S. in the fall of 1949 “we didn’t have much book- larnin but we were all willin’ to try. Our two head guides were Mr. John White and Miss Mary Moore. After selecting as chief scouts: Kenneth Ervine, President; Earl Christian, Vice-President; Russell Nottingham, Secretary; Jean Clutter, Treasurer; Pat McNeill, Reporter and to keep us cheering through the long year of toil, we decided on Jack Bear’s big feet (enough to keep anyone laughing for any number of years) and Vera Ann Vallandingham ' s charm. After passing the first obstacle along the way, the semester exams, we had smooth sailing for awhile. Then before we pitched our tents for the summer vacation, we all gathered to watch the very happy seniors git their sheepskins and git! Treking along our second trial, we hailed big scout Mr. Yeager, seeking the regulations and red tape on how to set our traps to catch the most knowledge for coming year. This year new scouts were selected. We were fortunate enuff to capture from one of the more educated settlements for our sponsors, Mrs. Alice Moore, and Mr. Claude Miller. Head guides were as follows: Kenneth Ervine, President; Bubbles Moore, Vice-President; Jane Ruckman, Secretary; Jean Clutter, Treasurer; Earl Christian, Reporter. Noise makers (to ward off the Indians) were the same as the year before phis Jane Ruckman. That year we were all real happy on-account- of beatin’ the stuffin’s out of our enemies and gettin’ knocked for a loop once in a w hile ourselves. We also initiated the poor Freshmen to get revenge for what that happened to us. By this time we was all plumb wore out so we left for the smallish vacation allowed us. Us hill people had a little uprising (the class tournments and we won.) Nuff said. Came fall again and we borrowed a canoe and paddled down the Greenbrier to the little settlement of Marlinton. Sompin’ new was going on this year. Fur the first time in a minny a long year a real Junior class wuz added; We gave our governship to Mrs. Priscilla Collins and Miss Madge Shiffler. They wuz plumb good. With them wuz Kenneth Ervine, President; Don Bowers, Vice- President; Jane Ruckman, Secretary; Jim Curry, Treasurer; Earl Christian, Reporter. Didn’t peer like we could ever git around to changin’ cheerleaders so we jest kept the same ones we had. When the annual uprising (tournement) came around, we won it again, naturally. At the end of the year we had to git all our pennies in one heap and gave the seniors a big feast. Coursp we got some too, not bad if we did pay for it. O boy! Jest one more year and did we look forward to that. We took a short breather at this time so we could make a comeback and be ready for the final trek up the hill. Knowledge. What a come-back we made that year! Why, I remember plain as could be we got Mr. Charles McElwee and Miss Helen Smith to sort of observe our workings. As progress slowed we dickered Mrs. Rosemary Coyner to help us on the final climb. Having grown to a real working community we got our gov¬ ernment set up with Kenneth Ervine as President; Don Bowers as Vice-Presi¬ dent; Pat McNeill as Secretary; Jim Curry as Treasurer, and Jane Rexrode as Reporter and our noise makers were the same old faithfuls, Jane Ruckman, Jack Bear, and Vera Ann Vallandingham. Then Christmas set in so we looked for¬ ward to pulling Santa Claus’s whiskers and we had a little fun called the Jingle Bell Hop. We si re had some mighty fine fiddlin’. From there on in the only thing that slowed us down was semester tests. Now once on the summit, we are prepared to try our various skills in bigger and wider hollows. ■plgt r 1 f I wr I WEb W Hs 34j|i J 1 4 1 - V Kf Kill k ’i DAVID MASON HARPER NELS LONNIE RATLI BUDDY RICE JENNY RICHAf ' LYN E.
