The officers have records in both Military Science and Scholastics to be proud of. Although the company has not received com- petition honors for two years, it still holds its ranks of superiority in close order drill. During mid-season examinations Cadets from the ranks of Company B receive the highest scholastic standing. In the personal inspections throughout the year Company BU gave a creditable account of itself. ln previous years, Company C , although handicapped by the larger per cent of plebes, placed first in one or more awards. In 1938 it placed first in Company and Platoon Com- petition and in l939, it took top honors for the best squad. The Company, to a man, has worked harder this year than ever before, in the hopes of upholding the honors gained in previous years. ln both close and extended order drill Company HC has shown its proficiency. XVork like this is possible when each man is willing to do more than his share for the Company to which he belongs. Promotions and demotions, as well as other military adminis- tration are effective in the Band in the same manner as in the rest of the Cadet battalion. Besides leading the parades and other bat- talion ceremonies the Band is often called upon to play at athletic contests. The Band prides itself as being a self-sup- porting organization. This is made possible by the Band Tag Day and the two scheduled Band Concerts each year. The proceeds of which go into a fund for the purchase and repair of instruments. Awards, in the for mof bars, are given at the end of each semester to the two most pro- ficient members and to the two members show- ing the greatest improvement. On Youth Citizenship Day, medals and bars are given to the most proficient members of the various sections of the Band. MARMION 21-ST. FRANCIS U 'l'he lirst game of the season was played at home before a line crowd on Sunday. Sept. 17. The entire squad showed line ahility. St. Francis penetrated deep into our territory but once, this coming in the second period not to do much good. Marmion led hy Captain Phil Barry and Gene Duffy at quarterhack rolled over three touch- downs one point after touchdown and a safety. MARMION 0-MORGAN PARK 2 On Saturday Sept. 23. the Cadets lost a thrilling game by a 2 to 0 score. liarly in the third quarter HBZllTll5ll10H Leonardi got off one of his fine punts which lVlorgan Park returned to mid-field. Un a quick kick lkflarmion was driven to its own two yard line. Attempting to kick out from the end vone the Big l3aml1ino's punt was blocked and recovered giving Morgan Park a safety. The play of Leonardi and Ronan was outstanding in this game. MARMION 21--ST. PATRICKS QKANKAKICICD 0 Un a clear snappy day St. Patricks of Kankakee made their way to Aurora. By hrilliant line play and hard running hy the hacklield men lklarmion annexed another victory from an old rival. Pounding over three touchdowns in course of play the Cadets looked fine. The outstanding players of the day were jack Sensor and lilmer Kucera. L71 721 MARMION 0-ST. BEDIJS I3 Playing their first night game of the year at LaSalle-Peru field a fine coached St. Bede's Academy team downed the Cadets on a water-soaked gridiron. St. Bede displayed power that dominated the play. The outstanding individual playing was turned in hy Captain Harry and Bambino Leonardi. The punting of Leonardi would have done credit to any college team. Eight kicks for an average of sixty-two yards per kick laheled Bambino a great kicker. MAR MION 6-CU LVISR 31 Un October 14, Marmion journeyed to Culver, Indiana and met a fine, hig, well-coached Culver team. Due to the gigantic size of the Culver squad Marmion's heads up hall was not good enough to win. DuMont, Perez, and LeaVell turned in fine performances. MARMION 7-ST. IGNATIUS o lVlarmion traveled to Chicago to play the highly touted Saints on their field. lt was a hard fought, even hattle until hroke up in the third quarter. jack Sensor, one of the fastest men on the squad however, changed the evenness of the game hy a 'heautiful punt return. 'liaking the punt in his own territory he raced fifty-five yards for the score, aided hy good hlocking hy the whole team. lgnatius, however, came hack to score in the final stanza hut the point was missed and the Cadets were victorious. The latter part of the game was played in a heavy downpour and again the punting for lllarmion was done hy Leonardi and it proved a great asset in preserving the one point margin of victory. ' MARMION 37-ST. THOMAS 0 'lihe hoys spirited hy their fine conquest the previous success came home and romped over St. Thomas. The Cadets took the 'liommies in stride hy doing a lot of passing, running, and a heretofore usage of razzleedazzle. For the Cadets the playing of Feuerstein, -fochum, Kramer, lVlartin lllichael, and Hamilton was outstanding. MARMION 6-LORAS 0 A story hook finish climaxed the final game of the season. Yes, it looked like the hoys had journeyed to lluhuque, lowa to play a tie game. However, due to our opponents want of victory they turned to passing and it proved their downfall. Gene Duffy, varsity quarterhack for two years, had called signals correctly to the tune of one-hundred points for the Cadets and yet he had never participated in the scoring. Witll hut a minute to go it was Duffy who intercepted one of Loras's desperation passes and galloped sixty yards for the score, his first touchdown of his career and it was scored in the final game of the season. 1939 J! BEDI5'S 18 The cadet cagers continued their early season winning streak as they defeated the highly touted St. Bede quintet Dec. 10, by the Wide margin of 31 to 18. The Marmion team ,with its fast breaking attack and effective plays which netted a total of 12 goals, completely dominated the play. Capt. Pete Feuerstein led the scoring with 4 baskets. MARMION 21-ST. IGNATIUS 26 Playing without Berg, the cadets dropped their second game in five starts 21-26 to a fighting Ignatius club. Leading both at the half and late in the fourth period the Cadets saw their game fade as Dulske, lllurphy and Wenslsus each dropped in 3 buckets. MARMION 30-FENWICK 16 With a decisive 30-16 victory over Fenwick of Oak Park tucked under their belts, Coach Ireland's Marmion cagers are beginning to shape up as one of the finest teams in the history of the school. MARMION 30-MT. CARMEL 19 At last the Cadets found themselves and played grade A Ball. On Jan. 5, they beat a fine Mt. Carmel team 30-19. Wolaver, Budler, Martin and Feuerstein hit from all corners, while Wiley took care of Carmel's scoring ace. MARMION 17-ST. PATRICKS 18 Both teams hitting badly in a very colorless game, the Cadets dropped their second game to St. Pat's at Kankakee Dec. 22 by a 17-18 score. MARMION 24-CENTRAL CATHOLIC CSOUTH BEND1 10 Playing the same colorless brand of ball that they displayed at Kankakee for the 1st three periods, Marmion beat a fair Central Catholic team at South Bend, 2+-19. WVi1ey stood out for the Cadets with 5 buckets. MARMION 37-ST. IGNATIUS 20 Marmion avenged one of its early season losses on Sunday January 7, when the Cadet basketeers routed St. Ignatius 37 to 20. Coach Ireland's chargers displayed plenty of scoring power in this fracas and their fast shifting man for man defense was well nigh impregable. After their showing today, Marmion rates up with the best of them. Wolaver led the attack with 16 points. MARMION 29-MORGAN PARK 24 The well conditioned cadet five handed a high powered giant Morgan Park five a 29 24 licking before a large following. Feuerstein and White played the best ball for the cadets. MARMION 27-AUSTIN CMINNJ 26 Behind 7-4, 17-10, 2-I--ll, the cadets in the final quarter turned on the heat to outscore 16-2 to win from the Minn. State Champs in what every one thought was a one sided ball game, 27-26. Knoth's two free throws put the Cadets out in front and Wo1aver's fine ball handling put the game on ice. Feuerstein's long shooting was grand to watch. MARMION 26-TRI NITY 30 Playing the same team that beat us in the State the crippled Cadets almost turned the tide. Without Berg or Martin and playing two subs the cadets carried the fight to the downstate boys, but baskets by Sweeny and Mullen and two free throws by Dennis put the game on ice. 46:61 Slfancfdfqd Vursily Squad Name Pos. Every afternoon during the fall and spring of the school year the crew can be seen stroking faithfully up and down the Fox River, directly east of the campus. The crew, because of it's recent establishment at Marmion, has as yet no regular schedule of races. However this year they competed in two eight-man shell races, one with St. Iohn's Nlilitary Academy of Delafield, Wisconsin, and one with the Aurora Boat Club. It has always been the aim of every member of the 'AC:1det staff to publish news of interest to all in school, to keep the Alumni informed on the happenings of their Alma Mater, and lastly, to foster an active school spirit among the students. The regular meetings of the Cadet staff were held after school and afforded wonderful outlets for the literary proclivities of the members. Although covering the different activities for publicity purposes and then writing the copy', required a great deal of extra work and a sacrifice of much leisure time, the staff members of the school paper may feel sure that the entire cadet corps appreciates their efforts in striving to foster an active school spirit among the students of Marmion through the school paper. All the other activities, though they may take more time and result in more glory, are subordinate to that work. Sometimes we are inclined to forget the existence of this organization, for it gets little publicity, never asks for any help, and in general, does little to attract attention. Nevertheless, we must not fail to appreciate the work the sacristans do. They keep the chapel in order, prepare the altar for Mass every morning, and rise to serve in the wee small hours in the morning. They are serving God in a more direct way than is possible for most of us. At that instant we vowed that we'd make an emblem, too. lt was the wish of every freshman and always will be. As time went on, we found out how difficult it is to earn a major UM . It was then that we learned to respect the elder men wearing an emblem. The officers of this year's Lettermans Club were elected by the members. Jack Sensor, a two year letter man in football, track and basketball was elected President, Phil Barry, Vice-President, Gene Duffy, Secretary and Treasurer. Although no activities were planned or carried out by the groups this year, the students always realized their presence. In years to come we hope that the letter winners of 40 will always cherish the awards and be proud to possess an emblem which signifies leadership in all fields of athletic endeavor. So, we salute the M winners of all time for carrying on the tradition of Marmion Military Academy in the sporting world. 1 -5,-1.53, 1-'T' 'rf'-V' . 4 . g f . M-. ,,,,.
