Qjg, Published by the Yearbook Staff Marlow Senior High School Marlow, Oklahoma Volume XXV Our J-fsritage The Marlow Outlaws have an appropriate name. The city of Marlow was named after the Marlow Brothers who were supposed to be outlaws. The Marlow Brothers were Charlie, Epp fsometimes known as Abby, Boone George, and Alf. The late Dr. Dolph Montgomery in an article appearing in the Marlow Review of December 4, 1919, states that the Mar- lows came to the Indian Territory about 1866, but the date when they came to Marlow is indefinite. They lived in a half dugout in the north part of Marlow, which was located in a grove of oak trees and was for a long time known as the Marlow Grove. Dr. Montgomery states that this dugout was located a- bout six blocks north of Main Street just on the east side of the Rock Island Railroad Another source states that the dugout was located north of the Park The Chlsholm Trail ran near this locatlon In 1880, they sold their holdings to Bill Wade, who came up from Bellevue, Texas After leaving Marlow, the Brothers went to Graham, Texas, but lt seems that Boone spent most of his time 1n the Indian Territory after that He was accused of crime, and 1n attempting his arrest Boone shot Sheriff Wallace of Young County Texas, but the sheriff recovered Boone came back to Indian Territory and was h1d1ng on Hell Creek south west of Marlow Three of his supposed frlends were looking af ter him A large reward was offered, and these supposed friends claimed that he died, and they took hlm back to Graham in a wagon They were arrested for the murder of Boone These parties who took Boone back to Graham still have relatives in this v1c1n1ty, and perhaps it would be lnappropriate to give the1r names The other Marlow Brothers were arrested for attempting to kill Sherlff Wallace Sheriff Wallace exonerated all of them except Boone However, the Brothers had many enemies and when the officers were taking them from Graham to Weather ford, claiming that there was danger of mob v1olence at Gra ham, a mob attacked The Brothers were shackled together two and two Two of the Marlow Brothers were killed lmmed lately, and two that were not killed were shackled to their dead Brothers Those still living grabbed the guns of the officers and repulsed the mob kllllng several of the mob They were compelled to cut off the ankles of their dead brothers 1n order to free themselves They fled to Colorado Later they were 11'1ed but were found not guilty Several of the mob who attacked were tried for consplr acy 1n the United States Court judge McCormick, 1n passin sentence on the mobsters, said, Th1s 1S the first time in the annals of hlstory when unarmed prisoners shackled together ever repelled a mob Such cool courage that preferred to fight against such great odds and die, if at all 1n glorlous battle rather than die ignominously by a frenzied mob, d serves to be commenorated 1n song and history Thls case was appealed to the Supreme Court of the United States, and Solicitor General Taft, later presldent of the United States, presented the case on behalf of the government The two Marlow Brothers who were not killed later Went back to Colorado and have not been heard from slnce The writer has prepared a more extensive article on this subject wh1ch will be glven to the Marlow High School, and whlch will be avallable to those who desire to pursue the mat ter further The School also will be furnished a copy of the article by Dr Dolph Montgomery which appeared in the Mar low Review The information here given was obtained from Dr Mont gomery's Article, from Charley Wade of Comanche, 11m Keith of Add1ngton, Lem Tlttle of Mangum Oklahoma, and B111 Baker of R1ngl1ng It appears that the Marlow Brothers were extremely rough characters, but I am informed that many people in Young County, Texas, did not consider them to be outlaws Judge I G Cl1ft Duncan, Oklahoma ii --+ bv an-I 60lflf6'lflf6' Happy Days at .MHS flag, Cfrach flotsy- Zotsy J-lot Shats U15 Klub Seniors - Made in the Shade Juniors - Sit On It Sophomores - Nerds Freshmen - Mouthy Malph Editor, Ricky Brown Assitant Editor, Steve Bolton Adviser, Amy Millwee Photography Adviser, Don Bortell TW ., ' U16 Pad .75 gawk Qricndship ls' Sasyf The newest Outlaw cheerleader. It is the 25th edition for Mrs. Millwee as adviser. Times have changed, students come and go, and even the buildings are different, but the honor and ideals of MHS remain high. The 1976-77 year has proven to be an outstanding year for the Marlow Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. We had 3 finalists in the State Farmers Union Speech Contest where Kelly Bickerstaff and Mike Dau- benspeck were awarded an expense-paid trip to the Eastern States this july. Our total supervised Agricul- tural Occupations Experience Program consists of an inventory of 550, 350, and our gross income came to a total of 594, 605. Our total profit was S55, 194. We have received many honors this year and worked hard for everyone of them, but we are now looking forward to the upcoming year and winning many more honors. University I want to express my very real plea- sure and honor for the opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Marlow Schools. I shall do my best to continue improvement of the educational oppor- tunities available to the youth of the Marlow Community. Marlow is a beautiful place to live. Often people from other areas remark that our city is an attractive, clean- loolcing community. This is true, but the real strength of this community is the attitude of its citizens. They have always emphasized the importance of good schools, but more importantly, have faithfully supported them. Marlow will continue to have quality schools as long as the citizens support and show a concern for better education for our youth. .3 This yearbook tells the story of the , ., fine Marlow Schools. J. .. o'Q,,i-f Scott Ousley, Supt., Marlow Schools Master of Science, University of Oklahoma One of the most important elements of a good school is having a competent staff. At Marlow High School the staff is a cooperating group whose mem- bers have common purposes and are motivated by common ideals. Each staff member has a broad gen- eral education and has extensive preparation in his specialty. The educational requirements for teachers at MHS and the curriculum offerings far exceed the state requirements. This has enabled Marlow High School to be a member of the North Central Ac- crediting Associaiion since 1928. The curriculum at Marlow High School includes those activities, both formal and informal, carried on in relation to planned courses of study. It func- tions through learning experiences and instructional materials from various fields of knowledge. At- tempts are made to provide learning experiences that meet not only the general needs but also the specialized needs related to the unique abilities, interests, and expectations of each individual. The instructional activities are planned to develop know- ledge, understanding, attitudes, ideals, habits, and sldlls that are appropriate to a full life in American society. The classroom instructional program is the dom- inant means of attaining a school's objectives. The student activities program at Marlow High School is the major means of fulfilling those objectives that are not adequately served by regular classroom in- struction. Experiences in the student activities pro- gram are designed to help meet the leisure, re- jim Hupp, Principal, Senior High School, Master of Bduca- creational, social, and emotional interests and tion, East Central State College needs of all students. In all activities, the develop- ment of democratic leadership and cooperative attitudes is a major objective. 49 ANN VANDERSLICE- Secretary business Office, BARBARA TAYLOR- Secre- tary to Supt. The 1976 football squad was a true copy from the pages of the past as they exhibited all the character- istics of the great outlaw football teams. Even though they were smallish in size they were very large in heart. The 1976 Outlaws carved an out- standing 8-2 regular season record and a berth in the State Playoffs. This team will long be remem- bered for its SUPER GOALINE STANDS and for the character each member showed he had when the team's back was to the wall.
