Brother Henry is the Academy tailor. in which all uniforms originate, including their repairs which requires a 2-l hour vigil. The hrother is also in charge of our new cleaning equipment. Brother Henry has been with us for many years, and is very much appreciated. Weneaaile 8401110111 Brother Gerard is an all around man. heing iniirmarian and in charge of the rc- nowned canteen. Not having enough to do taking heed of 388 cadets, l see him wash- ing the school has and painting the school field pieces. Brother Gerard is Very popular amongst the Corps, not only hecause he has the keys to the canteen, hut because of his jovial mood. HR. Gi-'R,xim, 0.8.15 4aaeweZl ancf Qual .luck eapfain fbann Ambitions and aspirations for sound bodies, sportsmanship, and loyalty were just a few of the qualities instilled in the heart of every Marmion Cadet by Captain Dunn. Aside from his duties of in- struction in Commercial Subjects he organized and conducted a very efficient intra-mural recreational program. His services here at lVlarmion were terminated by a Government order to fill a position in St. lVlarie. Michigan. The Cadet Corps and Faculty are sure that Captain Dunn will be as successful in his new undertakings as he was at Marmion. Qazfhea Bmeclicz' As a result of the appointment of Father Benedict, O.S.B., to the Pastorate of St. lVlarys Church, Huntingburg, lndiana, the Cadet Corps lost the congenial compan- ionship of a line instructor and true friend. Father Benedict was well noted for his counselship among the students, who contin- ua'lj' sought his advice. The Faculty and Cadet Corps extend their sincerest wishes to a great priest, Father Benedict. No greater proof could be asked of the accomplishments of a man: as shown by the tangible improve- ments under the supervision of Nlajor W. F. Armin. During his three years of service lllajor Armin's greatest achievement was in attaining the construction of the 550,000 recreation building, long a necessity on the campus. Installa- tion of a new mess hall, recreation- al facilities, an adequate post-ex- change and countless ground im- provements were just a few of the numerous deeds of our former quartermaster. ln his new position in South Bend we wish him the success that was his here at hlarmion. This year they have presented three plays, l'Afraid of the Dark , Gentlemen of Honor and Doctor For a Day , made up of entirely boys' casts. This is an organization which is growing and next year promises to give exceptional per- formances under the direction of Captain McNevin, the faculty di- rector and coach, who spends much of his time coaching the members. Social activities are particularly enjoyed by all Mar- mion cadets. The lWadonna socials between Nlarmion and Nfadonna are held four times throughout the school year and this gives the young people a chance to get acquainted as well as having a good time. The Homecoming dance on October 30 was the first informal social affair and was attended by cadets and alumni. Among the beautiful changes made was the erection of a new liturgical altar and the construction of a military arch which separates the sanctuary from the rest of the chapel. The large statues of the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph have been redecorated and occupy positions on the two side altars. The higher regions on the walls of the chapel have been painted to give a stone-like effect, while the lower parts of the walls have been painted to give a marble-like effect. The possibility of the entire project was made through the fi- nancial interest of lylrs. C. M. Weeks and Mrs. A. Lake. New vest- ments were also donated by the Aurora Mothers Club. sawn, of Me wma wma The Sodality of the Blessed Virgin is an organization to which almost all Nlarmion Cadets belong. The purpose of it is to increase devotion to our Blessed Mother, and promote Catholic action. A reception of new cadets is held annually. This year it was held on December I2 and approximately one hundred cadets were received into the Sodality. Reverend Father Maurice, O.S.B., M.M.A., Chaplain, is the Director of the Sodality. Annually at this same time, cadets renew the pledge of the Catholic Students Mission Cru- sade, whose purpose is to help the mission, both financially and spirit- ually. A third and impressive religious and military service is also given at this time: the conferrng of the accolade of Knighthood of the Knights of the Grail. Each new cadet is knightecl with a saber by Father Norbert, Superintendent. These last two orders are closely allied with the Sodality. rqnnual Reheal The Reverend Walter Sullivan, O.S.B. of St. Benedicts Parish, livansville, Indiana, conducted the annual spiritual retreat this year. The retreat is held every year for the cadet corps. It began on No- vember 4 and ended on November 7. The theme of the retreat Was, Reverence for Christ, and the following spiritual exercises were carried out every day, Holy Mass, Conferences, Spiritual Reading, Rosary, Stations of the Cross, and the l'Question Box . Having this retreat at such an early date enables the cadets to profit by this spirit- ual renewal during the remaining portion of the school year. Father VValter has long labored among boys and youths and was Well quali- fied to help his listeners improve their spiritual well-being. Rev. The occasion was the annual Christmas Party sponsored by the Aurora Chapter of the Marmion Mothers' Club. The faculty and Cadets were the guests of the mothers who, under the direction of their president, Mrs. R. L. VVagner, Vice- President Mrs. A. L. Keyes, Mrs. M. Blagrave, Secretary, Mrs. V. Willsiilser, Treasurer, had planned the eventful afternoon. Needless to say the tempting refreshments served to them did much to put the Cadets in the Yuletide spirit. The decorations in the gymnasium kept in stride with the atmosphere in that they included a highly illuminated Christmas tree and-yes, even Santa Claus was there. The affair was not Wanting with music either, for thoroughly capable Carols rang within the gym's walls. The Mothers went home gratified by the warm, happy smiles that they saw wherever they looked. Mmaqm An activity to which a cadet must apply himself is as manager of an athletic team. Where would the football, baseball, or track team be without a manager to take care of its equipment? Special recognition should go to Cadet Howell, who has work- ed faithfully all year, and is the head man- ager. The managers have many other duties besides taking care of equipment, and have been of valuable assistance this year to those in charge. They are to be complimented on their line work. lU'Malley not present when pict Qhemleafem If the success of a cheerleading squad is determined by the quantity of cheers extracted from the students, this year's cheerleaders served their purpose excellently. Gzmrrlr-BURNS flgnatiusl. tit lilaamion lVoie4 in Me 4 ' IN THE INTEREST OF DIOCESAN SPORTS By Bob Cremer It could have been only coincidence last Sunday that the opponents of the varsity squad could make only the number of points which the opponents of the Frosh-Soph squad made in the preliminary game. To gain a double victory on the first appearance of the season should be quite a pat on the back for the coaches of the two teams. Both deserve such a pat for the hne work they have been doing during the past weeks. Neither, however, is satisfied with the performance of his team. Captain Ireland has been switching players around on the varsity all week. Friday evening brought a bit of excitement to 30 Cadets who were chosen to make use of the tickets to the basketball game between the college All-Stars and the Detroit Eagles played in the Chicago sta- dium. Tickets were obtained by Captain George Ireland, the basketball coach. At 2:00 o'clock this afternoon Marmion opens its season on the hardwood against St. Francis of Chi- cago, here at Mzrrmion. On the following Satur- day evening, December 6, Marmion plays Geneva and on Sunday, December 7, it will be Marmion versus St. Thomas of Rockford, both games played on the home court. Last Sunday our hardwood Hiron men met some- thing a little too tough for them. The Ignatians must have felt that they had been in a game, too, and had not been out to a tea party. The score would seem to imply that the game was one sided, but such was not the case. lreland's ironers had lots of steam and heat, but the Ignatians had the height and enough speed to turn the trick. Marmion looked inexperienced as St. Patrick's of Chicago spoiled the Cadet home debut. Two de- feats compose the Marmicmn record to date, but the Aurorans faced tough competition in both contests and always are plenty tough within the diocese. For the first time since the series began in 1933, Marmion recorded a win over Mooseheart, the Cadets punching over a 6-0 win in a hard-fought battle at Mooseheart Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. The only score in the game came in the third quarter, when left halfback Amby Geib crash- ed through a hole in the right side of the Moose- heart line, dodging and twisting his way thirty-three yards to the goal line. The only other scoring threat was made by the Cadets in the first quarter, but a five yard penalty caused the push to be halted. Two former diocesan athletes stood out for Loras College as the Dubuque school counted its first two wins of the season, both being home games. . . Cen- tral, Pella, 1940 Iowa Conference Champion, was the first to fall before the Lorasmen, as Jack Sensor, Marmion '39, counted one of the Loras touchdowns on an end-around play, and Paul Goodwin, Aquin '38, played a bangup game from his position at the halfback post .... Last Sunday St. lVIary's of Wi- nona, Minn., provided stiff opposition for the Du- hawks, but Loras won, 6-0 .... This time it was Senson who shone in an outstanding defensive game at end, with Goodwin taking the ball across from the Winona four yard line. All other diocesan teams met with defeat over the week-end, Marmion being the only eleven to record a victory. Marmion counted two touchdowns in the second half to dump St. Thomas from the undefeated ranks in the Illinois Catholic Conference, the Cadets winning by a 12 0 count at Aurora Sunday. Loss of Vic Hartmann, ace halfback of the Purple and White, handicapped the Thomist attack and sheer power punched across the winning Cadet markers. Gieb and Duray were standouts in the Marmion backfield with Flannigan and Perez sparking the Cadet line. ' 141212121 ! l Z 3 t4 4. . . If you are 20 Years of age or over. I'm positive that some day you'll be a great writer but then you probably wonlt write to poor little me. I can,t begin to tell you how much I enjoy your letters-wouldn't it be wonderful if we could write to each other every time we thought of each other? But here I am in Lincolnwood and you miles away in Marmion. How selfish of me to want you with me all the time-but darling I can't help it. It's-just YOU. I had a perfectly lovely time on your last month-end leave. I wish we could go out together more often-honestly honey bun I can't enjoy myself any more unless I go out with you. I try to study, but I can't-for invariably my thoughts turn to you. I keep wish- ing that our school was going to have a dance or something so I could invite you. Then we could dance all evening-into the wee hours of the morning. Honestly honey bun, when I dance with you I feel like I'm floating on a cloud-we're just like the Couple In the Castle -and honestly-I never want to come down. All the girls are envious of my going out with you-your fame is really spreading. All those medals on your broad chest-that perfectly cute saber. I know I shouldn't be telling you these things for I was always told a girl shouldn't wear her heart on her sleeve-but honestly honey bun, there are some things I just love to say. g Oh-oh-There goes the record-just a moment honey bun till I change it- there, I decided to play it over again. Every time I hear it I think of you. Remember that night you called me your little Tangerine and said you just wanted to squeeze and squeeze me? Oh dear, I suppose I'll have to wait a few weeks before I see you again. But I'll be brave and try to bear it. I do hope we can go dancing again soon-honestly honey bun--I love you. See you soon, darling-till then, I remain your honey bun, Love, VIRGINIA. May 25, 1942, A. P. CAfter Promj DICAR MR. SCHNITTGEN:- I really shouIdn't be writing you, I haven't even heard from you for almost two weeks! You are apparently too busy for me-not that I'm suffering any pain from it. I'm being rushed with dates so, lately, that I've hardly had time to think about any- thing-let alone think about you. Well, there goes the telephone again-probably Jim, or Bob-or Pat-who knows? Now there was Larry Suspension Schneider who was a tennis star, Bob Conaty who every year turns down offers from the Cincinnati Reds, Paul Wllite a scrappy forward in basketball, and Bob Charles who liked to trail Ockert in the 440 yard dash. Well, spring was in the air and the four boys felt their gypsy blood surging. Today is a free day, what will we do ? asked White, hoping someone would suggest basketball. Let's have a game of doubles on the tennis court, cried Schneider, hope- fully. No-I challenge you all to a race around the track , put in Charles, looking around to make sure Ockert wasn't near. My knee is sore , Conaty said. Let's have a game of softball . 'Nol the other three chimed. I get it, let's go see the girls! laughed Schneider. All nodded their agreement. So down below the hill went the four adventurous lads. They sang Chattanooga Choo Chooi' as they made their way along the railroad tracks to busy downtown Aurora. By instinct the stripe'ess buddies found the doorway to the Federal Bakery. Sure enough, there were the girls! Lucille beckoned to Wliite. Aubury motioned to Schneider. Marcella waved to Charles-and Conaty called a waitress and ordered pie and milk shake. Conaty ate and drank while the three couples sat silent feasting on each others' eyes. All afternoon, they laughed and talked until their laughter became so loud, the manager showed them the door. With tearful eyes they bade farewell under the neon sfgn YValgreen's at Broadway and hlain, for it was growing dark. On the way back to Nlarmion, VVhite, Charles, and Schneider laughed and talked about their girls while Conaty, who was trailing the caravan, merely grunted about Redheads in West Virginia. But fate was yet to spoil their afternoon of freedom. Father Norbert and Father joseph came driving along Lake Street. The four unsuspecting lads were whistling Blues In the Night. Then one of them spotted the black Studebaker. Ye Gods-look! one pointed with te1'ror. Their cadence became slower and their minds were busily occupied thinking up alibis. But all in vain-for they knew only too well that excuses don't go with the Commandant. With hanging heads the four figures returned to the Campus-there was no ringing, or laughing or whistling-they could see a light in the window of Father VVilfred's office as the Board of Discipline called a meeting.
