are fortunate, indeed, that you have been prepared for the physical strife which is at present a part of your life's battle. But you are doubly fortunate in the preparation for a warfare that only ends with death. By a life lived according to the ideals that you have been taught at Marmion you can look forward to a victorious V-Day in your life's Struggle. 6 Weaq Reamau! Qailnea Qildml, 0. 8. B. 'llo the lllarmion band and Captain Theodore Haugland, director of the band, should go all possible credit for the wonderful job they have done in providing stirring music to enable the Cadet Battalion to put on the many ceremonies throughout the year. VVithout such music as was displayed at all parades' by the band the rythym and excellency of the marching Cadets could not have shone as it did. Un December 8, 19-lf-lf, the band staged its annual winter concert. Although a snow storm was raging, the band played to a large crowd which thoroughly enjoyed everything. The band showed a growing im- provement over former years as they played popular and classical selec- tions with equal ability. 'llhe annual spring concert was held April S, in the llflarmion gym- nasium. An even greater improvement over former years was shown by the band, under Captain 'llheo. Haugland's direction, as they treated a packed house to a wonderful variety of classical and popular pieces. This year's REVEILLE staff has had the great honor of dedicating this book to the Most Rev. Bishop John Boylan of Rockford. The staff sincerely hopes our year-book will merit your approval, and be the medium through which the graduating class can recall happy memories at Marmion. Aon from .'Idwi.vrr-'I'hanks to Tony Prisco, Joe May, Lee Orso, Frank Michelsg without their help this hook would not have been possible. 58 IW ' Gale! The NLXRNIION CADIQT has completed a successful season once more as the voice of the school. During the year the CADET has been the outlet of all hap- penings at Nlarmion, score sheet of all school athletic contests, and the scandal sheet for some. ln his first year as advisor of the CADET, Father Raymond has done a remarkable job in wrangling the articles from reporters, and getting it printed in time for publication. Nluch of the credit for the line issues has been given to the cadets when it should be given to the editors and Father Raymond. The CAlJET'S sport page was always interesting as the teams made such fine records. The Daylight and Border Line columns continued in the same Hne style as in previous years. Two new columnsel'Corridor Comment and Glenn's Gleaningsu, flourished on the sport page this year and promise to be very interesting in the future. The front page was taken up by important news of school activities and by the heroic deeds of Marmion boys in the service. The CADET once again received a rating of good from the National Scho- lastic Press Association. This was judged from a staff at the University of Min- nesota. Ifrlifnr in Cllirf .. . MR. lu. Carribine of the Queens lVork. Several of the Cadets go in each Saturday to attend the meetings. There are representatives of most of the Catholic High Schools in the Chicago area. At these meetings po'nts of present day import- ance are discussed by those present. Marmion Cadets always take active part in these discussions. At school these topics are discussed among groups of Cadets, thus helping to spread the idea of Catholic Action among the Cadet Corps. Due to present transportation difficulties it is impossible for all the Cadets who would like to attend these meetings to go, but the representatives are rotated so that every one who wants to attend may do so at some time. From time to time meetings are scheduled at school at which the whole Cadet Corps participates in the discussion of some of the points brought up at the meetings. naw., '7fre Bfeuef Wiagin It has always been the policy of lllarmion to fos- ter devotion to the Blessed Virg'n, hlofher of God. It is the design of the school that all cadets belong to the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin. Accordingly on December the eighth, the Feast of the lmmacu- late Conception, all the new cadets are annually received into the Sodality of lllary. The reception of the new clients is held by the School Chaplain, who is moderator of the Sodality. Besides fostering devotion to the Blessed Virgin. the Sodalists are eager to take part in the Sodality's chief activity for Catholic Action-Cisca. The Sodality and Cisca as well as the Holy Name Society is under the direction of Fr. Hubert. O.S.B., the Chaplain of Cadets. f,gil'l'!'.V of l:i.l'l'II Rirhrzrzl J. fllaguire lliillilllll rf. Cook Jfofq Name Sacielq As it is a joy for every Pastor of a Parish to have all his men and young men belong to the l'lo'y Name Society, so also lVlar- mion feels happy in the fact that all the Cadets make 'he solemn pledge shortly after each new school year is under way. 'lihe pledge is made to the Holy Name Society Moderator, who acts as delegate of the Diocesan Director. 'lihe spirit of the Cadets toward their less fortunate brothers in Christ can be deduced hy their generous contributions to the work of the lndian lhlission both in money at Sunday blass and by clothing which they no longer can use. From time to time the Chaplain sends quite substantial sums to the hrlissions up in North and South Dakota, to the Negro missions in the South, and to the lllission Crusades of which Marmion is a member. Another practice quite commendable is the Penny a Day Club during Lent in which each Cadet contributes a penny a day. Also from time to time other special collections are taken up, such as on lllission Sunday when the contributions are very generous. 'lihis spirit is general among all the Cadets who feel that some day the small amount they contributed will be returned a hundred fold. Fr. While this is going on, a number of the other servers are helping out the other Fathers over at the altars in the Faculty House. ln order to attain a position as an acolyte, the cadet must be a constant communicant and have no marks chalked up again his name. He must learn and be able to recite fluently all of the Latin prayers required throughout the Mass. lfach Sunday when the Corps celebrates High Mzlss, the outstanding aeolytes are appointed as the assistants to the solemn celebration. A few times through the year, special events such as St. Benedict's day, Palm Sunday, etc., arise which require a Solemn High Mass to properly pay tribute to them. At such occasions, the pick of the acolyte crop is used. The greatest thrill of the year is when a cadet is privileged to serve at the lfield lllass on llflarmion Day. Besides serving at the hlasses, the acolytes also act as assistants at Benediction and Rosary Ser- vices. The Faithful Cadets do not go unrewardedg they are given special privileges by Father Hubert, the Chaplain, such as attending CISCA in Chicago and attending and serving at weddings and funerals in the Aurora vicinity. Slattery, T. A. Ralcewich, D. B. Bagdon, E. B. Bannen '7 Under the able direction of Father Columban, the Cadet netmen are drilling daily in preparation for meets to come. Among teams on Marmion's 1945 schedule are VVest Aurora, East Aurora, and Joliet and later on will come the District meet in which players will compete in the District to gain the right to go downstate. Returning squad members are Tom Ralcewich, Dick Miller, jack Slattery, Frank Butler, Bill Distell and Gene Banner, who all have had some experience. This all points to a successful season. Dick Greenwald, who had shown great improve- ment last year, has been lost to the armed forces. First singles this year is handled very capably by Gene Banner, who has shown consistent im- provement. Second singles is handled by Alfonso Garcia. a newcomer to Marmion, who, with practice, will develop readily. Dick Miller com- petes in the third singles and he has some experi- ence from last year. The first doubles are in the hands of Bill Distell and Frank Butler, while Tom Ralcewieh and Jack Slattery complete the makeup forming the second doubles. At this writing only one match has been com- pleted on the schedule. They dropped a close 3-2 match with the Tomcats of East Aurora, who were led by a boy who traveled downstate last year, Bob Crable. On the hrst night, the match was halted by rain, but continued the following evening. Marmion won both doubles matches, but East Aurora swept through the singles with- out a mishap. With continued improvement, the Cadets should find this a successful season. 'Wash Under the guidance of' Arnold Schaeffer, the Mannion track team has been practicing for the past few weeks. As we go to press the squad has not yet participated in any meets Although it is impossible for us to know what kind of record they will make, it is possible for us to appraise the squad on the basis of returning lettermen. Bill Snider, senior distance runner, is back this yr ar. llluch weight may be placed upon his ability to make a good showing in the endurance runs. Once again we will see big Al Cook heaving the shotput. jerry hlclloy is back to take his turn with the high and low hurdles as well as is Rab- bit O'Keefe, Little Mickey lylaguire, and Speed Goodyear. Coach Schaeiter may be depended upon to in- sist upon hard work in practice every day, a policy which is sure to get results. This policy of hard yy ork together with the new interest is an indi- cation that track prospects for the next few years will be good. '1'RAcK Sen EDU LIE April -Batavia .. .. .. .... It was the good fortune of the athletic department this year to have Brothers Leo, Philip and Bernard assigned to help carry on this important work of the physical development of the Cadets. In the last few years Phy Ed has been very much emphasized at Marmion. Startled at the beginning of the war by the statistics given out by examining boards for the Army in regard to the physical fit- ness of American youth, the school authorities insisted that an added emphasis be given to lVlarmion's Physical Education program, a pro- gram that has always received much personal attention from Father Norbert, the Superintendent of the school. The schedule of intramural sports developed by Major Ireland at Marmion is well rounded and admirably adapted to the building up of bodily health in a sane, safe, and pleasant manner. This year the Phy Ed program includes team competition in touch football, softball, volleyball, handball in the fall, as well as swimming. When cold weather sets in roller skating, ice skating and basketball are added. The spring period is taken up with tennis, swimming, softball and track. The groups are divided into Major and Minor leagues, each league having four teams of about I4 Cadets, the rest of the Cadets taking part in varsity sports. Experience in past years has shown that time spent taking part in these sports in a hearty way means less time spent in the infirmary. 88 fain-Scion!
