The city of Marlow was named after the Marlow Brothers who were supposed to be outlaws. The Marlow Brothers were Charlie, Epp fsometimes knovm as Abbj , Boone George, and Alf. The late Dr. Dolph Montgomery in an article ap- pearing in the Marlow Review of December 4, 1919, states that the Marlows came to the Indian Territory about 1866, but the date when they came to Marlow is indefinite . They lived in a half dugout in the north part of Marlow, which was located in a grove of oak trees and was for a long time known as the Marlow Grove. Dr. Montgomery states that this dugout was lo- cated about six blocks north of Main Street just on the east side of the Rock Island Railroad. Another source states that the dugout was located on the east side of Wildhorse Creek about one block north of the Park. The Chisholm Trail ran near this location. In 1880, they sold their holdings to Bill Wade, who came up from Bellevue, Texas. After leaving Marlow, the Brothers went to Graham, Texas, but it seems that Boone spent most of his time in the Indian Territory after that. He was accused of crime, and in attempt- ing his arrest Boone shot Sheriff Wallace of Young County Texas, but the sheriff recovered. Boone came back to Indian Territory and was hiding on Hell Creek southwest of Marlow. Three of his supposed friends were looking after him. A large reward was offered, and these supposed friends claimed that he died, and they took him back to Graham in a wagon. They were arrested for the murder of Boone . These parties who took Boone back to Graham still have relatives in this vicinity, and perhaps it would be inappropriate to give their names . The other Marlow Brothers were arrested for at- tempting to kill Sheriff Wallace. Sheriff Wallace ex- onerated all of them except Boone. However, the Brothers had many enemies and when the officers were taking them from Graham to Weatherford, claiming that there was danger of mob violence at Graham, a mob attacked. The brothers were shackled together two and two. Two of the Marlow Brothers were killed immediately, and the two that were not killed were shackled to their dead brothers. Those still living 1 grabbed the gtms of the officers and repulsed the mob, killing several of- the mob. They were Compelledto . s , . , . A . I . - V iv il N. . .. Y.. .,,.' 1 . - -JC.: , X '-' U- . They fled to Colorado . Later they were tried but were found not guilty. Several of the mob who attacked were tried for con- spiracy in the United States Court. judge McCormick, in passing sentence on the mobsters, said, ' 'This is the first time in the annals of history when unarmed pris- oners shackled together ever repelled a mob. Such cool courage that preferred to fight against such great odds and die, if at all, in glorious battle rather than die ignominously by a franzied mob, deserves to be commemorated in song and history. ' ' This case was appealed to the Supreme Court of the United States, and Solicitor General Taft, later Presi- dent of the United States, presented the case on behalf of the government. The two Marlow Brothers who were not killed later went back to Colorado and have not been heard from since. The writer has prepared a more extensive article on this subject which will be given to the Marlow High School, and which will be available to those who de- sire to pLu'sue the matter further. The School also will be furnished a copy of the Article by Dr. Dolph Mont- gomery which appeared in the Marlow Review. The information here given was obtained from Dr. Montgomery's article, from Charley Wade of Ca- manche. jim Keith of Addington, I.em'Tittle of Man- gum, and Bill Baker of Ringling. K It appears that the Marlow Brothers were extremely rough characters, but I am informed that many people in Young County, Texas, did not consider them to be outlaws. judge J. G. The girls helped to further the feeling of school pride and fidelity at many spirit activities. The Rustlers strived to give the Outlaw teams sup- port and encouragement. Participation in pep as- semblies and at games was a major part of their ac- tivities. The Rustlers assisted the cheerleaders by carrying spirit signs and performing skits. Spirit balloons sold at home football games by the Rus- tlers helped to add color and excitement to the pre- game activities. The Rustlers were also very active during the construction of Pete's Dragon, the friendly green dragon that escorted the homecoming queens onto the football field. The girls participated with other spirit organizations in the formation of the light house on the football field. The Rustlers major money-making activity, the pre-Chrishnas fruit sale , did exceedingly well this year. Many long hows were put into this project. Green, Eugene Boyles, Terry jones, Earl Robbins, Melvin Kiser and Gary Newberry. Mr. Dean Karns - Activities Director, Transporta- tion Director, Assistant High School Principal., and Track Coach. There are many, many talented people in the world. There are many talented students at Marlow High School. However, having talent will not guide one to success because having talent, in itself, is nothing if you do not expand and nourish it. There are many of those who possess talent who simply refuse to use it. They go through their lives actually only half living, and most likely, as they grow older, they begin to question their discontent- ment and are frustrated. If one's talent is left dormant, it will eventually completely die, and when one's talent dies, a large part of that person also dies. No matter which field you enter, success will come only when you can truly say that you have given completely of yomself and of whatever talent you possess, and that you have done your very best. JIM HUPP Principal, Senior High School Master of Education, East Central State College lt has often been said that our country is either in a depression, war, or some major conflictg and if we aren't, we will make a major conflict, and if we aren't, we will make a major crisis of our own. This seems to be the present-day situation. I be- lieve it is a historical fact that most countriesare stronger after a crisis. This, l believe, will be the situation in our great country after some of the in- temal problems are solved. Those individuals who prepare themselves and have a goal in mind are going to be on top in the futm-e. Many students have an attitude it doesn't matter what kind of an education l get, there aren't many job opportunities. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The capable, well educated person will have greater opportunity than ever before in the history of om' country. The challenge I put before each of you is to take advantage of the opportunities offered at Marlow Schools and be prepared for the opportunities when they come your way. In conclusion let me say thanks to the annual staff for asking me to write a few words in your annual . They were led by All-state Quarterback Bobby Shannon and an outstanding group of seniors. The Outlaws were powered by an outstanding defence anchored by big David Lancaster and Dennis Amos and the quickness of Jamie Latimer along with Don McCur1ey and Kraig Bickerstaff as linebackers. The ends were covered by Kris Boles and john Briggs with a ball hawking secondary jerry Wakefield, Crai Dunn Steve True Te Wakefield and Bob- 8 a 1 WY by Shannon. The Outlaw offense was a balance between power and fitness and a good passing attack led by Bobby Shannon, Steve True, and joe Dial. The running attack was led by jerry Wakefield, Roger Seymour, Scott Hall, and Terry Wakefield. The strength of the offense was up front with Greg Tucker, and Bill Littrell as tackles, Rusty Maddox, Kraig Bicker- staff, and David Lancaster in the middle . This combination of size, speed and talent gave the Out- laws an outstanding offensive unit. In the State Playoffs the Outlaws defeated a good Harrah team 14-7 and lost to Clinton in the second game in a very hard fought contest 13-7, which gave the Out- laws their best season since 1964. 2 - A3 District Player of the year-Bobby Shannon Defensive player of the year-jamie Latimer ALL DISTRICT Roger Seymour - FB Steve True - TE Rusty Maddox - G Jamie Latimer -NG David Lancaster - T Greg Tucker - T jerry Wakefield - HB Kraig Bickerstaff - LB Don McCurley - LB Kris Boles - DE Bobby Sannon - QB All Area Team Jerry Wakefield - HB Rusty Maddox - G jamie Latimer - NG Bobby Shannon - QB Steve True - E All State Team Bobby Shannon-QB Outlaws Played Great In 78 Rv! 29 s 5 gr e xx. f h?A ' 5 'L i ' I 1 he ,gkci 1 . Let the dry heart fill its cup, Like a poppy looking upg Let life lightly wear her crown, Like a poppy looking dovsm, When its heart is filled with dew, And its life begins anew. Teach me, Father, how to be Kind and patient as a tree . Joyfully the crickets croon Under shady 'oak at noong Beetle , on his mission bent, Tarries in that cooling tent. Students re- member her as one who truly gave herself for others. Compassionate , respectful, Lmselfish, caring, concerned, aptly described Mrs. Wham as she went about her daily routine at M.H.S . Her courage and determination expressed itself day by day and year by year and set a pattern for us to follow. Marlow High School is a better place because Mrs. Wham passed this way. ' We're So Glad You Came Our Way Helen Muncrief 19 years Mrs. Muncrief has served as an inspi- ration to students and faculty alike at MHS. Her standards of excellence have benefited all. Her inexhaustible knowl- edge of materials and subjects has made the library a model facility, one which others might emulate . Her keen aware- ness of students and their needs has been invaluable in their quest for learning. Earnest Muncrief 35 years Thank you Mr. Muncrief for 35 years of service to the youth of Marlow l-Iigh School. You have been an inspiration and prime example for generations of young men to follow. You are unique in motivat- ing young men and, in recent years young women, to reach the level of excellence of which they are capable . As all good things must come to and end, so it is with your years as a teacher of Vo- cational Agriculture at Marlow High School. We will miss you, but we will al- ways remember your devotion, loyalty, and love for your students, friends, and colleagues. God Bless You Mr. Muncrief .
