' The Oklahoma plains have been here since the beginning, the great expanses of prairie that have become trademark of the land, and of the people. Q The plains have been a home to many things. jThe great herds of buffalo rented the plains twice a year their annual migration to northem plains in the summer and southem plains in the winter. j With the buffalo came Oklahoma's first citizens, the Indians. jFollowing the buffalo herds was their only occ pation for they depended on the shaggy beasts not only for their food, but for clothing and shelter also. Q All things pass with time, and so it was with the buffalo and the red men. Gradually the plains saw the buffa disappear and with him he Indian, and a new breed develop. Q The plains now ga e a home to the great cattle herds and their masters, the Southwestern cattlemen. ffhey sz the cattle industry risx and grow, -and they watched the greatrtrail herds being driven from Oklahoma and Texas the markets at Abilene. and Wichita. jThey watched the restless pioneer, always moving west, T and forthe first tin knew the feelings of marked trails as the first settlers drove stakes into the soil to make the road for those to com Then, even as the' buffalo and Indians faded away, so came the time when the cattlemen must give way - to t farmers who tilled the fertile, virgin soil and fenced the plains to raise their crops. j Now another great industry is coming to the plains, steel towers are being built by steel men sinking tubes f into the heart of the plains searching for the valuable black gold - oil. Q Where the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet .... Although Oklahoma is expanding and gaining new industries every day, farming is still the major industry. jFrr the cotton belt in the south to the wheat belt along the Kansas border, Oklahoma is primarily an agricultural sta Field after field of snowy cotton. fades into acres of golden grain waving in the ever present breeze. Q And the wind comes right behind the rain .... ' Regretfully, -rain is something we never seem to get quite enough of in Oklahoma. jAlways, though, there are few good showers every year. jWhen they coine, they bring with them the miracle of rebirth, carpeting the hills an plains with a rich greens Oklahoma is a wonderful place to be after a shower. fI'he air is so fresh and clean that gives one a lift just to breathe it, and the sun is bright and clear. j , Oklahoma, every night my honey lamb and I, sit alone and talk and watch a hawk makin' lazy circles in tl Sky- . - Oklahoma is fast growing and the population is becoming centralized, but still on a warm summer evening c can find a quiet, cool spot and watch that part which will never change. The hawk has been here since time. fW. the plains he has watched the country change, and with the plains he will continue, the lonely sentinel of the s and land. f As Oklahoma is a young land, so are its people young. Oklahoma is a place for dreams of the future, dreams be built and realized. jYoung people with new ideas are building Oklahoma every day, and with it, they build d nation. ' Weiknow we belong to the land, and the land we belong to is grand . . , , Yes, -we belong to our state and we are proud of our state, its ideals and accomplishments. Our pride is bc in us and no matter where we may go, -it is always there. Qklahomans who have moved and whom one meets outsi the state have only fond memories and pleasant dreams of returning' someday to Oklahoma - home. Q Oklahoma is a land of the future. jln only sixty-eight years Oklahoma has changed from a raw frontier il opened to the white settler for the first time to a modern, progressive state which can boast of new industries, int ests and communities - from a sod house on the prairie to beautiful modern homes with every imaginable conve ience - from the horse, -stagecoach, land wagon to modern cars, streamlined trains, -and jet planes - from farmi with a team of mules to the latest mechanized implements - from yesterday to today. Q And when we say, Yip-I-yippy-o-de-aye! , , , , V That can only mean one thing. jlt's football season and Big Red is on the march again. Oklahoma has me things to be proud of from rich resources to thriving industry, -but perhaps the best known is Oklahoma Univers and the Big Red team. jFor three consecutive years Oklahoma University has shown the spirit and fight tl makes for a winning team. j We're only sayin' 'You're doin' fine, Oklahomag Oklahoma, O.
