Look at that crowd! Listen to all that noise! Boy, this is really going to be tough. Hey, make it snappy with those water buckets ! Uh-oh, that ' s us! Gotta be careful--can ' t spill a drop--everybody ' s looking --we have to make a good showing today. Hmn --looks like there ' s no more room on the bench; just the big-shot water boys get to sit there. Yep--over there ' s Ronnie Moses, chief bucket carrier and his first lieutenant, Kenneth Hamrick. Taking notes is Nancy Pennybacker and sitting beside her with an open purse is Nancy Ward Currence, waiting for the quarter back. Is that Roger Pryor running down the field, trying to get an interview with Marlinton ' s star halfback? Watch it Roger, he ' s running for a touchdown! Well, anyhow, three people are cheering for us; Charlotte Nottingham, Marilyn Ryder, and Sybil Davis. After all, there isn ' t anything to be so scared of ' cause Mr. White and Mrs. Collins are here to see that we don ' t kick the bucket . Here we are--back again--another game. Have a pretty good crowd; the other team doesn ' t look so tough; this should be a cinch. And don ' t we have marvelous seats! There ' re some pretty important people sitting on the bench with us this year. Seat No. 1 is held by Ronnie Moses and assisting him in keeping it (the bench, that is) warm is none other than Fred Burns. Nancy Pennybacker is still taking notes as fast as Marilyn Ryder can report ' em. We have a little money this year and Roger Pryor is sitting there with his shoes off trying to count it (the money, that is). The seats must be a little too hot for Charlotte Nottingham, Sybil Davis, and Fred Burns, ' cause they sure are yelling for something. By the way, what about those compliments we had on those marvelous assembly programs we gave- -remember The King ' s English , Punch Brothers , and The Old School House . ' Course, I guess we couldn’t have got along without AliceMooreand Claude Miller. They really helped keep us on the ball (football, that is). Whoopee! This time we should really have fun. Probably get to play some : might even get a letter. After all, the second team isn ' t so bad. We put some girls to work this year, and Mrs. Coyner and Miss Shiffler are keeping us on our toes. Leading the calisthenics is Nancy Ward Currence, and helping her out is Sybil Davis. Nancy Pennybacker must be a little mixed up-- she ' s still taking notes. Jarve Currence has counted our money (what money we have) three times and got three different totals. Charlotte Nottingham, Sybil Davis, and Sue Rexrode surely must like to exercise; they ' re going twice as fast as anyone else. Reporting on the plays is Pat Curtis, and speaking of plays--that Mr. Coed was really the most ! And to think we had to feed those Senior Wheels (fifth wheels, that is) to get rid of them--food was good anyhow. We spent all our money, but the year ended up mighty rose-y with the Junior-Senior Prom. Oh!!!! that Second Team. Well-we finally made it--heroes at last. Sure, kid. I’ll give you my autograph. Feels pretty good to be treated with some respect after four long years of drudgery. Aren ' t our coaches something. Yea! Yea! Helen Smith! Rah! Rah! McElwee! Calling signals for our team is Nancy Ward Currence and seeing that the plays are properly executed (not hung up) is Fred Burns. Is Nancy Pennybacker still taking notes? Here comes Sue Rexrode with her little green box. She ' s our penny-pincher this year. Directing our many fans in cheering are Charlotte Notting¬ ham, Sybil Davis, and Sue Rexrode (money doesn ' t weigh her down). Besides being marvelous, stupendous, (that doesn ' t mean stupid , water boys) colossal ballplayers, we also excel in drama. The Able Miss Cain — Lesser than Ma cb eth , and greater! All Hail!! Even the intellectual need a bit of recreation and we sure wrecked-creation with out Ranch Party. They even had to build a new gym floor after we got through! So ends the Chronicle of the Heroes of ' 54. REPORTING OUR NEWS—The editor sits on a stool, reading copy; the news editor pecks away at the typewriter; the sports editor scribbles down late scores; other staff members scratch their heads over headline counts. The COPPERHEAD is almost ready to go to press . . . .Hold everything--the snooper contributes a gem. The staff folds and distributes the papers. Everyone sighs with relief--another deadline met. Publishing Our Record. The MARLINTONIAN is our annual--an experience, a headache, a triumph! Writing copy--fitting copy to space--cropping pictures--identifying pictures--retaking pictures--and, finally--just pictures! Doing a little bit here and a little bit there, the parts began to fit. The MARLINTONIAN began to have a personality. The dummy began to breathe and the staff to feel the thrill of creation. DEADLINE ! 1 ! “We never dreamed it was so much work-and fun HUH?
